Display comments as (Linear | Threaded)I love these ideas. Just ordered 3 of the USB power outlets you mentioned.
And, hey, a network outlet in the bathroom is just forward-looking. I did a "BIOS-upgrade" a few weeks ago to our washing machine (reduced water consumption and some minor bugfixes ), and this machine had some RJ45 connectors on the control board. I'm sure one of these can be used as a Ethernet connector in the future, and your washing machine will twitter/mail.... if its finished...
A few years ago i worked a a company making a control system running on solaris. As long as your house does not beat the Vattelfall Hamburg network in complexity, this may be a nice gimmick for your house too.
There is some license cost attached, but may be you can trade in some oracle licenses.
I once made an IPMP training for a company making light control systems ... but i don't have that large requirements ....
Why are you using USB wall outlets? Wouldn't it be more interesting (challenging) to use regular Ethernet outlets and provide them USB-power using PoE? Your article just made me think of this, because I have two CAT-7 outlets adjacent to my electric cooker, which I have no use for, so far. Using them as a power source, in order to charge my iPhone, with some sort of adapter from RJ-45 to USB and the PoE power injector located nearby the switch, would be nice, though.
