Cain's smoking ad divides Republicans: Reuters/Ipsos poll (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Presidential hopeful Herman Cain's quirky "smoking ad" may have mystified many Americans, but according to a new Reuters/Ipsos online poll, it has drawn a sharp line between Republicans who identify with the Tea Party and those who don't.

The ad, which shows Cain's chief of staff Mark Block puffing on a cigarette for no apparent reason, created enormous Internet buzz this week.

Six in 10 of those who strongly identify with the conservative Tea Party movement said they loved or liked the ad.

An almost equal percentage of people who self-identified as mainstream Republicans either disliked or hated it.

Block is shown on the video giving Cain, a surprise Republican nomination front-runner, a testimonial before taking a draw from a cigarette. The image shifts to the candidate who slowly breaks into a smile as his campaign song blares.

"He's a likable candidate, particularly for those strong Tea Partiers who identify around values of small government and an anti-Washington sentiment. Cain seems to be tapping into that very effectively," said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.

Tea Party supporters form a central part of the Republican voting base and could help determine who the party's 2012 presidential nominee will be, with voting to start in early January.

"STUPID"

Cain, the former chief executive of Godfather's Pizza, has shot to the top of some Republican polls in recent weeks in the race to decide who will challenge Democratic President Barack Obama in next year's election.

About a third of people surveyed loved or liked Cain's video, a third hated or disliked it, and another third was neutral.

Some commentators have speculated that Cain's campaign put a smoker in the ad as an anti-political correctness message that would appeal to conservatives.

Even if that were the intention, most Tea Party Republicans did not take the bait.

"I do think the Tea Party support for this ad is not because of the smoking but because of their support for Cain," said Clark.

The smoking did stick in viewers' minds, and seemed to obscure the campaign message of Cain as a viable candidate.

The one word that came to people's minds most when asked about the smoking segment was "stupid."

Fifty percent of those polled felt what stood out for them most was the narrator smoking a cigarette, and more than a quarter thought the ad communicated to them that Cain endorses smoking.

"This really distracted from the message in a lot of ways," said Clark.

People who have never been smokers noticed the cigarette more than those who smoke or who have smoked. About one in five of current smokers felt that it communicated that 'Herman Cain endorses smoking,' but this figure rose to a third among people who have never smoked.

"If you've never smoked a cigarette you're more likely to think Cain endorses smoking," said Clark.

The poll surveyed 554 registered Republicans, of whom 374 answered questions about the video.

Because it was an online poll, typical margins of error do not apply. Despite that, various recognized methods were used to select as representative a sample as possible and weigh the results. If this were a traditional random survey, it would have a margin of error of between plus 4.4 percent and plus 5.1 percent. This figure varies because some participants dropped out of the video portion of the survey.

PFT: Eagles' Young sued for trying to make it rain

Chicago Bears v Tampa Bay BuccaneersGetty Images

We?re checking in with teams as they hit their bye week. ?Or at least we are trying to.

Next up: The Chicago Bears.

Familiar position

Lovie Smith told everyone to calm down after the team?s loss to the Lions on Monday Night Football in Week 5. ?He pointed out that if the team could beat the Vikings and Bucs, they would be 4-3 just like last year at the bye.

Give Smith credit: That?s exactly what happened. ?After a?tumultuous?training camp and start to the season, the Bears are in decent enough shape.

The Bears season has a different feel to it after two strong efforts. They completely destroyed Minnesota, and controlled the action against the Bucs in London.

The Bears have proven capable of beating mediocre competition. They can?t beat the best NFC teams: The Packers, Saints, and Lions all have wins over Chicago.

Forte leads the way

Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the NFL. ?Matt Forte may be the most important to his team. ?Forte leads all players by a wide margin in yards from scrimmage with 1,091. ?He is just off Chris Johnson?s all time yards from scrimmage record pace.

It?s hard to overstate how good Forte is as a receiver. He has a shot to be the first running back since Marshall Faulk to put up over 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. It?s no coincidence Mike Martz was involved in both seasons.

Improving passing game

Jay Cutler may have enjoyed the best two game stretch of his Bears career in the loss to the Lions and the win over the Vikings. He is looking more comfortable. His pass protection has improved from absymal to simply lame.

The offense still has to be more consistent after some early ugly outings, but it?s headed in the right direction. It?s 12th in scoring despite the 21 sacks Cutler has taken. The team has a +4 turover margin.

