What the Olympic Opening Ceremonies Looked Like From a Performer's Hidden Camera [Video]

One of the performers appearing in the industrial revolution section of the Olympic opening ceremonies had the foresight to build a hidden camera into their costume, giving the rest of us a first-person view of what it's like to be part of the spectacle. It's a unique angle that not even NBC could have provided, including behind-the-scene glimpses before everyone was paraded out into the performance. [PetaPixel] More »

90% Bernie

Richard Linklater's "Bernie" is very enjoyable, and it's funny in a dark, unique way. Jack Black gives a wonderful performance as the title character, a mortician and funeral director who appears to have no gender and no sexuality. But ultimately the film doesn't have much to say. It's a good time, and it's worth seeing. But don't expect too much. The film is set in east Texas and is based on actual events. A very unique funeral director becomes the most beloved person in his town, surprisingly enough. When he commits a shocking murder, the town rallies around him, calling to mind "Dog Day Afternoon." The best thing by far, however, are the interviews with actual east Texans who knew the real Bernie. Somehow Linklater is able to get these people to express themselves on camera, using their wildly colorful local slang, and I howled out loud many times. But it's not a very strong statement about the film that the interviews are the best part.

PFT: Fitzgerald unfazed by QB competition

nfl_g_snoopdog_400Getty Images

Jets rookie WR Stephen Hill is drawing praise for doing a lot of what he likely will be doing this year:? blocking.

Pats WR Donte? Stallworth returns to New England having ?matured as a player, matured as a person.?? (Killing a guy while driving a car under the influence tends to do that.)

The goal for getting a new lease in place for the Bills officially has been moved to the end of the year.

When it comes to hairstyles, Dolphins rookies are sporting the modified Cruella deVille.

With WR Antonio Brown and not WR Mike Wallace getting a new contract from the Steelers, Snoop Dogg may need an explanation.

Browns DT Ahtyba Rubin is recovering from a procedure to repair a slight pelvic tear.

Bengals LB Brandon Joiner is on the reserve/did not report list for a good reason; he?s serving a three-year prison sentence in Texas.? (Shouldn?t they have traded him to the Lions by now?)

Is Michael Oher finally ready to play left tackle?? (With Bryant McKinnie AWOL, it may not matter.)

The Jaguars have released FB Naufahu Tahi.? (Brad Childress wants to know why they didn?t they just make him the extra man on the roster.)

Colts coach Chuck Pagano?s first training camp as head coach opens on Saturday.

Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck put business first in the offseason; ?I played it more safe and I didn?t really travel,? Hasselbeck said. ?I didn?t really go anywhere for fun.? Everywhere I went, I had a purpose.? If I was going somewhere, then throwing and working out was priority No. 1 all the time.?

Texans LB Connor Barwin has traded in the Cosmo Kramer for the Gary Kubiak.

A jury has awarded $5.2 million against Chargers doctor David Chao for prescribing a cold-therapy device after knee surgery; Chao has now been on the wrong end of multiple malpractice cases.? (But, please, keep letting him provide care to elite professional athletes.)

Broncos LB Von Miller thinks that the team?s seventh defensive coordinator in seven seasons is ?laid back?; Jack Del Rio says Miller and the rest of the defense are in for a surprise.

The Torn ACL Trio (Eric Berry, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki) all practiced for the Chiefs on Friday; ?I feel I?ve got my swag back,? Charles said.

Here are five questions for the Raiders.

Our old pal (and former PFT contributor) Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com tears into Cowboys WR Dez Bryant for keeping his mouth shut in the wake of his recent arrest.

Giants co-owner John Mara was surprised by the number of media at training camp: ??I can?t believe so many of you are here.? Tebow isn?t here.?

Former Redskins QB Colt Brennan has been arrested in Hawaii for suspicion of drunk driving and drug possession.

Eagles TE Brent Celek (knee) is expected to miss only a few days.

