Unusual cases reveal that the famous "five senses" are not as distinct as once thought

In Brief

  1. Individuals with brain damage can expose?or develop?unusual perceptual abilities that provide clues for how we all detect the world around us.
  2. Recent studies reveal that human sensory systems are much more interconnected than previously thought.
  3. Healthy people, too, may possess less developed multisensory skills, including basic echolocation and a rudimentary form of synesthesia.

For as long as he can remember, Bryan Alvarez has thought his mother resembled a Mark Rothko painting. The likeness is not just a metaphor he conjured up one day. Whenever he conceives of her name, Marla, he literally sees, in his mind?s eye, blocks of colors, each one blending into the next?grainy, brick red for the M, bright, blood red for the A, eggplant purple for the R, plum purple for the L and red again for the final A.

Is it really easy to hack NASA computers?

A NASA official recently stated that a stolen laptop contained algorithms used to control the International Space Station. This incident is one of many breaches of NASA's security that have occurred over the past two years.

Speaking before Congress on Wednesday, NASA's Inspector General admitted that an unencrypted laptop that was stolen last year contained codes for controlling the International Space Station.

This isn't the first report of a NASA device, such as a cell phone or a laptop, being compromised. Between 2009 and 2011 the agency reported the loss or theft of 48 devices, some of which housed personal employee information along with proprietary technical details and important financial data.

Yet this is only a small part of a much larger problem that has been troubling NASA for the past two years.

Last week, the investigative panel of House Committee on Science, Space and Technology held a hearing to examine NASA's exposure to cyberattacks and information theft. In a written statement to the committee, NASA's Inspector General, Paul K. Martin, told the panel that between 2010 and 2011, "NASA reported 5,408 computer security incidents that resulted in the installation of malicious software on or unauthorized access to its systems."

It's difficult to measure NASA's data security problems against those of other federal agencies. "NASA OIG is the only Office of Inspector General that regularly conducts international network intrusion cases," read Martin's statement. "[T]his fact could skew perceptions with regard to NASA?s relative rate of significant intrusion events compared to other agencies."

NASA is taking steps to guard its data, a task that is not proving easy. Perhaps the most fundamental impediment to NASA's security upgrade is the sheer size of the agency. Information in NASA is constantly cycling around 550 individual networks that span the globe. Hundreds of thousands of people, including NASA personnel, contractors, academics, and members of the public access and communicate through these networks.

NASA spends over $1.5 billion on information technology each year, $58 million of which is allotted for security.

The official charged with overseeing the activity of these networks ? Chief Information Officer Linda Y. Curteon ? lacks access to key information about it. What's worse, when the CIO does identify a problem, she does not always have the proper authority to deal with it.

NASA currently monitors its networks with a "snap-shot" model, where updates on security are only given every so often, much like a baby monitor that broadcasts only for a few minutes each hour. The time between updates is a window of opportunity for potential hackers. For years, NASA has been trying to adopt a continuous security model.

The loss or theft of NASA's mobile devices would not be such a threat to security if the agency knew what sensitive information was stored on them, and that the devices were encrypted. During the hearing, Martin stated that 99% of these devices were not.

These many problems have rendered NASA vulnerable to much more serious threats, such as large-scale, sophisticated cyber-attacks.

"The individuals or nations behind these attacks are typically well organized and well funded and often target high profile organizations like NASA," Martin said. There were 47 such attacks on NASA in 2011, 13 of which were successful. During one attack, intruders acquired the credentials of 150 employees who had access to NASA's systems. In another, attackers, operating from a Chinese-based IP address, gained access to key systems of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and high-profile user accounts. "In other words," said Martin, "the attackers had full functional control over these networks."

NASA's internal investigations have suggested that the sophistication of cyber-attacks is increasing. Some have even involved large foreign companies and underground internet-service providers. The recent spate of thefts and intrusions seems to demonstrate that online criminals have begun to see NASA's vulnerabilities as opportunities.

GOP prez candidates facing unexpected headwinds

(AP) ? It's not a happy time for Republicans seeking the White House.

On the eve of key Super Tuesday contests, they find themselves on the defensive over birth control, embarrassed by conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and tripped up by subjects bearing little relation to the day-to-day concerns of Americans. All the while, President Barack Obama's ratings are climbing.

There's still a long way ahead, for sure, but this isn't how GOP leaders had pictured things.

Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment about saying no evil about a fellow Republican is in shreds in what's become a scorched-earth primary contest.

Contenders for the GOP nomination are trying to win the White House with a gloomy economic message, while Obama seeks to project reassuring optimism amid fresh signs of a growing ? if still fragile ? economy.

