FRANCE: California foie gras ban prompts French call for California wine expulsion

A politician in France has called on retailers and restaurants in the country to stop offering Californian wines to their customers.

The call to arms follows California's ban on the production and consumption of foie gras in the state from 1 July. A law passed in the US state in 2004 declared that the act of gavage - the force feeding of corn to geese and ducks - was harmful to the animals' well-being.

It gave breeders seven years to find an alternative production method.

Philippe Martin, the head of the Gers Council in south-west France, the heart of foie gras-producing country, said that his proposed ban on Californian wines should last until the state withdraws the law prohibiting the producer.

How to plan a debt-free vacation

When you're on a budget, planning a vacation may seem like an unnecessary luxury. But studies show that taking a break from work and everyday life stressors is good for both physical and mental well-being. Vacations are rejuvenating. They also promote and strengthen family bonds. With some foresight and a little planning, you can enjoy your break without worrying about breaking the bank. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

1. Start saving.

You don't have to know where you're going in order to start socking away money to get you there. Take a look at your budget and figure out how much money per month you can afford to set aside in a vacation fund. Stash as little as $100 a month, and you'll have $1,200 to spend on next year's getaway.?

2. Pick a destination.

Don't rush to zero in on an exact location. In fact, flexibility can be a money-saving friend. Determine the type of vacation your family has in mind -- tropical, historic, outdoorsy or a mix -- and make a list of potential vacation spots.

3. Go off-season.

You can save up to 50 percent or more on peak season prices by traveling when tourist traffic is at its lowest because hotels, restaurants and stores are more eager for your business.

4. Watch for deals.

Once you have a general idea of where you'd like to go, sign up for travel discount and deal sites such as Groupon Getaways, Living Social Escapes and TravelZoo. But don't let the bargains blind you: always read the fine print regarding extra fees, blackout dates, expirations and other terms.

5. Be alert.

Sign up for email alerts from airlines and rental car companies so you'll be in-the-know when they offer special deals. Travelocity's free FareWatcher service tracks roundtrip air fares for multiple destinations and notifies you of price changes. Other sites, including Kayak and Expedia, can help you find the lowest prices on airfare, rental cars and hotels.

6. Save money on meals.

If you're traveling by car or renting one, and you have access to a fridge or cooler, you can stock up on grab-and-go foods for breakfast and lunch (think yogurt, sandwich fixings). Another idea is to "switch" lunch and dinner. Because lunches are often less expensive than dinners, make lunch your main dining-out experience, and eat breakfast and dinner in your lodging, or outside as a picnic if weather cooperates. Once you know your destination, scope out nearby restaurants online to find ones with budget-friendly options.???

7. Join an auto/travel club.

Despite the membership fee for organizations such as AAA, you'll still save money thanks to discounted pricing at hotels, restaurants, car rental agencies and more. The membership may also come in handy if you have car problems while traveling to your destination.

8. Rent a home.

Save money on lodging costs by renting a vacation home or condo, or seek out a resort hotel that also offers units with kitchens. Or consider traveling with friends or extended family -- and split the rental cost.?

9. Pile up the points.

Check your credit card to see if it offers any award points you can use toward travel expenses. You may also consider opening a new credit card account if your credit is good, as some airlines offer free roundtrip tickets when you open an account and make a purchase. However, these cards can carry hefty interest rates, and unless you are extremely disciplined, having more than one credit card can create problems. If you go this way, make sure to charge only what you can pay off in full each month, and never charge anything that you wouldn't otherwise buy just to earn points.?

10. Plan a staycation.

A faraway destination might not be in your budget this year, but you can still get away from it all without leaving home. Make a list of places and activities in your area that you've been wanting to check out. Think about amusement parks, museums, theater shows, zoos, water parks, festivals and family fun centers like bowling alleys, go-kart racing and miniature golf. Some public libraries offer free passes to museums.

Remember, your goal while on vacation should be to relax and enjoy yourself. You can't do that if you're constantly fretting about what everything costs. Worse, you don't want to return from vacation and cringe when the credit card bills roll in. Budget and plan wisely now so you can enjoy your R&R without going into debt.

Tolu Ogunlesi: His Name Is Aliko Dangote

A decade ago most people outside Nigeria would have said, "Aliko who?"

Not anymore. In 2008 he became the first Nigerian to make it onto Forbes' rich list. In 2011 the magazine disclosed: "The Nigerian businessman's fortune surged 557 percent in the past year, making him the world's biggest gainer in percentage terms and Africa's richest individual for the first time." (According to Forbes, as of March 2012 he was the second richest black man in the world, having recently been displaced by Saudi/Ethiopian Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi)

Now everyone else is paying attention.

Let's start with the fascinating detail in this new biography (it is unclear how many others exist out there) by Chicago-based Nigerian journalist Moshood Fayemiwo and his American partner Margie Neal -- the "stuff I bet you didn't know about Aliko" bit.

Islam permits him to be polygamous, but he is a serial monogamist -- by choice. He has been married to four women, and has sired fifteen children. His first wife, to whom he got married on May 27, 1977 -- he was 20 years old -- was "specially chosen for him by a consensus of his mother and other uncles."