Safety dance

Chris Harris started the season at strong safety; he was released Thursday. Brandon Meriweather was signed for $3.25 million and now sits on the bench. The team is going young with Major Wright and Chris Conte at the position. ?This is a shaky secondary overall.

Average defense

Lovie Smith teams are supposed to be built on defense. At this stage, the Bears have been ordinary stopping opponents. Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher are still playing at a high level, but they don?t get a lot of help. The defensive line has been decent. Julius Peppers has played at less than 100%.

Chicago?s only chance to make a postseason push is for the defense to improve dramatically.

Angling for a wild card

The Bears are three games back in the NFC North, so their only hope for a playoff spot is a wild card. They are in decent shape with wins over NFC contenders like Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

The next two weeks after the bye are huge. ?The Bears travel to Philadelphia before hosting Detroit. Sweeping those two games would put Chicago in terrific position before an oddly timed four-game tour through the AFC West.

After seven weeks, the Bears are in the mix. Their recent play indicates we?ll probably be talking about Bears tiebreakers come late December.

Quantum computer components 'coalesce' to 'converse'

If quantum computers are ever to be realized, they likely will be made of different types of parts that will need to share information with one another, just like the memory and logic circuits in today's computers do. However, prospects for achieving this kind of communication seemed distantuntil now. A team of physicists working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has shown* for the first time how these parts might communicate effectively.

The goal to develop quantum computersa long-awaited type of computer that could solve otherwise intractable problems, such as breaking complex encryption codeshas inspired scientists the world over to invent new devices that could become the brains and memory of these machines. Many of these tiny devices use particles of light, or photons, to carry the bits of information that a quantum computer will use.

But while each of these pieces of hardware can do some jobs well, none are likely to accomplish all of the functions necessary to build a quantum computer. This implies that several different types of quantum devices will need to work together for the computer or network to function. The trouble is that these tiny devices frequently create photons of such different character that they cannot transfer the quantum bits of information between one another. Transmuting two vastly different photons into two similar ones would be a first step toward permitting quantum information components to communicate with one another over large distances, but until now this goal has remained elusive.

However, the team has demonstrated that it is possible to take photons from two disparate sources and render these particles partially indistinguishable. That photons can be made to "coalesce" and become indistinguishable without losing their essential quantum properties suggests in principle that they can connect various types of hardware devices into a single quantum information network. The team's achievement also demonstrates for the first time that a "hybrid" quantum computer might be assembled from different hardware types.

The team connected single photons from a "quantum dot," which could be useful in logic circuits, with a second single-photon source that uses "parametric down conversion," which might be used to connect different parts of the computer. These two sources typically produce photons that differ so dramatically in spectrum that they would be unusable in a quantum network. But with a deft choice of filters and other devices that alter the photons' spectral shapes and other properties, the team was able to make the photons virtually identical.

"We manipulate the photons to be as indistinguishable as possible in terms of spectra, location and polarizationthe details you need to describe a photon. We attribute the remaining distinguishability to properties of the quantum dot," says Glenn Solomon, of NIST's Quantum Measurement Division. "No conceivable measurement can tell indistinguishable photons apart. The results prove in principle that a hybrid quantum network is possible and can be scaled up for use in a quantum network."

NASA sting terrifies elderly woman

NASA sting: At the end of the sting operation, agents were left holding a speck of lunar dust smaller than a grain of rice and a 73-year-old suspect who was terrified by armed officials.

The elaborate mission to recover a moon rock led NASA agents to one of the most down-to-earth places: a family restaurant in southern California.

But at the end of the sting operation, agents were left holding a speck of lunar dust smaller than a grain of rice and a 73-year-old suspect who was terrified by armed officials.

Five months after NASA investigators and local agents swooped into the restaurant and hailed their operation as a cautionary tale for anyone trying to sell national treasure, no charges have been filed, NASA isn't talking and the case appears stalled.

The target, Joann Davis, a grandmother who says she was trying to raise money for her sick son, asserts the lunar material was rightfully hers, having been given to her space-engineer husband by Neil Armstrong in the 1970s.

"It's a very upsetting thing," Davis, now 74, told The Associated Press. "It's very detrimental, very humiliating, all of it a lie."

The strange case centers on a speck of authenticated moon rock encased in an acrylic-looking dome that appears to be a paperweight. For years, NASA has gone after anyone selling lunar material gathered on the Apollo missions because it is considered government property, so cannot be sold for profit.

Still, NASA has given hundreds of lunar samples to nations, states and high-profile individuals but only on the understanding they remain government property. NASA's inspector general works to arrest anyone trying to sell them.