Some GOP pundits seem to be already bracing for an Obama re-election victory, even though Election Day is still eight months off.

Conservative columnist George Will has raised the specter of a repeat of the 1964 race, when "conservatives got their way" and the GOP chose Barry Goldwater as its nominee. He lost in a landslide to incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson.

In a weekend column, Will wrote that neither Mitt Romney nor Rick Santorum ? the two leading GOP contenders ? "seems likely to be elected." Instead, he suggests that conservatives focus more energy on retaking control of the Senate and retaining the GOP majority in the House.

Peggy Noonan, a speechwriter for Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, recently wrote that "the Republican nominee will emerge so bloodied his victory will hardly be worth having; the Republicans are delving into areas so extreme and so off point that by the end Mr. Obama will look like the moderate."

Veteran GOP consultant Charles Black, a top political aide to Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign and now a Romney backer, said current GOP expressions of frustration are standard fare for when "a competitive primary race is going, when the negatives for your candidate are being highlighted, and when the other party's nominee is getting a free ride."

"For anybody on any side to throw in the towel now, they're going against both data and history," Black said.

Super Tuesday, when 10 states vote, could scramble the deck again, but for now Romney and Santorum are running far ahead of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and libertarian Rep. Ron Paul of Texas ? both in poll ratings and in the battle for delegates to the national GOP convention. There also is growing consensus among Republican insiders that Romney eventually will prevail and clinch the nomination.

A new poll released Monday by the Pew Research Center suggested the brutal GOP nomination battle is helping Obama solidify support among Democrats. The survey found 49 percent of Democrats say that as they learn more about the GOP candidates, their impression of Obama is getting better ? up from 36 percent in December. Just 26 percent of Republicans say their impression of the GOP field has improved as they have learned more about the candidates, largely unchanged since December.

Obama's GOP rivals have hit many potholes in this contest.

Santorum got tripped up by suggesting that John F. Kennedy's 1960 speech in Houston on the separation of church and state makes him want to "throw up," and for making birth control a central campaign issue when polls show most Americans are more concerned about issues like the economy and jobs.

And Romney, who many Republicans view as too moderate, keeps putting his foot in his mouth by saying things that unintentionally point to his enormous personal wealth and suggest that his world is vastly different from that of ordinary Americans, especially when he talks about money and cars.

Added to all this was Limbaugh's recent branding of a Georgetown University law school student as a "slut" and "a prostitute" for publicly advocating mandatory contraceptive insurance coverage for women. With advertisers fleeing, Limbaugh issued a public apology over the weekend. He apologized again, on the air, on Monday.

Despite the apology, widespread outrage for the remarks remained, and sent GOP leaders scrambling to insist that Limbaugh was an "entertainer" ? and not a GOP official or leader, as Democrats take glee in implying.

It was just one more headache Republicans certainly didn't need.

"People may be disappointed in the fact that Romney didn't put this together sooner," said GOP consultant Rich Galen. But, he added, it's only the first week of March.

Galen, who once worked as a Gingrich aide but is on the sidelines in the presidential race, suggested that current GOP anxiety "is expressing itself now, but once we settle on a nominee, I think we'll get back in line."

As to Reagan's 11th Commandment that Republican candidates not speak badly of one another? It certainly isn't in effect this election cycle.

But then it wasn't in most of the previous Republican primary seasons, either. In fact Reagan quickly broke it himself when he blasted incumbent President Gerald Ford in 1976 for moving to give the Panama Canal to Panama. Almost every GOP primary since then has seen harsh words spoken by GOP rivals about another.

Doug Schoen, a Democratic pollster who worked for President Bill Clinton, said Santorum and Romney "have both failed to talk about the bread-and-butter issues that affect the American people."

Still, Schoen said Obama's team shouldn't breathe easy just yet ? since recent polls show the president holds a narrow single-digit lead over Romney as the prospective GOP nominee. Schoen also said some polls suggest "that a majority of Americans, a narrow majority, would like to see another president."

Suu Kyi's unthinkable leap from icon to parliament

(AP) ? On Yangon's teeming streets, 2012 is the year of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Her once-banished image now appears everywhere, on T-shirts, keychains and coffee mugs. Pirated copies of "The Lady" ? the big screen version of Suu Kyi's life ? are the best-selling DVD. And in this devoutly Buddhist country, calendars with Suu Kyi's pictures are now outselling even the Lord Buddha.

In just over a year since her release from house arrest, the 66-year-old opposition leader has made the once unthinkable leap into Myanmar's mainstream, transforming from political prisoner to political campaigner. Now she's trying to take another big step: from icon to elected official.