Around that same time he left Kano, where he was born, and where his maternal family is one of the richest and most prominent, for Lagos, then Nigeria's Federal Capital, and seat of government.

He has been heartbroken. His attempt to marry a daughter of former President Yar'Adua failed -- she turned him down, and then went on to marry a state Governor. Since 1983 he has experienced three "near-fatal" plane accidents. A younger brother died in the plane crash that killed the son of Nigeria's Head of State, Sani Abacha, in 1996.

He is perhaps the only super-rich Nigerian alive today to come from a super-rich family -- his maternal great-grandfather was the richest man in West Africa in the 1900s (the book quotes an editor of West Africa magazine as referring to Alhassan Dantata, in 1955, as "possibly the richest man of any race in the whole of West Africa, and was in himself, a living rebuttal of the allegation that Africans, as a race, have no commercial aptitude, an example to his fellow -- countrymen of what a man can rise to even without education and a wealthy background").
A decade later maternal grandfather Sanusi Dantata was listed, by Time magazine, amongst Nigeria's richest persons. In a country where even the most lavish wealth typically will not outlast the creator-generation, the Dantata clan has proved remarkably odds-defying.

Yet from this biography it is clear that Aliko's story is not really about patrimony. While there is no doubt that he started out from a significantly privileged position (a substantial start-up loan from grandfather Sanusi, which he says he paid back within months), it is also clear that success -- his cement company alone accounts for a third of the value of the Nigerian stock market -- is more about innate genius than familial privilege.

Because it is not an authorised biography, there is much that is missing. "We were in Nigeria and Africa for fourteen months working on the Aliko biography," the authors write. "We reached out to some of his aides to get Aliko to sit down for an interview for this book but were unsuccessful."

All the quotes used in the book come from "his interviews with local and world media." A reader expecting to encounter compelling anecdotes -- the sort of storytelling that illuminates the lives of characters like Aliko -- will therefore come away disappointed. The authors do not seem interested in cultivating any direct sources, and so we get virtually no opinions about Dangote from schoolmates, childhood friends, ex-lovers or business partners.

There are also the puzzling bits that the authors fail to pursue. There's no effort to account for or explain what the reader would perceive as Aliko's precociousness -- by 1977, according to the book, the 20-year-old Dangote had been to University in Egypt, earned his first degree, and completed his national service.

The strength of Dangote lies in its exploration of the forces, attitudes and circumstances that shaped and still shape Dangote's life and business -- everything from the influence of his maternal grandfather to his city of birth (Kano, commercial capital of Northern Nigeria) to his absolute devotion to Islam. These and more explain his remarkable business acumen, his much-criticised closeness to Nigeria's successive governments, his unwavering belief in the economic potentials of Nigeria, and his philanthropic spirit.

From Dangote we see that Aliko's life is a careful balancing game, in a country where 'politics' -- by every definition of it -- is more than everything. On the one hand is the family philosophy, established by forebear Sanusi Dantata. Aliko is quoted as saying, of his grandfather: "He always advises us that: no matter what you do, you must always respect the authority of the day. Do not fight government. You must be an obedient person. And that's something I learnt and took seriously."

This "obedience" exists in tension with an obsession with the quality of political leadership in the country -- driven, no doubt, by an instinct for self-preservation: "... if bad and inexperienced politicians control power in Nigeria, my wealth may turn into poverty and I am not ready to become a poor man."

Dangote is as much a biography of Aliko's forebears as it is of Aliko himself. Readers unfamiliar with Nigeria will also learn a lot about the country's turbulent political and economic history -- clearly the story of the billionaire and his country are inextricably intertwined.

The authors make copious attempts -- sometimes overdoing it -- to draw parallels between Aliko and other wealthy and influential persons from around the world, especially America, as though to convince the fact that Nigeria finally has a mogul who can be written about alongside the best-known on the planet.

Chapter 14 -- 'What is next... ' -- reminds us that it is morning still in the Dangote Universe, and that the billionaire's mission is simple: to conquer Africa and the world with the Dangote brand.

Dangote is a commendable start. In a land lacking a culture of independent biography, this is a starting point, and Dangote -- part unauthorised biography, part history book, and part success-manual -- is a promising introduction to the fascinating and still largely unmapped universe of one of the world's richest men.

It started at Glover's the Clothier when I went to get my Boy Scout uniform. He would measure my inseam and pretend to measure "accurately." It was 1962.

In summer school, there were tickle sessions and wrestling matches on the old sofa from the teacher's lounge placed in the main hallway while the floor was being varnished. Just an innocent grope. Playing dirty.

Then as Team Announcer, it was normal for him to be around the boys locker room, and to come into coach's office and watch while being treated for a really bad case of jock rash. One time another coach showered with us but we knew he had a hot girlfriend and was having sex in her convertible.

There was lots of premarital sex going on with the upperclassmen because Vietnam was raging. So many teenage girls were getting pregnant and marrying as an honorable draft deferment. Sex was in the air. Six packs and country roads make babies.