A lawsuit against former Vikings WR and current ESPN analyst Cris Carter involving a rap-song investment gone bad contends that Carter was close to becoming the Alabama receivers coach in 2011.? (It?s unknown whether Carter ever declared, ?I?m not going to be the Alabama receivers coach.?)

Bears K Robbie Gould thinks it would be a ?big risk? for the team to let LB Brian Urlacher become a free agent.? (It also would be a ?big risk? for the Bears to make personnel decisions based on the advice of a kicker.)

Packers LT Marshall Newhouse is gaining confidence via praise from his coach ? and practice against LB Clay Matthews.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson apparently can?t walk down the street in Mexico.? (Sergio Mendes can sympathize.)

Newly re-signed Falcons LB Mike Peterson is now known as ?Unc?; ?I?m everybody?s uncle around here now,? Peterson said.

Saints CB Patrick Robinson made the play of the day on Friday, stealing a Drew Brees pass away from TE Jimmy Graham.

Falcons RB Jason Snelling wants more opportunities on offense.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera hopes increased competition will create increased urgency in training camp; among other things, both kicking positions are up for grabs.

The mentor of 49ers LB Aldon Smith says that his off-field problems will be a ?small blip on his radar.?? (If getting stabbed twice is a small blip on the radar, that?s a big-ass radar.)

The Cardinals are holding their annual Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday.? (QB Kevin Kolb may want to wear ear plugs.)

Rams TE Michael Hoomanawanui is able to practice after suffering a torn ACL on November 13.

Will the Seahawks quarterback competition be reduced from three to two?? ?The answer is yes, I guess,? coach Pete Carroll said.? ?You?re just going to have to suck it up and wait.?

The A-Z of Internet Marketing Terms (Part II) | ArtDriver

The A-Z of Internet Marketing TermsWelcome to the second instalment of the internet marketing glossary, your guide to clear definitions behind the technical jargon associated with the online world! Whether you are a small business or a newbie at an SEO company this guide has been put together with you in mind, to help you feel confident and to expand your knowledge of some of the key terminology used within internet marketing.

Nofollow Links

When you are working hard to build high quality links to your site you need to make sure that the site offering you a link is not just offering you a nofollow link. A nofollow link means there is a HTML element in there that instructs search engines not to take the link into consideration, in other words the link made will not be used to assist with your rankings (rankings will be covered later on).

Outbound Links

Remember Inbound links from part one? Well this is the opposite! Outbound links are links created on your site made to another page either on the same site or to another?s. Outbound links can go to helpful resources, additional on-site information or another person?s site as the result of allowing guest posts on your site.

PPC

PPC, otherwise known as pay per click is a formula within internet marketing that is used to price adverts online. Advertisers will agree on a cost per click with internet publishers and this will be paid each time the ad is clicked on whether or not a sale is made as a result of the click through.

Query

A search query is another way of describing the keywords entered into a search engine to return relevant results.

Rankings

When talking of rankings in relation to internet marketing, this is the term used to describe where your site is ranking for certain keywords. For instance if you are a cake company and when someone types ?cakes? ?into a search engine your site is the first one to be listed, your ranking would be page one, position one.

SERPs

If you are wondering around the office or talking to your SEO consultant and they mention ?SERPS? you may be wondering what on earth they are talking about! SERPS is actually short for Search Engine Results Page. In short, a SERP is simply a list of web pages.

Tracking Code

This is data normally found in a URL that allows marketers to understand what is effective and what could perhaps be amended with regards to aspects of their online marketing efforts.

URL

The term URL is short for Uniform Resource Locater and is your websites unique formation of letters and symbols that create the address to your webpage.

Viral

Most of us have heard of the term ?going viral? often in relation to something along the lines of a popular video found on YouTube. In a nutshell, viral marketing is a process whereby the advert created, whether it?s in the form of a guest post, an infographic, a video etc. is so interesting that people naturally want to share the content, causing it to ?go viral?.