For many people who put their dreams on hold during decades of military rule, Suu Kyi is seen as a savior and the solution to the country's problems ? creating expectations that even she warns can't be met anytime soon.

If the pro-democracy icon wins the April 1 vote, she will become a junior and minority member of parliament, meaning that Suu Kyi's greatest challenge would be her lack of power to make any real change, at least for the foreseeable future.

"The road ahead is rough and tough. Democracy is hard to achieve," Suu Kyi told a massive crowd last weekend in the city of Mandalay, where more than 100,000 people packed the streets to see her.

Swarmed by a sea of humanity at campaign outings, Suu Kyi has warned that she is not "a wizard" and can't magically introduce her dreams of democracy, peace and more freedom. She tells the crowds she cannot make any campaign promises.

But her appearance upstages her words. In response the crowd screams: "We love you Mother Suu!" ? a name she is affectionately called even by elders because she has the image of having mothered the country through its dark, difficult times.

"Her presence is electrifying. It's not just a Nelson Mandela, a Gandhi, an Obama but it has an element of Marilyn Monroe and a rock star," said Maung Zarni, a Myanmar expert and a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics. "But can her ability to mobilize public support be translated into concrete change? I doubt it."

As the dignified, determined Nobel Peace laureate travels the country campaigning for a seat in parliament, there is a sense of euphoria in Myanmar. The pace of change has been frenetic since a nominally civilian government took office a year ago, releasing hundreds of political prisoners, relaxing media censorship, approving Suu Kyi's candidacy and allowing massive crowds at her campaign rallies. What might normally be a little by-election ? to fill one-tenth of the seats in parliament ? has taken on enormous significance.

A victory for Suu Kyi would be highly symbolic. It would anoint her with an elected office and a voice in government for the first time in her quarter century as Myanmar's opposition leader.

Even if Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy opposition party win all 48 seats up for grabs they would only have a small minority. The military is guaranteed 25 percent of seats in the 440-seat lower house and the remainder is dominated by the main pro-military party.

"Parliament is not about 60 million people behind Suu Kyi. It's about who has the largest number of seats in Parliament," Zarni said.

Critics say this would put Suu Kyi right where the government wants her: On a pedestal, as poster child for "the new Myanmar" but politically neutralized.

There remains great skepticism about the sincerity of the new government and Suu Kyi herself has called for cautious optimism, saying recently that "ultimate power still rests with the army ... we cannot say that we have got to a point where there will be no danger of a U-turn."

Of all the disorienting changes, Suu Kyi's public prominence is perhaps the most vivid.

Every morning in Yangon, people crowd into the headquarters of her National League for Democracy party, a rundown two-story house that has become part-Suu Kyi souvenir shop and part-spiritual Mecca for her supporters.

"She is the person who can make my dreams come true," said 41-year-old Koko Lwin, a poor man in disheveled clothes who took a 10-hour bus ride from central Myanmar, went straight to the party headquarters and bought a Suu Kyi T-shirt. "She can make this country good. She can give me a good life."

Sales are helping to fund the party's campaign.

At a recent art show in Mandalay, organizers sold about 10 million kyat ($12,500) in artwork and 20 million kyat ($25,000) worth of Suu Kyi T-shirts, key chains and calendars, said Win Tin, a former journalist and poet who helped found Suu Kyi's party in 1988 and then spent 19 years as a political prisoner. As he entered the party headquarters, supporters filmed him with cell phones.

"Ten months ago, nobody would have worn a Daw Suu Kyi T-shirt," said Win Tin. Daw is a term of respect. "People are getting bolder, and not only in support of Daw Suu and the National League for Democracy. But against the government."

Vendors on Yangon's busiest streets say no T-shirt, DVD or calendar is selling better these days than those featuring Suu Kyi.

"Even pretty actresses and Buddha can't compete with Suu Kyi this year," said U Myint, a vendor on a street lined with stalls selling calendars.

"The Lady" starring Michelle Yeoh hasn't yet been released in the U.S. but it's a huge hit here, chuckles Cho Gyi, 25, who sells pirated movies near Sule Pagoda where soldiers gunned down Buddhist monks and other anti-junta protesters in 2007. He wears a Suu Kyi pendant around his neck. "To me, she's like a mother. I love her."

For years, the former military junta tried to make the people forget Suu Kyi. They locked her in her lakeside villa and closed her upscale Yangon street to traffic. They padlocked her opposition party's offices and banned her picture from newspapers. People dared not utter her name in public, referring only in hushed tones to "The Lady."

Some have described Suu Kyi as an accidental leader, but many in Myanmar see her as part of a national narrative.

Suu Kyi is the daughter of the country's independence hero, Gen. Aung San, who was assassinated by rivals when she was just 2.

