New Year's shooting at condo leaves 4 dead

CORONADO, California (AP) ? An early morning New Year's shooting left four people dead at a condominium near San Diego, authorities said.

Police responded Sunday to an emergency call from a cellphone of shots fired in Coronado, a wealthy seaside suburb of about 24,000 people on San Diego Bay. Officers found a man in the doorway of the condo. The bodies of two men and a woman were discovered inside the condo.

Sheriff's Lt. Larry Nesbit said homicide investigators have not determined how any of the four died, though police officers who were the first to arrive believe the man found in the doorway was shot.

"They checked and he had no obvious signs of life. They tried to make contact with anyone else that might be inside the building and they got no response," Nesbit said.

A SWAT team sent in a robot to the first floor and later searched the second and third floors, Nesbit said. The three dead bodies were found in "different parts" of the three-story building.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service was on scene, "in case any of the victims were members of the military," Nesbit said. NCIS spokesman Ed Buice said its investigators were participating in the probe, which was being led by the Sheriff's Department.

The victims' identities hadn't been confirmed.

Asked if the deaths are believed to be a murder-suicide, Nesbit said, "I'll let it infer what it does. We're not going to say that. Although it's very early in the investigation, we don't believe there are any outstanding suspects."

Nesbit said the emergency call was placed by a male passer-by who heard gunshots. Authorities received a search warrant Sunday afternoon to enter the three-story condo, which remained cordoned off.

The condo sits a few blocks from the famed Hotel del Coronado and a block from the main street, which is lined with boutiques and restaurants.

Coronado is home to Naval Air Station North Island and is a haven for Navy retirees. Homicides are extremely rare in Coronado, which recorded one in 2010.

In Japan, silent camera apps open door for unsavory photos

TOKYO -- Cases of smartphone users secretly photographing unsuspecting targets have been on the rise, thanks to applications that silence the camera shutter sound. But there is no legal impediment to creating and selling these software programs, even as apps are tied to complaints of voyeurism.

Companies in the industry say the blame lies with people who misuse these applications rather than the programs themselves.

According to Japan's National Police Agency, 1,741 cases of illicit photography were reported in Japan last year, a 1.6-fold increase from 2006.

The largest number of snap-happy voyeurs was reported in Kanagawa Prefecture. "About 30 percent of cases involved the misuse of smartphone apps," a senior Kanagawa prefectural police investigator said.

The latest applications include "upgraded versions" that enable people to silently take photos while an email or website is displayed on the phone's screen to provide cover for the surreptitious picture-taking.

"We can't help but think these apps are designed specifically for taking sneaky photos," another senior prefectural police investigator said.

According to major cellphone carriers NTT Docomo, KDDI and SoftBank Mobile, smartphone cameras come equipped with a shutter sound. But one main feature of smartphones is that users can customize the settings -- including adjusting or neutralizing the shutter sound, according to the firms.

Takeda, an expert on information security, said some rules are needed for these apps.

"There are limits to legally regulating smartphones whose settings can easily be changed," Takeda said. "However, from a corporate ethics viewpoint, we shouldn't ignore the fact that they're being misused for crimes. We need to consider guidelines for screening and putting apps on the market."

Anonymous is upset at Sony for supporting the SOPA act, and is threatening to shut down its network again. The hacker group also threatened Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, and Taylor Swift.

This act will halt online businesses and restrict access to many sites for many users. Supporting SOPA is like trying to throw an entire company from off a bridge. HTC EVO Design 4G and Hero S kernel source released

HTC has released the kernel source for the EVO Design 4G, and its US Cellular cousin, the HTC Hero S. The specific version is 2.6.35 for Gingerbread, which is the current kernel running on the devices. Having kernel source opens up some ridiculously cool mods and hacks, and the development community should have plenty of fun with this. This means that we'll all be having fun shortly after.
