Hard-working Velasquez honored to represent Mexican people at UFC on Fox

Mexican pride has a deep history in the fight game, so it's no surprise that tomorrow's big UFC on Fox main event between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos is slowly turning developing into a Mexico vs. Brazil affair. It's no different than boxing where a large group of Mexican fans are backing Juan Manuel Marquez tomorrow night in his quest to finally get a win against Filipino Manny Pacquiao.

Mexicans love their fighting.

"I just represent hard-working people," Velasquez told the Orange County Register. "That's what my family is. That's what I've grown up around. I'm happy that the Mexicans are known as hard-working people. We live our life with a lot of heart. I try to use that in my fighting. I fight with a lot of heart, with a lot of blood. I'm always going forward. That's what it means to me."

UFC president Dana White says he understands why Mexicans and Mexican-Americans admire Velasquez.

"I don't think we're putting a lot of emphasis on the Hispanic community. He is Hispanic and the Hispanic community is (supporting him), but we're trying to reach everybody," White said. "Yeah, I think it's a big deal. When you think about it in the history of combat sports, this is the only heavyweight champion ever as far Mexican champions go. It's a big deal."

One fight nights Velasquez pays homage to his heritage with his walkout music.

The champion never wants to forget the sacrifice made by his parents.

"At first, I chose the song as my walk-out music to honor my father," Velasquez said. "My dad dreamed of coming to America and once he got here he worked so hard so I would have a better life.? Watching my parents work so hard every day and not complain, even though they were doing back-breaking jobs, I took that work ethic and applied it to my own life. The song is about places in Mexico that my dad actually crossed coming to the U.S."

Velasquez said he's heard the appreciation from Mexican fans.

"It is very special to me, but what's surprised me is other Mexican-Americans would come up to me and say 'I did the same thing' or 'my parents did that too,' so it has become a very meaningful song for me."

Japan financial chief confirms Olympus probe (AP)

TOKYO ? The minister in charge of Japan's financial regulator said Friday it will move quickly to investigate camera and medial equipment maker Olympus, which is embroiled in a scandal over the concealment of huge investment losses.

Financial Services Minister Shozaburo Jimi said the scandal had tainted Japan's image internationally, and his agency is "determined to move quickly."

Olympus, which has said it covered up investment losses that date to the 1990s, now risks being delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The scandal centers around $687 million in payments for financial advice and expensive acquisitions of companies unrelated to its mainstay businesses.

The fiasco came to light last month, when Chief Executive Michael Woodford, a Briton and a rare foreigner heading a major Japanese company, raised questions about the payments and called for executives to resign.

He was fired by the board on Oct. 14. At that time, Olympus said Woodford was too wayward and had not matched Olympus' ways.

Jimi said in a statement that he expects Olympus to carry out its own investigation and come clean.

Olympus has set up a panel to investigate. The panel said earlier this week that it found accounting irregularities and executives had hidden investment losses dating, reversing initial denials of wrongdoing.

But Jimi also stressed the government will act quickly to investigate possible violations.

Jimi said the investigation arm of the Financial Services Agency was ready to carry out "rigorous investigations and surveillance" on Olympus, and take necessary action.

"It is trouble to see investors, both domestic and abroad, question the fairness and transparency of the Japanese markets," he said, calling the Olympus cover-up "highly regrettable."

In recent weeks, analysts have expressed concern that Olympus will be seen by the international community as typical of Japan Inc., threatening to tarnish the image of an entire nation.

Others say the case highlights the weaknesses of Japan's system of corporate governance, which needs to be updated and beefed up by outside experts.

Olympus stock has erased about four-fifths of its value over the last month because of the scandal. It slipped nearly 5 percent to 460 yen Friday on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The exchange has warned Olympus will be delisted if it can't report earnings by Dec. 14.