Web Metrics

This can also be referred to as analytics and is incredibly important when it comes to internet marketing. The reason for its importance is that it?s the collection of data about the website and those who visit it. Web metrics can tell you pretty much everything you need to know including how long people are spending on your site, how they arrived on your site and the actions they took whilst browsing the site such as filling in contact form etc.

XML

XML stands for extensible markup language and is much like HTML (discussed in part one). Although they are similar, they were created for different purposes as XML was designed to carry information whereas HTML was designed to display it.

Yoast

If you are familiar with the CMS WordPress (as discussed in part one), then you may also have heard of Yoast. Yoast is a WordPress SEO plugin that incorporates numerous features such as the ability to analyse a particular page and make tweaks in line with this for optimisation purposes.

Zuckerberg

Ok, so this might be a little bit of a cheat as we get to Z, but Mark Zuckerberg is an important man to know about in the world of internet marketing! Until him, businesses really didn?t have that much to do with social media, but Zuckerberg?s Facebook changed all of this to the point where Facebook now features heavily within many internet marketing campaigns along with Twitter and various other platforms.

So there we have it, a complete A-Z of internet marketing acronyms, phrases, people and codes to name just a few! Keep part one and two bookmarked for those times when you need a little refresher and continue to research this ever-changing industry to deliver the best results whether it is for your company?s own marketing campaign or a clients.

Tormek sharpener question. - Family Woodworking

Well, as usual, I have to put in my two-cents worth.

Several people who had used both, told me that they preferred the Jet slow-speed sharpener to the Tormek. All of them also said that they preferred the Tormek gouge jig to the Jet (it fits the Jet perfectly).

I purchased the Jet. There is a very sad and a very wonderful story behind that. However, I will skip it here (you didn't know that I could do that did you).

Final result (the way I do things now, a couple years later):

1---I always sharpen my flat chisels and plane irons with a WorkSharp 3000. It is so easy, so fast, so sharp that anything else feels cumbersome and inefficient. Depending on how dull I let the tool become, I can resharpen to a mirror, shave your arm sharpness in 10 to 30 seconds. If the edge had a small nick in it, the time would get up into the 2 to 4 minute bracket. If it had a big nick, I would probably go to the dry grinder or work from the top on the WorkSharp 3000.

Please understand---I have absolutely no sharpening genes in my body. I never had a "Wow" sharp tool in my life until I had the 3000.

2---I always change blade shape with my dry 1725 RPM grinder using white stones. It is fast and easy to get the general shape (actually fairly darn accurate shape). I have a water cup built into my grinder table. I use it after every pass and so I have no problems losing temper.

3---Most of the time I do very slight regrinds and finish sharpening of gouges on the Jet. However, I just use it as a Slow Speed Wet Stone. I use a simple home made Wolverine type setup to sharpen gouges on the Jet. The home made unit was made from scrap. It probably took 30 minutes to build. It probably took another 45 minutes to find the "right" piece of scrap and lay it out so I could use it with all of my gouges, cut-offs, etc. Any 10 inch slow speed, wet unit would work fine.

I do prefer the 10 inch wheels. 8 inch give me a little more concave surface than I like. This is definitely not a big problem. If my wheel was 8 inch, I would use it happily.

Would I buy another Jet or Tormek? Absolutely not.

I do sharpen everything around the house: shop tools, Myrna's precious and expensive knives, hatchets, axes, weed pluckers, hoes, shovels and scissors. However, I only do the very mildest of work on scissors because I can purchase a new pair for very little money and I am not really set up for scissors.

Enjoy,

JimB

Romney ad with Olympic footage goes dark on YouTube

Olympic-themed political ads are getting yanked from the Internet. Priorities USA Action, a super PAC supporting President Barack Obama, removed a campaign ad from its website Thursday after the International Olympics Committee (IOC) said it infringed copyright laws. And now, an ad from Mitt Romney's campaign featuring images from the Olympic Games is also off the Web.