The case was triggered by Davis herself, according to a search warrant affidavit written by Norman Conley, an agent for the inspector general.

She emailed a NASA contractor May 10 trying to find a buyer for the rock, as well as a nickel-sized piece of the heat shield that protected the Apollo 11 space capsule as it returned to earth from the first successful manned mission to the moon in 1969.

"I've been searching the internet for months attempting to find a buyer," Davis wrote. "If you have any thoughts as to how I can proceed with the sale of these two items, please call."

Davis told AP the items were among many of the space-related heirlooms her husband left her when he died in 1986. She said she had worked as a lexicographer and he had worked as an engineer for North American Rockwell, which contracted for NASA during the Apollo era.

Davis claims Armstrong gave the items to her husband, though the affidavit says the first man on the moon has previously told investigators he never gave or sold lunar material to anyone.

In follow-up phone conversations with a NASA agent, Davis acknowledged the rock was not sellable on the open market and fretted about an agent knocking on her door and taking the material, which she was willing to sell for "big money underground."

"She must know that this is a questionable transaction because she used the term 'black market,'" Agent Conley states in the search warrant.

Curiously, though, Davis agreed to sell the sample to NASA for a stellar $1.7 million. She said she wanted to leave her three children an inheritance and take care of her sick son.

NASA investigators then arranged the sting, where Conley met with Davis and her current husband at the Denny's restaurant at Lake Elsinore in Riverside County.

Soon after settling into a booth, Davis said, she pulled out the moon sample and about half a dozen sheriff's deputies and NASA investigators rushed into the eatery.

When officers in flak vests took a hold of her, the 4-foot-11 woman said she was so scared she lost control of her bladder and was taken outside to a parking lot, where she was questioned and detained for about two hours.

"They grabbed me and pulled me out of the booth," Davis claimed. "I had very, very deep bruises on my left side."

Conley declined to comment and NASA Office of the Inspector General spokeswoman Renee Juhans said she could not talk about an ongoing investigation.

Davis was eventually allowed home, without the moon rock, and was never booked into a police station or charged.

The affidavit states authorities believed Davis was in possession of stolen government property but so far they have not publicly revealed any proof.

"This (is) abhorrent behavior by the federal government to steal something from a retiree that was given to her," said Davis's attorney, Peter Schlueter, who is planning legal action.

Joseph Gutheinz, a University of Phoenix instructor and former NASA investigator who has spent years tracking down missing moon rocks, said prosecuting Davis could prove tricky.

Gutheinz said he recently learned that NASA did not always take good care of lunar materials. In some instances, space suits were simply hosed off and any moon dust on them lost forever.

While bigger rocks such as those given to various countries and museums were carefully inventoried and tracked, it now appears there are unknown numbers of much smaller pieces circulating in the public. Some of these may have been turned into paperweights and informally given away by NASA engineers.

"I have a real moral problem with what's happened here in California," Gutheinz said. "I've always taken the position that no one should own an Apollo-era moon rock. They belong to the people. But if we did such a poor job of safeguarding (lunar samples,) I cannot fault that person."

About 2,200 samples of lunar rocks, core samples, pebbles, sand and dust ? weighing about 840 pounds (380 kilograms) ? were brought to Earth by NASA's Apollo lunar landing missions from 1969 to 1972. A recent count showed 10 states and more than 90 countries could not account for their shares of the gray rocks.

World stocks mixed ahead of Europe plan (AP)

TOKYO ? World stock markets were mixed Tuesday as investors waited for European leaders to unveil a plan to tackle the continent's ongoing debt crisis.

European leaders have said they made progress at a weekend summit and plan to unveil comprehensive plans for containing the crisis by Wednesday.

Among measures, the 17-nation eurozone is set to shore up its bailout fund, and German lawmakers said the plan could boost the fund's lending capacity to more than euro1 trillion ($1.39 trillion).

European stocks rose modestly in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 was less than 0.1 percent higher at 5,550.49. Germany's DAX fell 0.4 percent higher at 6,033.09. France's CAC-40 slipped 0.5 percent to 3,204.59. Wall Street headed for a lower opening, with Dow Jones Industrial Futures up less than 0.1 percent to 11,819 and S&P 500 futures sliding less than 0.1 percent to 1,246.30.

Asian shares ended mostly higher after a skittish day of trading. Japan's Nikkei 225 index closed 0.9 percent lower at 8,762.31, with exporters struggling in the face of a strong yen. The dollar hovered near the 76-yen line, just above a new record low of 75.78 yen hit before the weekend.