Two pitching Triple Crowns, one offensive near-Triple Crown and the question of whether a pitcher should win an MVP award will come to the forefront next week, when the annual Baseball Writers Association of America begins announcing its awards. One opinion on the eight ballots:

National League MVP
1. Matt Kemp, Los Angeles; 2. Ryan Braun, Milwaukee; 3. Prince Fielder, Milwaukee; 4. Jose Reyes, New York; 5. Albert Pujols, St. Louis; 6. Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado; 7. Joey Votto, Cincinnati; 8. Justin Upton, Arizona; 9. Brandon Phillips, Cincinnati; 10. Lance Berkman, St. Louis

The hardware should be piling up for Kemp after winning NL home run and RBI titles and missing the batting title by 13 points and a 40-homer/40-steal season by only one home run. He's already won Silver Slugger and Gold Glove awards.

In very similar offensive seasons, Braun trailed Kemp by six homers, six runs scored and seven stolen bases, but topped the Dodgers slugger for the league lead in slugging percentage and OPS.

Fielder's power and presence were a huge part of the Brewers' run to the NLCS, and he admirably handled the potential controversy of playing his final season in Milwaukee.

Reyes picked the right time to stay healthy and put together a big season complete with a batting title, 16 triples and 39 steals. Now he'll get paid big in free agency.

The Cardinals' unexpected late run to the playoffs was fueled by Pujols' big finish. Tulowitzki's power and Gold Glove defense combination are unmatched at shortstop.

American League MVP
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, Boston; 2. Jose Bautista, Toronto; 3. Adrian Gonzalez, Boston; 4. Miguel Cabrera, Detroit; 5. Justin Verlander, Detroit; 6. Robinson Cano, New York; Detroit; 7. Curtis Granderson, New York; 8. Michael Young, Texas; 9. Dustin Pedroia, Boston; 10, Paul Konerko, Chicago

There have been years when a pitcher, even a closer, deservedly has won the MVP award. But those occurred when there wasn't a dominant offensive player, and that's not the case at all here.

In fact, the numbers of the AL's top four hitters are remarkable ? all good enough to win MVP honors in other seasons. So while Verlander will get his share of the MVP votes, and already has won one player-of-the-year award, he's not on top of this ballot.

The Red Sox's collapse could cost Ellsbury the MVP honor, but he already has won a Silver Slugger, a Gold Glove and a comeback player of the year award. He led the league with 364 total bases, batted .321 with 212 hits, stole 39 bases, hit 32 homers and drove in 105 runs. What more can a guy do?

Bautista's league leads in OPS, slugging percentage and walks were sizable, he finished at .302/43/105 and, oh by the way, is a plus defender at third base and right field.

The only significant difference between Gonzalez and Cabrera was the former's Gold Glove defense.

NL Cy Young Award
1. Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles; 2. Roy Halladay, Philadelphia; 3. Cliff Lee, Philadelphia

Kershaw's Triple Crown ? 21 wins, 2.28 ERA, 248 strikeouts ? makes this a relatively easy call, even though his margins of victory were slim. And that speaks to the great seasons of Halladay and Lee, as well as Arizona's Ian Kennedy. Kershaw also led NL starters in opponents' batting average (.207) and WHIP (0.98).

Halladay led with eight complete games and walked only 35 in 233.2 innings. Lee led the majors with six complete-game shutouts. Kennedy led the NL in winning percentage (.840) and tied Kershaw's victory total.

AL Cy Young Award
1. Justin Verlander, Detroit; 2. Jered Weaver, Los Angeles; 3. James Shields, Tampa Bay

A no-brainer, as Verlander's season will earn him serious MVP consideration as well. Besides winning a Triple Crown (24 wins, 2.40 ERA, 251 IP), Verlander also led in opponents' batting average and WHIP.

Weaver's ERA was only .01 higher than Verlander's, and he was second in WHIP and fourth in opponents' batting average.

Shields' 11 complete games were six more than any other AL starter, and he tied for the league lead with four shutouts.