A Romney campaign ad released earlier this year that includes a brief clip from the 2002 Olympic Games has been set to "private" on the official campaign YouTube page. It is not clear if the new classification of the video is related to an IOC request, but timing suggests it may be the cause.

Romney, who currently is attending the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games in London, was the CEO of the Olympic Organizing Committee when the Winter Games were held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002. His leadership of the committee is often credited for "saving" the 2002 Games, which were in financial turmoil when Romney took the helm in 1999.

Sandrine Tonge, a spokeswoman for the IOC, told Yahoo News Thursday that the Committee "does not allow footage of the Olympic Games or an association with the Olympic rings to be used for political purposes," which could prove to be a headache for Republicans who want to highlight Romney's success ten years ago.

A spokeswoman from the Romney campaign did not immediately return a request for comment about the removal of the ad.

IDC: Samsung extends lead in smartphone sales

(AP) ? A new report says Samsung has extended its lead over Apple in smartphone sales, in part because its new Galaxy phones came out before Apple updated its iPhone.

The research group IDC says Samsung Electronics Co. had a market share of 33 percent in the second quarter, up from 17 percent a year ago. Apple's fell slightly to 17 percent, from 19 percent a year ago. The drop is typical several months after the release of a new iPhone model.

Samsung's Galaxy S3 phones got good reviews when it came out late in the second quarter. Apple's iPhone 4S came out in October, and a new one isn't due until this fall.

IDC says the big question is how well Samsung's phones will sell once the new iPhone comes out.

PFT: Suh sued by woman after December crash

James HarrisonAP

Before the question can be asked regarding whether current players care about former players, the first question is whether the current players even know who the former players are.

Earlier this week, a concussion lawsuit led by former Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler pointed to the fact that the league?s Super Bowl XLVI commercial regarding decades of changes to the rules fails to mention ?how recidivist violators like James Harrison (who has had five illegal hits on quarterbacks in three seasons) are allowed to continue to play the game.?

We noticed that language, appearing at paragraph 145 and page 65 of the 209-paragraph, 80-page complaint, we mentioned it, Alan Robinson of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review repeated it, and Harrison was asked about it on Thursday by Tim Benz of WXDX radio.

Here?s the relevant exchange.

Benz:? ?James, are you aware of the story about the lawsuit mentioning your name in Philadelphia and if so what?s your reaction to it??

Harrison:? ?I?m not aware of it.?

Benz:? ?Ken Stabler and some of the other former pro football players in a concussion suit referenced you as a guy that was a repeat offender and maybe should be out of the game.? When you hear former players say that about you ??

Harrison:? ?Who is ? Ken who??

Benz:? ?Ken Stabler.?

Harrison:? ?Who is that??

Benz:? ?Former Raider quarterback.?

Harrison:? ?Never heard of him.? His opinion doesn?t matter to me.?

Frankly, Stabler?s opinion shouldn?t matter to Harrison.? But it?s a little surprising that Harrison has never heard of the guy.

We realize that plenty of the men who play pro football aren?t passionate fans of the game.? And we don?t expect football players to be football historians.? But for a key member of the Steelers to not know the name of a Super Bowl-era quarterback who won a Super Bowl and who played quarterback in some of the most celebrated games in Steelers history is a little strange.

Then again, if Ken Stabler?s opinion doesn?t matter to Harrison, mine definitely doesn?t.

?Who is ? Mike who??

Nano-FTIR: A new era in modern analytical chemistry

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? Researchers from the nanoscience research center NanoGUNE (San Sebastian, Spain), the university of Munich (LMU, Germany) and Neaspec GmbH (Martinsried, Germany) present a new instrumental development that solves a prime question of materials science and nanotechnology: how to chemically identify materials at the nanometer scale.