You could drive at 15 ? with a learner's permit. Mom and Dad worked all the time.

High School classes competed to gather the most soap bars to send to Vietnam. There was another competition that didn't cost postage to box and send stuff overseas. It was called Pennies Positive Nickels Negative. There were four jars outside the Principal's Office labeled for each class. The goal was to sabotage another class with Nickels (or Dimes and Quarters) while putting Pennies in your own class's jar. It was a huge success and really harnessed the glee in "penalizing" other classes with nickels (lunch money) while forging full speed ahead with bags of pennies for ones own class.

I was asked by him to help count the money after school. We would sit side by side with piles of coins to be wrapped and counted. The table covered our laps. He unzipped and put my hand on his erect penis. I kept moving my hand away. He kept putting it back.

At 14, you feel like you are an adult and in control of what happens to you and what doesn't. You are always horny. You already have a girlfriend and you know how to slow dance because of dance lessons in the seventh grade. Inspired by older kids talking about how they lost their virginity helped feed the imagination of those who hadn't, whether it is true or not. All you needed was a car.

You might have practiced on your mother's bra in the laundry basket, but that is another story.

Each new revelation of child sexual abuse can cause one to relive and re-experience ones own trauma even 40 years later. No one gets over anything. Whether it is a priest or a teacher, a trusted relative or family friend, each event is unique, and damage done over so-called "man lessons" (Sandusky). One issue may be that the predator doesn't understand or appreciate the consequences of their criminal actions. They are always "helping" the child.

So many stories, so many examples of abuse and how he did it and continued to do it.

Start your own charity as a "front" to help troubled and ignored young boys, get married and distract your wife with multiple foster kids, make travel and gifts normal, yet special for the intended special chosen one.

Jerry Sandusky's kids were subjected to Jerry's methods that the world simply doesn't understand. To teach penetration, penetrate. To show how to come, demonstrate. Soap, rinse and repeat. Make the dirty little secrets cleaner. And threaten. Your Dad will lose his job at the university and your family will lose their home and starve. No remorse for Jerry, after all, his methods worked! Until they didn't.

My Dad had a very bad temper and I think would have killed him if he had known.

That year, I missed 30 days out of school out of 180 and did everything I could to get attention even while not aware of the underlying motivation, the emotional pain that surfaced in chronic tardiness for marching band in the morning, to sinus infections in my sinus infections. The day I was to be admitted to the National Honor Society, the principal withdrew my name and initiated a "better behaved" student. The same for the American Legion's Boy State. Did he have any awareness or training on how to deal with a sexual predator on the high school faculty?

I took all that anger to college and excelled, in part, to get my parents to notice me. Thanks, therapist(s)! Then, on to Yale Divinity School, where closeted faculty sought disciples to share sacred intimacy. No need for sex ed in seminary. Liberation theology and the Living Theatre taught us to shed our modesty and our clothes. If it feels good, do it, until you remember that it didn't. To be so intelligent and so stupid. To help others as a distraction for not taking care of oneself. What's past is past until it resurfaces again and again. After the Age of Aquarius and before the Age of Consent, with the Vietnam War going on, King and Kennedy being assassinated, and a world gone crazy, whom could I tell? Who could I talk to? After all, I thought I had been an equal participant. My shame was my own. It was 1968.

When Dad died, he was in the VFW's Honor Guard holding a rifle across the edge of the cemetery. I had kept the secret. I imagined him shooting me even as I knew they were blanks. I worked to keep focus on remembering and treasuring my Dad and all of his sacrifices, and helping my young nephew put his teddy bear next to his grandfather in the coffin. It was 1989.

Back at my 40th high school reunion, I reconnected with my old classmates and my old rock band reunited and played great therapeutic rock and roll. I was able to directly ask my classmate why he had been so mean to me and discovered he had been abused by the same teacher. I thought I was the only one. Even after 40 years, it was so good to talk. It was 2008.

Thank you Pennsylvania jurors for making the right call. Even today, it's standard of practice for the defense to blame the victim for the crime. The college town has been educated and the crime prosecuted. Jerry still doesn't think he did anything wrong.

There are thousands out there who have come forward and will come forward but only when they are ready, their memory triggered, the pain re-surfaces and is too much to carry and own in 2012. And forgiveness without justice may not be forgiveness. He is dead but his crimes live on. I will not carry him anymore. I will not keep his crimes secret.

Which musician has (or had) the greatest hair? Was it Elvis? slick pompadour? George Clinton?s rainbow extensions? Justin Bieber?s modern moptop?

Depending on when you grew up, you may have been reprimanded by your World War II vet dad for growing out your hair like The Beatles, or for shaving stripes into the sides like Vanilla Ice. Even if you didn't experiment with your own locks, you surely knew what Jules was talking about in "Pulp Fiction" when he called one of the guys in the Big Kahuna burger scene "Flock of Seagulls."

Country artists sported memorable hairdos, too. Has anyone ever pulled off long, long hair better than Crystal Gayle, or managed the braids-on-a-guy look like Willie Nelson?