NL Rookie of the Year
1. Craig Kimbrel, Atlanta; 2. Freddy Freeman, Atlanta; 3. Danny Espinosa, Washington

First things first, and I say this every year: This award needs to be divided into separate hitter and pitcher honors.

Kimbrel set the rookie record with 46 saves, and did it in truly dominant fashion: 77 IP, 48 hits, 127 strikeouts. That's a crazy strikeout ratio of 14.8 per nine innings.

Freeman's line is very solid, especially without much protection in a mediocre Braves lineup: .282/.346/.448 with 21 homers, 76 RBI, 32 doubles, 161 hits.

Espinosa hit as many homers as Freeman, drove in 10 fewer runs, stole 17 bases in 23 tries, and played Gold Glove-caliber second base. The only drawback is a .236 batting average.

Others who could get a vote include Wilson Ramos, Vance Worley, Darwin Barney, Josh Collmenter, Brandon Beachy and Dillon Gee.

AL Rookie of the Year
1. Jeremy Hellickson, Tampa Bay; 2. Eric Hosmer, Kansas City; 3. Mark Trumbo, Los Angeles

Hellickson's 2.95 ERA pitching predominantly against AL East competition is quite an accomplishment. He also allowed only 146 hits in 189 innings, threw two complete games and one shutout.

Trumbo put up bigger power numbers in 149 games than Hosmer did in 128 games. But Hosmer led Trumbo in batting average, on-base percentage, OPS, hits and runs.

It's tough to leave off Jordan Walden, Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova, all of whom could receive votes.

NL Manager of the Year
1. Kirk Gibson, Arizona; 2. Ron Roenicke, Milwaukee; 3. Tony La Russa, St. Louis

Everybody knows about Gibson's toughness and football-like mentality, but he's also a stickler for fundamentals and execution, and is as prepared and numbers-knowledgeable as anybody.

Roenicke handled the challenge of winning a division title as a first-year manager with a clubhouse full of strong personalities ? no easy task.

Postseasons don't count in the BBWAA balloting, but just getting to the playoffs without his No. 1 starter, and despite key injuries and roster upheaval, made La Russa's last season one of his best.

The Pirates' late fade cost Clint Hurdle a spot here.

AL Manager of the Year
1. Joe Maddon, Tampa Bay; 2. Ron Washington, Texas; 3. Jim Leyland, Detroit

It doesn't seem to matter who Maddon has on his roster. The guy just has a knack for setting the proper tone and getting the most out of his players. Getting to the playoffs again without Carl Crawford, Matt Garza, Carlos Pena, Jason Bartlett and with an entirely rebuilt bullpen is remarkable.

Washington has become a better in-game manager, and nobody ever has questioned his ability to teach and motivate. Winning back-to-back pennants these days is no easy task, even with a stacked roster like the Rangers'.

Unite or risk fragmentation, Barroso tells EU (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Europe must unite to tackle the euro zone debt crisis or risk fragmentation, decline and irrelevance, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Sunday.

Barroso's solidarity call, in a commentary for The Observer newspaper, seemed particularly aimed at Britain, where the euro zone debt crisis has fueled an already strong eurosceptic strain.

"As we witness fundamental changes to the economic and geopolitical order, Europe needs to advance together or risk fragmentation," Barroso said.

"The dynamic of globalisation in financial and economic terms, but also in geopolitical terms, confronts Europeans with a stark choice: live together, share a common destiny and count in the world; or face the prospect of disunity and decline. In this defining moment, we either unite or face irrelevance," he said.

Barroso said he hoped that when historians looked back on these times "they will understand that we stepped back from the brink of fragmentation. I hope they will see how the UK fully engaged with fellow member states and institutional partners to ensure the stability of the European Union."

British Prime Minister David Cameron has repeatedly called on euro zone leaders to take urgent action to save the euro.