Finance Minister Jun Azumi said Japan would take measures to slow the yen's acceleration if necessary, firing a shot at speculators who may be adding to the volatility.

The yen's sharp climb "does not reflect the real economy, and we have to believe that this is a speculative move," Azumi told reporters, according to Kyodo News agency. "If this goes further, then we will take decisive action."

His comments did little to stem selling in export-reliant sectors like high-tech and autos, which are now also struggling with lost production to the flooding in Thailand. Toyota Motor Corp. fell 1.7 percent, and Canon Inc. was down 1.8 percent.

Credit Suisse describes the eurozone as "inching forward" and that "there are as many questions as answers." But for any plan to be effective in the long term, it says, leaders must spur growth in Europe.

"At a minimum, we believe the crisis in the periphery will not end until there are current account surpluses... or clearly cheap currencies," the Credit Suisse report said. "We believe that the (European Central Bank) has to expand its balance sheet to weaken the euro and thereby create growth."

Elsewhere, South Korea's Kospi lost 0.5 percent to 1,888.65, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 1.1 percent to 18,968.20. Benchmarks in mainland China, India, Taiwan, Singapore, and New Zealand also advanced.

Thailand's SET index was 2.8 percent higher at 941.93, even though the country is being battered by its worst flood in decades. Ratings agency Moody's says it does not expect the floods ? the worst to hit Thailand in decades ? to affect its creditworthiness.

"The government will have ample fiscal space to absorb flood-related costs without prompting a permanent deterioration in its debt ratios," Moody's said in a report.

Overnight in New York, the Dow Jones industrial average finished with a gain of 104.83 points, or 0.9 percent, at 11,913.62.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose to 1,254.19, marking the highest close for the S&P 500 since Aug. 3, just as Washington was resolving a showdown over raising the country's borrowing limit.

In currencies, the dollar rose slightly to 76.12 yen from 76.07 yen late Monday in New York. The euro stood at $1.3909 from $1.3951.

Benchmark crude for December delivery was up $1.62 cents at $92.84 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $3.87, or 4.4 percent, to settle at $91.27 in New York on Monday.

Brent crude was down 2 cents at $111.43 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

Avoid Spicy Foods and Junk Foods Before Bed to Keep Nightmares Away and Get Better Rest [Sleep]

Avoid Spicy Foods and Junk Foods Before Bed to Keep Nightmares Away and Get Better RestEating right before going to sleep is thought to be one cause of nightmares, because it raises the body's metabolism and brain activity. Which foods you eat can also increase chances of a fitful night?specifically, spicy and junk foods.

Lifestyle blog Divine Caroline points out two studies that have shown eating these two types of food just before bed resulted in poorer sleep. One published in the International Journal of Psychophysiology found that the addition of Tabasco sauce and mustard at dinner markedly disturbed the six male subjects' sleep. This may be because spicy food can raise body temperatures.

Junk food?ice cream bars and candy bars?was shown in another study published in The Journal of The Mind and Body to particularly trigger more brain waves, which caused seven of the ten participants to have nightmares while sleeping. The study also found that going to bed on a full stomach can trigger those nightmare-inducing brain waves.

The take away? For a good night's sleep, pass on the hot sauce and dessert before bed. Photo remixed from an original by Creatista / Shutterstock

Berlin: The Birth Place Of The Next Facebook?

berlin-visitingTechCrunch recently featured post by TechCrunch TV featuring Jeremy Rifkin, author of The Third Industrial Revolution, who argues that Europe will be the next cradle of innovation. To that end, we're increasingly finding VCs in Europe looking for the best hubs for those innovators. And we recently argued that the axis of power was swinging behind both London and Berlin. But EarlyBird Capital was the first VC to open an office in Berlin this year and others like Accel and Index have become regular visitors. Below, Roberto Bonanzinga, partner at Balderton Capital, argues why he thinks Berlin could produce the next Facebook.

More Evidence Links Tanning Beds to Higher Skin Cancer Risk (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Oct. 24 (HealthDay News) -- Roughly 10 percent of Americans continue to use indoor tanning beds, but new research suggests that doing so increases their risk for three common skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

In conducting the study, researchers tracked the tanning bed use of more than 73,000 nurses -- first during high school and college, and then when the women were between 25 and 35 years of age.

The study found that tanning beds increased skin cancer risk over time, with a "dose-response effect." That means the more visits to the tanning salon, the higher the woman's risk for skin cancer.