An ultimate goal in modern chemistry and materials science is the non-invasive chemical mapping of materials with nanometer scale resolution. A variety of high-resolution imaging techniques exist (e.g. electron microscopy or scanning probe microscopy), however, their chemical sensitivity cannot meet the demands of modern chemical nano-analytics. Optical spectroscopy, on the other hand, offers high chemical sensitivity but its resolution is limited by diffraction to about half the wavelength, thus preventing nanoscale resolved chemical mapping.

Nanoscale chemical identification and mapping of materials now becomes possible with nano-FTIR, an optical technique that combines scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. By illuminating the metalized tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM) with a broadband infrared laser, and analyzing the backscattered light with a specially designed Fourier Transform spectrometer, the researchers could demonstrate local infrared spectroscopy with a spatial resolution of less than 20 nm. "Nano-FTIR thus allows for fast and reliable chemical identification of virtually any infrared-active material on the nanometer scale," says Florian Huth, who performed the experiments.

An important aspect of enormous practical relevance is that the nano-FTIR spectra match extremely well with conventional FTIR spectra, while the spatial resolution is increased by more than a factor of 300 compared to conventional infrared spectroscopy. "The high sensitivity to chemical composition combined with ultra-high resolution makes nano-FTIR a unique tool for research, development and quality control in polymer chemistry, biomedicine and pharmaceutical industry" concludes Rainer Hillenbrand, leader of the Nanooptics group at nanoGUNE.

For example, nano-FTIR can be applied for the chemical identification of nanoscale sample contaminations. Fig. 1 shows AFM images of a PMMA film on a Si surface. While the AFM phase contrast indicates the presence of a 100 nm size contamination, the determination of its chemical identity remains elusive from these images. Using nano-FTIR to record a local infrared spectrum in the center of the particle and comparing it with standard FTIR database spectra, the contamination can be identified as a PDMS particle.

PART FOURTEEN***************(FINAL)**************INTERNET

Overview

Some see mobile advertising as closely related to online or internet advertising, though its reach is far greater ? currently, most mobile advertising is targeted at mobile phones, that came estimably to a global total of 4.6 billion as of 2009. Notably computers, including desktops and laptops, are currently estimated at 1.1 billion globally.

It is probable that advertisers and media industry will increasingly take account of a bigger and fast-growing mobile market, though it remains at around 1% of global advertising spent. Mobile media is evolving rapidly and while mobile phones will continue to be the mainstay, it is not clear whether mobile phones based on cellular backhaul or smartphones based on WiFi hot spot or WiMAX hot zone will also strengthen. However, such is the emergence of this form of advertising, that there is now a dedicated global awards ceremony organised every year by Visiongain.

As mobile phones outnumber TV sets by over 3 to 1,?and PC based internet users by over 4 to 1, and the total laptop and desktop PC population by nearly 5 to 1,[citation needed] advertisers in many markets have recently rushed to this media.?In Spain 75% of mobile phone owners receive ads,[citation needed] in France 62%[citation needed] and in Japan 54%.[citation needed] More remarkably as mobile advertising matures, like in the most advanced markets, the user involvement also matures. In Japan today, already 44% of mobile phone owners click on ads they receive on their phones. Mobile advertising was worth 900 million dollars in Japan alone.?According to the research firm Berg Insight the global mobile advertising market that was estimated to ? 1 billion in 2008.Furthermore, Berg Insight forecasts the global mobile advertising market to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 43 percent to ? 8.7 billion in 2014[1].

Types of mobile ads

In some markets, this type of advertising is most commonly seen as a Mobile Web Banner (top of page) or Mobile Web Poster (bottom of page banner), while in others, it is dominated by SMS advertising (which has been estimated at over 90% of mobile marketing revenue worldwide). Other forms include MMS advertising, advertising within mobile games and mobile videos, during mobile TV receipt, full-screen interstitials, which appear while a requested item of mobile content or mobile web page is loading up, and audio advertisements that can take the form of a jingle before a voicemail recording, or an audio recording played while interacting with a telephone-based service such as movie ticketing or directory assistance.

The Mobile Marketing Association and the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) has published mobile advertising guidelines,[2][3] but it is difficult to keep such guidelines current in such a fast-developing area.