Britain, which has clung to its pound sterling, refuses to contribute to bailout funds for stressed euro zone countries, but at the same time fears the loss of influence that could come with being left behind in a two-speed Europe.

Cameron's attitude earned him a rebuke from an irritated French President Nicolas Sarkozy at an EU summit last month.

Cameron faced criticism at home this week from opposition Labour Party leader Ed Miliband who accused him of being dangerously complacent about the euro zone crisis and of choosing to lecture the euro zone from the sidelines instead of leading the search for answers.

Barroso said the crisis had shown that the euro area needed deeper integration of policies and governance. "This is the only way to secure the sustainability of the euro," he said.

"And it must come together with a strong focus on generating growth," he said.

He said the speed of the 27-nation EU bloc and the 17-nation euro area "can no longer be the speed of the slowest or most reluctant member," implying that Britain must allow other states to forge ahead with closer integration.

"Neither should Europe veer backwards to the 19th century type of politics, when peace and prosperity were supposed to be guaranteed through a precarious balance between a limited number of powers," Barroso said.

He said the euro area must not be treated as an "opt-out" from the EU. "The challenge is how to further deepen euro area integration without creating divisions with those member states that are not yet part of it," he said.

Deepening integration in the EU must involve deeper democracy, he said. He took issue with the view that Europe was being run by officials who were taking over from elected politicians, saying the European and national parliaments guaranteed democratic legitimacy.

A technocrat, Lucas Papademos, has become Greece's new prime minister, while in Italy, former European Commissioner Mario Monti, also viewed as a technocrat, is expected to be entrusted with trying to form a new administration.

Amid flood catastrophe, Thais ready for festival (AP)

BANGKOK ? Every year when the moon is full and the rainy season draws to an end, Thailand's waterways fill with millions of floating lotus-shaped lanterns ? a symbolic, centuries-old gesture once meant to placate the country's goddess of water.

Today, many Thais still believe the candlelit boats launched during Loy Krathong can carry misfortune away with them, allowing past sins to be cleansed and life to begin anew.

This year, flood-ravaged Thailand has plenty of reason to pray for rebirth ? and little reason to celebrate.

The festival, due Thursday, comes on the heels of a cataclysmic waterborne disaster that's drowned one-third of the country in three months, killing 529 people and wiping out rice fields and factories and livelihoods along the way. The flooding is the worst in Thailand since World War II, and it's not over yet. Damage so far is likely to exceed $6 billion. Recovery will take months.

"Most people don't feel like celebrating this year ? there's been too much sadness and suffering," said Saithong Sateankamsoragai, a Bangkok flower vendor who sells the tiny boats, called krathongs, that are an integral part of the annual festival.

Saithong fled her own home late last month after chest-level water engulfed it. Now she lives with her sister in a drier part of the capital, a refugee forced to flee by the water this Southeast Asian kingdom is ironically paying tribute to.

Tragedy in mind, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has canceled all official celebrations in Bangkok, including those along the Chao Phraya river ? the chocolate-colored waterway that snakes through the city of glittering condominiums and decrepit apartment blocks.

In recent weeks, the river's banks have brimmed to record levels, forcing a halt to dinner cruises and fueling fears the mighty waterway could swamp downtown.

Outside the capital, in cities floodwaters have spared, festivities are going ahead. They include the northern town of Sukhothai, where the tradition is believed to have been born. Revelers there have already begun setting off fireworks this week, filling the skies with the spellbinding spectacle of balloon-like lanterns.

The mood in Bangkok, where many neighborhoods remain submerged, is far more subdued. The Culture Ministry is calling for revelers to float just one boat per family, or float them online through websites on which you can light digital candles and incense and watch yours float on a full-screen rendering of lake.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority, meanwhile, is urging people in flooded zones not to launch any at all.

Close to a million krathongs are typically set adrift annually in the capital alone, and there is concern they could trigger fires in abandoned homes or clog drains and canals critical to helping ease the massive pools of runoff bearing down on the metropolis of 9 million people.