Compared with women who didn't use tanning beds, the risk for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma jumped 15 percent for every four visits to an indoor tanning bed each year. The risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, also increased by 11 percent.

Exposure in youth seemed most hazardous. "Use during high school/college had a stronger effect on the increased risk for basal cell carcinoma compared with use during ages 25 to 35," noted study author Dr. Mingfeng Zhang, a research fellow in the department of dermatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston in a news release.

Numerous studies conducted over the past few years have shown strong associations between tanning bed use and skin cancer. In March of 2010, a advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended a ban on indoor tanning by minors, and last February the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a statement supporting such a ban.

The study authors agreed that the findings have public health implications for prevention of all three types of skin cancer.

"[They] can be used to warn the public against future use of tanning beds and to promote restrictions on the indoor tanning industry by policymakers," said Zhang.

The researchers said they plan to investigate the link between skin cancer and tanning bed use over a longer timeframe.

The study was slated for presentation on Monday at the International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, sponsored by the American Association for Cancer Research. Findings presented at medical meetings have not undergone peer review and are usually considered preliminary.

Netflix stock plunges on brutal 3Q, somber outlook (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Netflix jolted its already shell-shocked shareholders with a third-quarter financial report that portrayed a company in crisis.

Netflix's blooper reel, released Monday, included an even larger customer exodus than the company had foreseen after announcing an unpopular price increase in July. What's worse, the report contained a forecast calling for more defections from the largest U.S. video subscription service.

The backlash will deprive Netflix Inc. of some the revenue that management had been counting on to finance the company's expansion plans while it pays higher fees for Internet video streaming rights. The result: Netflix expects to post losses next year when it starts selling its steaming service in Britain and Ireland. The company didn't offer further specifics.

None of the developments pleased Wall Street as Netflix lost more than a quarter of its value after the bad news came out. If that sharp decline holds in Tuesday's trading, it will mark the first time Netflix's stock price has fallen below $100 in nearly 14 months.

Netflix shares shed $31.19, or more than 26 percent, to $87.35 in Monday's extended trading.

It's the latest setback for a former stock market darling whose shares topped $300 just 4 1/2 months ago. Netflix's market value had already plunged by about 60 percent, or nearly $9 billion, before Monday's late sell-off.

Netflix lost its luster among consumers and investors by raising prices as much as 60 percent in the U.S. and bungling an attempt to spin off its DVD-by-mail rental service.

The company, which is based in Los Gatos, Calif., ended September with 23.8 million U.S. subscribers, down about 800,000 from June. Netflix had predicted it would lose about 600,000 U.S. subscribers in a forecast released last month.

Management expects to gain U.S. subscribers in the current quarter, although Netflix didn't set a specific target. But a substantial number of Netflix's customers are expected to choose between renting DVDs through the mail or streaming video over high-speed Internet connections _instead of paying for both services.

The biggest hit is expected on the DVD side, a service that Netflix has been de-emphasizing to save money on mailing costs as its spends more to license movies and TV shows for its Internet video library. The company expects its DVD subscribers to fall from 13.9 million as of Sept. 30 to as low as 10.3 million at the end of December. Streaming subscriptions in the U.S. may rise by as much as 100,000 subscribers in the quarter, according to the company's projections.

The outlook looks even grimmer, considering that Netflix consistently added 1 million to 2 million subscribers per quarter leading up to the price increases.

From a financial perspective, Netflix did better than analysts expected in the July-September period.

The company earned $62.5 million, or $1.16, per share, in the third quarter. That compared to income of $38 million, or 70 cents per share, at the same time last year.

The performance topped the average earnings estimate of 96 cents per share among analysts polled by FactSet.

Netflix's revenue climbed 49 percent from the same time last year to nearly $822 million ? about $9 million above analyst estimates.

Netflix's downfall leaves CEO Reed Hastings in a precarious position.

Once regarded as one of the savviest leaders in technology and entertainment, Hastings has turned into a punching bag for frustrated Netflix customers and shareholders. Many of them are still befuddled by his recent decision making.

After Netflix's higher prices kicked in on Sept. 1, Hastings amplified the outrage by outlining a plan to toss the DVD rental business onto a separate website called Qwikster. The split from the Internet streaming service got panned so badly that Hastings reversed course in less than three weeks.

"We've hurt our hard-earned reputation and stalled our domestic growth," Hastings wrote in a letter accompanying Monday's third-quarter report. "But our long-term streaming opportunity is as compelling as ever and we are moving as quickly as we can to repair our reputation and return to growth."