The effectiveness of a mobile media ad campaign can be measured in a variety of ways. The main measurements are impressions (views) and click-through rates. They are also sold to advertisers by views (Cost Per Impression) or by click-through (Cost Per Click). Additional measurements include conversion rates, such as click-to-call rates and other degrees of interactive measurement.

Mobile media can run on a mobile web page or within a mobile application, often referred to as in-App.[4].

Mobile Rich Media

In addition to standard mobile display banners, a growing trend is to include rich media execution within the banner ads. This includes banners that would expand to a larger size, offering advertisers a larger display to communicate their message. Games within the banner to make the experience more interactive or a video within the banner space.

There are limitations rich media on mobile because all of the coding must be done in HTML5, since the iOS does not support flash.

Handsets display and corresponding ad images

There are hundreds of handsets in the market and they differ by screen size and supported technologies (e.g. MMS, WAP 2.0). For color images, formats such as PNG, JPEG, GIF and BMP are typically supported, along with the monochrome WBMP format. The following gives an overview of various handset screen sizes and a recommended image size for each type.[5]

History

Martin Cooper invented a portable handset in 1973, when he was a project manager at Motorola. It was almost three decades after the idea of cellular communications was introduced by Bell Laboratories. Two decades later, cellular phones made a commercial debut in the mass market in the early 1990s. In the early days of cellular handsets, phone functionality was limited to dialing, and voice input/output.

When the second generation of mobile telecoms (so-called 2G) was introduced in Finland by Radiolinja (now Elisa) on the GSM standard (now the world?s most common mobile technology with over 2 billion users) in 1991, the digital technology introduced data services. SMS text messaging was the first such service. The first person-to-person SMS text message was sent in Finland in December 1994. SMS (Short Message Service) gradually began to grow, becoming the largest data service by number of users in the world, currently with 74% of all mobile subscribers or 2.4 billion people active users of SMS in 2007.

One advantage of SMS is that while even in conference, users are able to send and receive brief messages unobtrusively, while enjoying privacy. Even in such environments as in a restaurant, caf?, bank, travel agency office, and so on, the users can enjoy some privacy by sending/receiving brief text messages in an unobtrusive way.

It would take six years from the launch of SMS until the first case of advertising would appear on this new data media channel, when a Finnish news provider offered free news headlines via SMS, sponsored by advertising. This led to rapid experimentation in mobile advertising and mobile marketing, and the world?s first conference to discuss mobile advertising was held in London in 2000, sponsored by the Wireless Marketing Association (which later merged into the Mobile Marketing Association). The first books to discuss mobile advertising were Ahonen?s M-Profits and Haig?s Mobile Marketing in 2002. Several major mobile operators around the world launched their own mobile advertising arms, like Aircross in South Korea, owned by the parents of SK Telecoms the biggest mobile operator, or like D2 Communications in Japan, the joint venture of Japan?s largest mobile operator NTT DoCoMo and Dentsu, Japan?s largest ad agency.

Mobile as media

This unobtrusive two-way communications caught the attention of media industry and advertisers as well as cellphone makers and telecom operators. Eventually, SMS became a new media ? called the ?seventh mass media channel? by several media and mobile experts ? and even more, it is a two-way mobile media, as opposed to one-way immobile media like radios, newspapers and TV. Besides, the immediacy of responsiveness in this two-way media is a new territory found for media industry and advertisers, who are eager to measure up market response immediately. Additionally, the possibility of fast delivery of the messages and the ubiquity of the technology (it does not require any additional functionality from the mobile phone, all devices available today are capable of receiving SMS), make it ideal for time- and location-sensitive advertising, such as customer loyalty offers (ex. shopping centres, large brand stores), SMS promotions of events, etc. To leverage this strength of SMS advertising, timely and reliable delivery of messages is paramount, which is guaranteed by some SMS gateway providers.