In 1988 at the age of 43, Suu Kyi returned to her homeland after two decades abroad to nurse her dying mother just as an uprising erupted against the military regime. She was thrust into the forefront of the pro-democracy movement.

A gifted orator with steely grace and charisma, she inherited her father's fortitude. Her ability to capture the hearts of the Burmese people was why the junta locked her up after brutally crushing the 1988 protests. She stayed under house arrest for 15 of the next 23 years.

Some observers fear Myanmar's people will be disappointed in the new parliament when it fails to quickly deliver on their expectations. After years of isolation, Myanmar needs a top-to-bottom overhaul of its economy, education, health and banking systems and a plan to unify the country's ethnic groups after years of guerrilla warfare with the junta.

But that disappointment is unlikely to dim Suu Kyi's star among the Burmese people, analysts say.

"They identify her with democracy and freedom and with resistance, and they will continue to do that whether she manages to get into parliament, become prime minister, or not," said Monique Skidmore, a Myanmar expert at the University of Canberra.

Zarni agrees: "If nothing concrete can be delivered in the next two to five years, the public will fault the regime. She can do no wrong."

Nonetheless, there are fears of what the future holds for Suu Kyi.

On a recent evening in Yangon, a group of former political prisoners gathered near the country's gold-domed Shwedagon Pagoda ? without a police officer in sight. They wondered about the prospects of a country that has wrapped its hopes and dreams around one person.

"What we all expect is full democracy and true human rights. This will take a long time," said Aung Tun, 49, who spent a decade in prison for writing a book about student activism.

"During that time, I am concerned that somebody who is impatient with the slow pace of change might take action and assassinate Daw Suu just like Mohandas Gandhi," he said, drawing grim nods from the group.

"At the moment, there is no one who could replace her."

Are Single Mothers Under Attack - Again? | Black and Married With ...

Wisconsin Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) introduced a poorly worded bill that has set the internet on fire with its implication that the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board should more forcefully emphasize that single parenthood is a contributing factor of child abuse.

From the bill:

Section 1. 48.982 (2) (g) 2. of the statutes is amended to read:
48.982 (2) (g) 2. Promote statewide educational and public awareness campaigns and materials for the purpose of developing public awareness of the problems of child abuse and neglect.?In promoting those campaigns and materials, the board shall emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.

Section 2. 48.982 (2) (g) 4. of the statutes is amended to read:
48.982 (2) (g) 4. Disseminate information about the problems of and methods of preventing child abuse and neglect to the public and to organizations concerned with those problems.?In disseminating that information, the board shall emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.

Despite sensational headlines all over the internet,?I don?t think it?s necessarily this bill?that is causing all the uproar. It?s poorly worded, yes, and probably going to prove to be ineffective. More abuse happens in single parent homes?I?m sorry, ?nonmarital? families? Okay, fine. But what about those homes below the poverty line? Families dealing with substance abuse or mental health issues? These are all contributing factors as well, so where?s the emphasis on that?

But ?if you really want to get pissed about something, you must have missed?Sen. Grothman?s 2011 paper,??How The United States and The State of Wisconsin Are Working to Encourage Single Motherhood and Discouraging Children in 2-Parent Families.??In it, he details the amount of benefits that single mothers can receive by way of the government, which he then compares with how much they can ?gain? by getting married. I really beg you to read it in its entirety and let me see if your jaw doesn?t hit the floor. His recommendations? To restrict the type of food single moms can buy with food stamps (so they don?t buy ?better? food than married parents), have them undergo mandatory drug testing before receiving benefits, and restrict what Section 8 apartments single mothers can live in (so they don?t live in nicer homes than married parents). Is this guy for real? He is.

He writes at the end of the report:

?I realize the above is going to be criticized as?unnecessarily?harsh? If we do not address this situation, our country will not survive in the way we have come to know it. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE. It is also somewhat outrageous that some married couples feel they can only afford one or two children in part because they are paying excessive taxes to provide programs for someone else to have four or five children.?

I think I?m going to let Denene Millner say it best:

At this rate 100 arrogant bankers in New York have probably done more damage to American children of this generation than the whole lot of single moms put together, but I suspect that Mr. Wisconsin legislature is not trying to haul them off to the local jail.

Just a little food for thought today. Chew it, digest it and keep it in mind the next time your local elections come around. Stay home and the idiot next door will become the idiot in your state legislature?the one who will try to legally proclaim you?re a criminal because you had a baby but not a husband. Vote with YOUR BRAIN, and maybe we can keep these crazies out of office and get down to the real work of saving our country.

BMWK family ? let us know what you think.?
