Bagged Salad Recalled Over Listeria ... - Food and Drink Digital

When it comes to food-borne pathogens, Listeria is a particularly nasty breed. While it lacks the household-name star power of E. coli and Salmonella, it more than makes up for that with virulence ? just last year, the pathogen?s presence in cantaloupe led to 25 deaths and more than a hundred others left ill. It still manages to rear its ugly head from time to time, and here we are again. This week Salinas, CA-based River Ranch Fresh Foods has expanded a recall on lettuce bagged for retail and foodservice use, due to potential infection after Listeria monocytogenes popped up during a sample test.

?According to a press release issued by River Ranch and distributed via the FDA, the bagged salads under recall were labeled under the following brand names for consumer retail:

• River Ranch
• Farm Stand
• Hy-Vee
• Shurfresh
• The Farmer?s Market

Salads bagged for use in the foodservice industry, on the other hand, were packaged under these brand names:

In both cases, the bagged salads are said to feature ?Best By? code dates that range between 12MAY2012 and 29MAY2012 or Julian dates between 118 and 125. The products involved in the recall cut a wide swath in terms of variety, ranging from shredded iceberg lettuce bags to coleslaw and Caesar Salad kits. The FDA has provided an in-depth list of individual products under recall.

So far no illnesses have been reported in connection with the Listeria contamination, and River Ranch hopes to keep it that way by urging consumers to return suspect bagged salads to their original place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions are further encouraged to contact River Ranch at their 24-hour customer service center at 1-888-624-2569.