Japan sounds intervention alarm on strong yen (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan's finance minister put traders on alert for possible currency intervention on Monday after the yen's rise to a record high against the dollar threatens to further squeeze exporters' profits and hold back economic recovery.

In a sign of resilience, Japan's exports growth slowed down less than expected in September, finance ministry data showed, but economists warn that persistent yen strength and Europe's sovereign debt woes pose increasing risks to external demand.

The Bank of Japan, which meets on Thursday, will probably cut its economic forecasts because of slowing global growth but keep monetary policy unchanged unless disappointment over Europe's plans to solve its crisis roils markets.

Even if the BOJ keeps policy unchanged this week, Japan's government and central bank may not be able to hold off from taking action much longer as safe-haven flows keep the yen stubbornly high against the U.S. currency.

"The dollar/yen rate fell sharply, to between 75 and 76 yen, in a short time. This is an utterly speculative move and not reflecting the economic fundamentals at all. This is regrettable," Finance Minister Jun Azumi told reporters.

"If this move becomes excessive, we have to take decisive action. I already instructed my staff on Saturday to be prepared to take action."

He added that the strong yen would have a major impact on Japan's export sector, especially the auto industry, and could dent the country's economic recovery from a slump triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Azumi spoke after the dollar hit a record low of 75.78 yen on trading platform EBS on Friday. That surpassed its previous record low of 75.94 yen in August, and brought back into focus the possibility of official intervention to weaken the Japanese currency.

The dollar rose slightly after Azumi's remark, but later ceded ground to trade around 76.23 yen.

Analysts do not rule out a currency intervention, most likely unilateral, if yen rises continue.

"Japan may intervene in the currency market if dollar/yen stays below 76 or falls below 75. Unless it intervenes, the yen may continue to rise and verbal warnings alone may not be able to reverse that trend," said Yoshiki Shinke, chief economist at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute.

Traders in Tokyo, however, were skeptical whether latest market action would serve as trigger for intervention, citing a broad sell-off in the dollar as the main driver and data showing margin traders have recently built up their long dollar/yen positions.

Since September last year, the government has intervened twice on its own and once jointly with other Group of Seven rich nations to weaken the yen, but the effects of intervention have proved short-lived.

Japan's exports rose 2.4 percent in September from a year earlier, boosted by shipments of cars and car parts. That compared with a median forecast for a 1.0 percent increase, and followed a 2.8 percent climb in the year to August.

Imports increased 12.1 percent in September, against a forecast of a 12.6 percent rise.

The trade balance turned to a surplus of 300.4 billion yen ($3.95 billion) following the previous month's deficit. That compared with a median forecast of a 198.8 billion yen surplus.

Exports to Asia, which account for more than half of Japan's total exports, edged up 0.2 percent from a year earlier, with China taking in 2.7 percent more Japanese goods than a year ago while exports to the United States were up 0.4 percent.

The Japanese economy probably rebounded in the third quarter from the damage caused by the March 11 disaster but is expected to slow to a crawl in the final quarter due to an intensifying euro-zone debt crisis that threatens to drag down the world economy, a Reuters poll shows.

Euro zone leaders are striving to agree on new steps to reduce Greece's debt, strengthen the capital of banks with exposure to troubled euro zone sovereigns and leverage the euro zone's rescue fund to stem contagion to bigger economies.

Brazil jury: Doctors killed patients by taking organs

A jury convicted three Brazilian doctors of killing four patients by removing their organs, which prosecutors said were used for transplants at an expensive private clinic.

Sao Paulo state Judge Marco Montemor sentenced doctors Rui Sacramento, Pedro Torrecillas and Mariano Fiore Junior to 17 years and six months each in prison.

Sacramento and Torrecillas were charged with murder after removing both kidneys from the patients and preparing the organs for transport. Fiore, a neurosurgeon, was charged as an accomplice for incorrectly declaring the patients brain dead and authorizing the harvest of their organs.

Another neurosurgeon who had been accused in the case, Antonio de Carvalho Monteiro, died last year.

Sacramento fainted when the sentence was read late Thursday, and family members of the victims who packed the court cried and hugged each other.

25 years for verdict
The case described by authorities as extremely complex took 25 years for a verdict to be handed down. Brazil's criminal justice system is notoriously slow and it isn't unusual for complicated cases to take years or even decades to work their way through the courts.

