Stuck in a rut?

The only difference between a rut and a grave is their dimensions!

Have you ever felt stuck in a rut? Like you can?t get where you want to go or can?t break free of the confines of your current state or situation? Stuck at a level and having a hard time getting to the next?

You need to be willing to do something about it. The only difference between a rut and a grave is their dimensions!? Allow yourself to stay in that rut too long and you?re facing the slow painful death of your dreams.

If you?re treading water these five steps will help you move forward. 5 Steps to Success

1. Accept responsibility for your own life and the position you?re at in your life right now.

It?s human nature to look elsewhere for the source of our problems but the truth is the older you are the more responsible YOU are for YOUR circumstances. Many things are out of our control and bad things do happen to good people but we also make choices every day that contribute to our conditions. The one quality all successful people have is the ability to take on responsibility.

Think about your life; where are you shirking responsibility or playing the victim? Blaming others for the bad choices you made? Failing to follow through on things you know you should be doing? Take time to examine your life and how you?re spending it. Where can you take responsibility to make changes even if your past choices haven?t led to your present predicaments? Getting out of a rut begins with the acknowledgement that you must make the choice / choices to do so.

2. Know where you want to be.

Most people hope and dream of being successful but their goals never become more specific than that. Hope is not a strategy! To quote baseball great Yogi Berra, ?If you don?t know where you want to go, you might end up someplace else.?

Define where you want to go in life. It?s not a guarantee you will reach your goals or achieve your dreams but if do not define them it?s almost guaranteed that you will not!

You?re going to spend your life doing something, it might as well be what you really want to do. Give yourself a target, write out your goals and describe your dreams. Be specific!

3. Divide your dream into manageable parts.

It?s paralyzing to have a dream or a goal with no realistic way of achieving it. Break down your dream or goal into smaller segments that you accomplish with focused effort. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. :)

Start with your dream, your goal. To figure out the necessary steps to get there, break it down from your dream, your ultimate dream / goal, to annual goals, to monthly or weekly steps and on down to what you need to do today, this very minute (well as soon as you?re done reading this).

4. Take action ? TODAY.

Here you are, at the next step. Taking action. All the dreaming and hoping, planning and goal setting in the world won?t do anything for you if you don?t follow through.

What kind of action can you take today, right now, that will start you moving out of your rut and take you one small step closer to your goal? It doesn?t have to be big or even significant but it needs to be a step in the right direction.

5. Grow into your tomorrow.

While the steps you take today don?t need to be earth shattering, you don?t want every step forward to be small and insignificant. Your steps must become progressively bigger, smarter and more strategic. Be intentional about getting better every day. The only thing that guarantees that you will be better tomorrow is growing today.

On a personal note I have to say, sometimes it can be embarrassing .. the rut we find ourselves in, the condition we have somehow gotten to. It can be frightening to admit to ourselves let alone someone else that we?re stuck. Please .. please take this to heart .. there is no shame in getting stuck throughout our lives. But what a shame it is to stay that way when we have a choice to change.

I have been on both sides of the fence many times, asking for help to move forward and being in a position to offer help to those who need it .. that?s the way life works .. we?re here to help each other.
