County property tax rates might fall very slightly after a public hearing, to be held next Tuesday at the Jasper County Courthouse in Carthage. Jasper County Auditor Richard Webster said the county?s tax rate will be reduced to 9.93 cents per $100 of assessed valuation this year from 10.54 cents last year. Property taxes for the road districts will be reduced to 20.33 cents this year year cents to 20.54 cents last year. this will happen next Tuesday if the Jasper County Commissioners approves his calculations after a public hearing, slated for 9 a.m. Tuesday in the county commissioners' office at the Courthouse in Carthage. Tax rates generally fall when property values rise, according to the Hancock Amendment to the Missouri Constitution, which requires property tax rates to be adjusted as property values change to prevent governments from receiving more or less revenue based on dramatic changes in property values. County Auditor Richard Webster said Jasper County?s property tax rates rose slightly despite the massive damage to property in Joplin from the May 22 tornado. County Assessor Connie Hoover said a large part of the rise in property values came when she and her staff corrected a computer error in the way commercial property was valued going back to 2006. ?There was an error and commercial properties dropped dramatically and we didn?t catch the problem until late 2009,? said assistant County Assessor Lisa Perry. ?It would have remained the same for 07 and 08. we didn?t catch that there was an error until late 2009 and we couldn?t do anything about it until 2011.? Hoover said the error stemmed from the assessor?s office converting from one computerized assessing system to another. ?I don?t want to blame the system again, but that?s what happened,? Hoover said. ?It was a conversion error in the new system.? Webster said the new rate means a small dip in the property taxes an individual pays to the county.