The case first emerged on Dec. 16, 1986, when the head of the University of Taubate's medical school realized an affiliated hospital had conducted a kidney transplant that he hadn't expected, said Sao Paulo state prosecutor Marcio Friggi de Carvalho.

Kalume looked up the records and exams connected to the transplant and found irregularities. He then investigated the team of doctors, and turned over the evidence he found to the Federal Counsel of Medicine, the agency that regulates and licenses medical doctors, Carvalho said.

Police took up the matter after the agency's investigation as the case made its way through Brazil's court system.

"They simply did not have the diagnosis of brain death," said Carvalho. "They opened people up, took out their kidneys, and sent them on."

Defense: Patients 'already dead'
Sergio Salgado Badaro, the defense attorney representing the doctors, had told the jury that convicting them would be a serious mistake and an injustice.

"If you convict them, you will be the first jury in the country to convict doctors for killing people who were already dead," he said in court.

Badaro also told reporters gathered outside the courtroom that his clients were not giving up: "I respect the jury's decision, but that doesn't mean I agree or that I'm not going to appeal."

Two organ recipients testified they paid up to $41,000 for the transplants with private doctors at a private clinic, and hadn't known the origin of their kidneys, Carvalho said.

The case didn't have a clear-cut connection to organ trafficking, since there was little documentation of the transactions, the prosecutor said. That's why the doctors were charged only in connection to the death of the patients, Carvalho said.

What is known is that the organs went from a public hospital, where transplants are free and waiting lists can be long, to an expensive private clinic serving patients who can pay out of their own pockets, court records show.

"You can't say there was the buying and selling of organs; there are no receipts," Carvalho said. "What we have is an informal, obscure context that is very problematic."

(AP) ? Kellen Moore threw three touchdown passes, Doug Martin scored twice and the Bronco defense and special teams did just enough to hold on and give No. 5 Boise State a 37-26 victory over Air Force Saturday.

Moore was precise as usual, going 23-of-29 for 265 yards. The victory was the 45th of his career and put him in a tie with former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy for the most wins all-time by a college quarterback. His second TD pass of the day, a 19-yarder to Matt Miller, gave him 122 for his career and pushed him past former BYU quarterback Ty Detmer for fourth best all-time.

Martin rushed for 125 yards on 21 carries, and his 15-yard score after taking a snap and dashing up the middle gave the Broncos (7-0, 2-0 Mountain West Conference) a 27-13 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter. At the time, the score gave the Broncos back the momentum and brought some relief to a sea of orange-clad fans that aren't used to seeing close games in the second half.

But Air Force (3-4, 0-3) and its potent running game bullied back in the first meeting of these new conference foes.

The Falcons came in with the nation's 10th best rushing attack, and they gouged the Broncos' defense repeatedly with big runs and long drives that chewed up clock and kept Moore and the Boise State offense off the field.

After Martin's score, the Falcons marched 80 yards in 18 plays and pulled within 27-20 when Asher Clark ran it in from the 3. The Falcons' ground game was led by Mike DeWitt's 108 yards on 18 carries and the Falcons rushed for a total of 265 yards on a whopping 65 attempts.

The Falcons dominated time of possession 36:18 to Boise State's 23:42 and forced two Broncos turnovers in the red zone.

But Falcons' defense, decimated by injuries on the line, couldn't find a way to shut down Moore and the limited time he had to lead the Boise State offense. The Broncos managed to roll up 423 yards of total offense, and the special teams added a touchdown when Hunter White scooped up a fumble on a fake punt and rumbled 16 yards to put the Broncos up 20-7 late in the first half.

After Air Force manufactured a second long drive ? this one 18 plays in 80 yards ? to pull within 27-20, Moore engineered a 10-play, 69-yard scoring drive that was capped by his 2-yard TD toss to Martin. On the drive, Moore was 5 of 6 and threw a key third-down pass to Mitch Burroughs that extended the drive.

Air Force responded quickly, thanks to a 51-yard pass from Tim Jefferson to Zack Kauth that gave the Falcons a first-and-goal at the 3. Jefferson scored two plays later on a keeper, but the Bronco defensive end Tyrone Crawford blocked the extra point, making the score 34-26 with 3:30 remaining.

The Falcons tried an onside kick, but the ball was recovered by Bronco receiver Tyler Shoemaker. Moore then moved the Broncos into scoring position and Dan Goodale booted a 25-yard field goal to put the game away.

Report: Google mulling role in possible Yahoo bid

Google is exploring the possibility of helping to finance a possible deal by others to acquire Yahoo. That's according to a published report by the Wall Street Journal on Saturday.