Mobile media has begun to draw more significant attention from media giants and advertising industry since the mid-2000s, based on a view that mobile media was to change the way advertisements were made, and that mobile devices can form a new media sector. Despite this, revenues are still a small fraction of the advertising industry as a whole but are most certainly on the rise. Informa reported that mobile advertising in 2007 was worth $2.2 billion. This is less than 0.5% of the approximately $450 billion global advertising industry.

Types of mobile advertising are expected to change rapidly. In other words, mobile technology will come up with a strong push for identifying newer and unheard-of mobile multimedia, with the result that subsequent media migration will greatly stimulate a consumer behavioral shift and establish a paradigm shift in mobile advertising. A major media migration is on, as desktop Internet evolves into mobile Internet. One typical case in point is Nielsen?s recent buyout of Telephia.

However it should be kept in mind that the rapid change in the technology used by mobile advertisers can also have adverse effect to the number of consumers being reached by the mobile advertisements, due to technical limitations of their mobile devices. Because of that, campaigns that aim to achieve wide response or are targeting lower income groups might be better off relying on older, more widespread mobile advertising technologies, such as SMS.

Viral marketing

As mobile is an interactive mass media similar to the internet, advertisers are eager to utilize and make use of viral marketing methods, by which one recipient of an advertisement on mobile, will forward that to a friend. This allows users to become part of the advertising experience. At the bare minimum mobile ads with viral abilities can become powerful interactive campaigns. At the extreme, they can become engagement marketing experiences. A key element of mobile marketing campaigns is the most influential member of any target audience or community, which is called the alpha user

Privacy concern

Advocates have raised the issue of privacy. Targeted mobile marketing requires customization of ad content to reach interested and relevant customers. To customize such behavioral personal data, user profiling, data mining and other behavior watch tools are employed, and privacy advocates warn that this may cause privacy infringement.[7]

Some mobile carriers offer freebie or cheaper rate plans in exchange for SMS or other mobile ads. However, mobile TV and mobile search may override this privacy concern, as soon as they are implemented on a full-blown basis. In a naive way to override privacy concern, however, User?s prior consent needs to be obtained through membership to join or User account to set up. Both mobile TV and mobile search may supersede the way of getting Users? prior consent through membership or User account because users are free to choose mobile TV channels or mobile search services on a voluntary basis.

Interactivity

Mobile devices aim to outgrow the domain of voice-intensive cellphones and to enter a new world of multimedia mobile devices, like laptops, PDA phones and smartphones. Unlike the conventional one-way media like TV, radio and newspaper, web media has enabled two-way traffic, thereby introducing a new phase of interactive advertising, regardless of whether static or mobile. This user-centric approach was noted at the 96th annual conference of Association of National Advertisers in 2006, which described ?a need to replace decades worth of top-down marketing tactics with bottom-up, grass-roots approaches?. Many use 2d bar codes to make offline print material more interactive with their mobile device. This has been proven to be successful in Japan, UK, Philippines and has been catching on in Northern America.

Mobile device issues

Coincidentally, however, mobile devices are encountering technological bottlenecks in terms of battery life, formats, and safety issue

In a broad sense, mobile devices are categorically broken down into portable and stationary equipment. Technically, mobile devices are categorized as below:

  • Handheld [portable]
  • Laptop, including ultraportable [portable]
  • Dashtop, including GPS navigation, satellite radio, and WiMAX-enabled dashtop mobile payment platforms[fixed on dashboards]

The battery life and safety issues will perhaps combine to eventually push mobile equipment?s inroads into vehicle dashtops. However, satellite-based GPS navigation and satellite radio may already hit a snag because of their part-time usage and technological hierarchy. Put differently, people want more functions than GPS navigation and satellite radios. The trend indicates an ongoing convergence into all-in-one dashtop mobile devices incorporating GPS navigators, satellite radios, MP3 players, mobile TV, mobile Internet, MVDER (vehicle black box), driving safety monitors, smartphones and even video games.