Most krathongs are made from hardened, painted bread or ornately curled banana leafs filled with yellow marigold flowers and metallic-purple globe thistles. Some are built from environmentally unfriendly non-biodegradable plastic foam.

Thais joke they won't have to go far from home to find water this year. "We probably can float the krathongs right in the house," tweeted one.

Bangkok authorities have designated a dozen parks where krathongs can safely be launched.

"Of course it's different than it has been in years' past," said Ladda Thangsupachai, a senior Culture Ministry official. "Can there be fun while there is suffering?"

Loy Krathong has its roots in a long ago era when most Thais lived in stilt houses made of wood, dependent on rivers and rain-fed agricultural land for their sustenance and survival.

That life is slowly being erased by mass urban development, which critics say has exacerbated the current crisis. Over the last few decades, canals that once allowed annual floodwaters to pass through the capital unheeded have been paved over to make room for roads, highways, shopping malls and housing estates.

"Most people in Bangkok have lost their connection to water, it doesn't exist like it did in the past," said Siripan Nogsuan Sawasdee, Associate Professor of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University.

Loy Krathong, meanwhile, has morphed into a romantic evening for hand-holding lovers, a relaxing night for families and friends, a commercialized holiday in which beauty contests are held.

Thanking the water goddess ? Phra Mae Khongkha ? or asking her forgiveness for polluting the nation's life-sustaining rivers, "isn't on people's minds" any longer, Siripan said. "Most people don't believe in that anymore."

Still, as floodwaters approached Bangkok in early October, the city's governor held a special ceremony to pay tribute to the water goddess and beg for the crisis' swift end.

Floodwaters came anyway, and Bangkok's drowning outskirts are still reeling from the catastrophe.

Even at the city's unflooded flower market, vendors say business has been cut by half. Fewer people are buying krathongs, and the flowers used to decorate them are in short supply because fields have been submerged.

Saithong said she would launch her own float this year on the Chao Phraya out of respect for tradition.

"It gives us a little bit of inspiration," Saithong said. "It gives us hope that life will be better next year."

However, the Delphi Automotive IPO buyers who held the shares for the long haul were disappointed. The company started laying off employees in 2001, and changed it?s name from Delphi Automotive Systems to Delphi Corporation shortly after. Scrutiny from the SEC came in 2004 in regards to accounting practices, and certain transactions. Then in 2005 Delphi filed for bankruptcy.

Now why are we seeing renewed interest now in the upcoming revamped Delphi Automotive IPO? Is it just a recycled deal ? Or have conditions changed for the better?
Well the jury is still out, and as most know the IPO market is iffy at best. Many of the recent deals that have traded, seem to be at the mercy of the premarket S&P futures to decide their opening pops or declines.

Many of the old school Delphi investors know that the company was bleeding money earlier in the decade, however conditions have changed. So far in the last two years, the company has been extremely profitable, and margins have been healthy as well.

At this point the Delphi Automotive IPO is slated to trade in Mid-November, and they are intending to issue 24.1 million shares in a range between $22 and $24.

Broward County, FL ? Ten people were injured Sunday, November 6, 2011, when a Tri-Rail train collided with a car in Oakland Park. The train crash occurred just before 7 p.m. on the CSX railroad tracks at Commercial Boulevard, just went of Interstate 95, reported the Miami Herald.

According to reports, a Tri-Rail train hit a vehicle on the railroad tracks, injuring 10 people aboard the passenger train.

The occupants of the vehicle managed to get out of the vehicle and to safety, before impact.

The collision left nine people with non-life-threatening injuries and one person with more serious injuries.

The impact of the crash ?bumped the train a little bit,? said Cody Schisler of Boynton Beach, who was a passenger on the train, the Palm Beach Post reported.

The injured were transported to Holy Cross Hospital and Broward General Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

It is unknown why the vehicle was on the tracks, leading to the crash.

Investigations are underway.