Google Inc. has talked to at least two-private equity firms about potentially assisting them to finance a deal to buy Yahoo Inc.'s core business, according to the story, which cited a person familiar with the matter, and did not identify the source.

The Journal said Google and prospective partners have held early-stage discussions, but haven't assembled a formal proposal. The source said Google may not end up pursuing a bid.

Messages that The Associated Press left on Saturday seeking comment from representatives of Google and Yahoo were not immediately returned.

Exclusive: Alberta: EU oil sands ranking threatens (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? The government of Alberta, home to the bulk of Canada's oil sands, has written to EU experts voicing "grave concerns" that the bloc's plans to rank unconventional oil as a highly polluting fuel are unfair and a potential threat to trade ties.

"The proposed measure has been deliberately crafted in such a way as to discriminate specifically and uniquely against oil sands derived fuels," said a copy of the letter seen by Reuters.

"Alberta believes that the fuel quality directive implementing measure as it currently stands would be incompatible with the EU's international trade obligations."

The European Commission's Legal Service has said the EU tar sand proposals could probably be defended if Canada were to take its case to the World Trade Organization, in another letter seen by Reuters on Friday.

"The Commission's Legal Service has provided reassurance that the greenhouse gas methodology set out in the implementing directive... may probably be defended in the case of a challenge before the WTO," it said.

Both letters were sent to EU government experts ahead of a meeting next Tuesday where they will debate a proposed green ranking of fuels, which is designed to enable fuel suppliers to identify the most carbon-intensive options.

The proposed ranking assigns tar sands a default greenhouse gas value of 107 grams of carbon per megajoule, making it clear to buyers that it has a greater climate impact than conventional crude oil, whose value is 87.5 grams, an EU source said.

The letter on behalf of the Alberta government -- signed by its United Kingdom office and sent to all 27 members of the expert committee -- argues there is no scientific reason to differentiate between Canada's oil sands and other crude sources.

EU Commission sources have said the measures do not label only Canadian oil sands as carbon intensive, but also those from Venezuela. They have said the measures take account of carbon emitted across the entire life-cycle of a fuel.

If any oil sand-derived product can demonstrate that over its life-cycle its emissions are less than 107 grams per megajoule, only its actual emissions will be taken into account.

Two of the other unconventional fuel sources have higher values than oil sands. They are oil shale at 131.3 and coal-to-liquid at 172.

EXTENSIVE RESEARCH

Environmental groups have strongly backed the Commission position, saying it is supported by extensive research.

"It's not true that oil sands are unfairly singled out," said Nusa Urbancic, fuels campaigner at green transport lobby group T&E. "The Commission has spent a year reviewing all the available science, including that provided by the oil sands industry and the conclusion is unequivocal that oil sands are more carbon-intensive."

European Green politicians said the plans should help to ensure dirty fuel does not enter European petrol pumps.

"It is now up to EU member states to approve the proposals and we call on the Council not to succumb to pressure from the tar sands lobby," Green member of the European Parliament Satu Hassi said in a statement.

The EU green fuel ranking completes legislation introduced in 2008, when the EU agreed to reduce the carbon intensity of its transport fuels by 6 percent by 2020.

That is part of a wider target to reduce EU carbon emissions by 20 percent by 2020.

A decision on whether to include tar sands in the ranking was delayed after Canada previously said the EU's standards to promote greener fuels would harm the market for its oil sands.

An EU source said Tuesday's committee meeting would probably not get as far as a vote and would instead meet again for further discussion and a vote at some stage.

Once the expert committee approves the measures, the European Parliament has three months to pass or reject them. If rejected, the Commission can submit a revised proposal.

Oil companies active in Canada include BP, Total and Anglo-Dutch firm Royal Dutch Shell. Sources said the British and Dutch governments could be sympathetic to Alberta's position.

The oil sands debate coincides with difficult talks between Canada and the European Union on a proposed free trade deal. The two sides have yet to agree on a range of issues, including intellectual property and market access for agricultural products.

Canadian Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver suggested earlier this month Ottawa could take the EU to the World Trade Organization if the Europeans adopted the fuel quality directive.

Oliver has travelled to Europe to press Canada's case and in an interview with Reuters on Friday in London said the EU's plans were perverse.

A spokesman for the Canadian trade minister said last week the free trade discussions were a separate issue.

"While we disagree with this draft directive, this matter is not linked to our commitment to productive free trade discussions with the European Union," the spokesman said.