New American Chemical Society podcast

WASHINGTON, July 25, 2012 The latest episode in the American Chemical Society's (ACS') award-winning Global Challenges/Chemistry Solutions podcast series describes a process that could pave the way for a new genre of electric power-generating stations. These stations could supply electricity for more than a half billion people by tapping just one-tenth of the global potential of a little-known energy source that exists where rivers flow into the ocean.

Based on a report by Menachem Elimelech, Ph.D., and Ngai Yin Yip in the ACS journal Environmental Science & Technology, the new podcast is available without charge at iTunes and from www.acs.org/globalchallenges.

In the report, Elimelech and Yip explain that the little-known process, called pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO), exploits the difference in saltiness between freshwater and seawater. PRO requires no fuel, is sustainable and releases no carbon dioxide (the main greenhouse gas).

In PRO, freshwater flows naturally through a special membrane to dilute seawater on the other side. The pressure from the flow spins a turbine generator and produces electricity. The world's first PRO prototype power plant was inaugurated in Norway in 2009. With PRO appearing to have great potential, the scientists set out to make better calculations on how much it actually could contribute to future energy needs under real-world conditions.

Elimelech and Yip concluded that PRO power-generating stations using just one-tenth of the global river water flow into the oceans could generate enough power to meet the electricity needs of 520 million people, without emitting carbon dioxide. The same amount of electricity, if produced by a coal-fired power plant, would release more than 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases every year.

House GOP set to pass latest anti-regulation bill | Long Island ...

House Republicans are set to pass a bill that would freeze major government regulations until the unemployment rate drops to 6 percent ? it?s now 8.2 percent..

The latest GOP attempt to rein in Obama administration rulemaking is virtually certain to die in the Democratic Senate.

Republicans lawmakers are making the same kind of arguments as they did in earlier anti-regulation bills. They say unelected bureaucrats are preventing hiring and are hurting small businesses.

Democrats say the legislation would harm consumer protection, health care, aid to veterans, food safety and workplace safety rules.

The measure would affect proposed rules across the board. Its scope rivals that of a Republican bill passed last December that would give Congress the power to approve any major regulation from the executive branch.

More worries for the wealthy? Inheritance tax to jump unless Congress acts

The federal inheritance tax rate will jump to 55 percent in 2013 unless Congress acts. ?Republicans and Democrats disagree on the best plan. ?But a stalemate will result in higher inheritance taxes than either party wants.

By Ron Scherer,?Staff writer / July 26, 2012

The way Congressional Republicans see it, farmers will have to sell their land and small businesses will have to put their firms on the auction block if nothing is done to prevent the inheritance tax from rising next year.

Their solution: completely end what they call ?the death tax.?

But, on the other side of the aisle, Congressional Democrats view eliminating the tax as yet another gift to the ultra-wealthy. Under President Obama?s plan, the rate would actually rise from current levels.

Unless the two sides can find a common ground, the estate tax will rise far higher than either party's proposal. The change in estate tax rates is one of several tax law changes slated to occur in January, when the Bush era income tax cuts will expire.?

Currently, the inheritance tax is 35 percent with a $5 million exemption per estate. On January 1, the rate jumps to 55 percent with a $1 million exemption.

According to Republicans, citing the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation, this would increase the number of estates that would pay the tax from 3,600 to 55,200.

?Remember, Americans work all their life paying income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes?only to have the government raid their farms, ranches and small businesses when they pass away,? said Utah?s Sen. Orin Hatch (R), the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee in a statement.

President Obama has proposed moving the top rate to 45 percent with an exemption of $3.5 million per estate. That would be same formula that was in effect in 2009.

However, analysts who follow the issue say not all Democrats support Obama. ?The Democrats are all over the map,? says Pete Davis of Davis Capital Investment Ideas, which supplies Washington intelligence to Wall Street firms. ?Some are silent or in favor the Republican position, some Democrats would like to see a lower rate,? he says.
