40 Years Later: Collectors Keyed Up Over Ford Pinto

This year, the Ford Pinto turns 40 and fans of the much-maligned economy car are celebrating with a drive from Denver, Colo., to an auto show in Carlisle, Penn.
Leading the caravan this week are Norman and Louise Bagi. Louise will be behind the wheel of her 1976 Pinto Runabout. It has a V-6 engine and air conditioning, making it a top-of-the-line Pinto.

"The seats have the upgraded, blue and orange plaid," says Norman Bagi, "It's almost like the Brady Bunch threw up in that car, its wonderful!"
Between the seats there's a red fire extinguisher, "Just in case," says Louise Bagi.
It's impossible to talk about the Pinto without mentioning the one thing probably everyone knows about the car: a 1977 Mother Jones expose revealed problems with its fuel system.
The detailed story was shortened into a popular understanding of the Pinto, according to Norman Bagi: "You hit 'em in the butt and they blow up."
Norman says the problem was exaggerated and now there's a simple retrofit that fixes the issue. He's a big fan of Pinto retrofits, in general. His 1977 powder-blue Pinto coupe has a V-8 engine in it.
"It's a handful in the turns and you got to really know how to drive it," he says. "If you punch it or let off the gas hard going into the turns you're going to find yourself sideways real quick."
Norman says he started out a Mustang fan, but now he's all about the Pinto. One reason is the nostalgic reaction to the car today. Bagi says people will beep and wave on the road.
"They'll follow you to the gas station and get out and talk about the Pinto they had or their sister had, or the first car they had in college," says Bagi.
The Bagis are leading their caravan of Pinto drivers from Denver to the Carlisle Ford Nationals in Pennsylvania this week ? that's about 1,600 miles. But Louise Bagi says she's not worried about her Pinto making it.
"I'm more worried about the tornadoes in the Midwest!" Bagi says, laughing.
The Pinto Stampede is scheduled to arrive in Carlisle, Penn. on Thursday. Organizers are using the drive to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? A global wireless industry group Thursday disputed the significance of a report released by a UN health organization citing a potential cancer link from use of mobile phones.
CTIA-The Wireless Association said the UN agency ?conducts numerous reviews and in the past has given the same score to, for example, pickled vegetables and coffee.?
This classification ?does not mean cell phones cause cancer,? the industry association said in a statement, noting that ?limited evidence from statistical studies can be found even though bias and other data flaws may be the basis for the results.?
The reaction came after the World Health Organization?s cancer research agency said the use of cell phones and other wireless communication devices are ?possibly carcinogenic to humans.?
The radio frequency electromagnetic fields generated by such devices were deemed as potential cancer agents ?based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer,? the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said in a statement.
A group of experts meeting in the French city of Lyon over the past eight days ?reached this classification based on its review of the human evidence coming from epidemiological studies,? said Jonathan Samet, president of the work group.
The wireless association said the IARC working group ?did not conduct any new research, but rather reviewed published studies.?
It also noted that the US Federal Communications Commission ?has concluded that ?there?s no scientific evidence that proves that wireless phone usage can lead to cancer?? and that the US Food and Drug Administration has also stated that ??the weight of scientific evidence has not linked cell phones with any health problems.??

Twitter Getting Photos In Order Ahead Of iOS 5 Integration
And now we know a bit more.
First of all, this move is a direct assault on services like TwitPic and yFrog. With Twitter Pictures, you?ll be able to upload from Twitter.com and the clients and you?ll get a nice, tidy URL that links to your picture (and a small thumbnail may now appear in your stream). We?ve heard that this might use the twimg.com URL that Twitter has used internally for a long time, but that?s not certain yet.
And while it?s a direct assault on longstanding ecosystem players, we?ve also heard that Twitter did the right thing and reached out to these guys quite a long time ago. Specifically, we?ve heard that in January, Twitter sat down with a few of the major players to let them know their intentions to move into the space. Presumably, those guys will move into more white-label offerings now (maybe even with Twitter?s help in some way), rather than die off.
So why is Twitter doing this? After all, the service is famous for having difficulties staying up as they scale ? why get into the image business? Well, for one thing they may be using Amazon S3 to host the files rather then do it on their own servers. But more importantly, this is another move by Twitter to be more fully in control of their product. Some may point to the revenue that yFrog and others pull in from ads as playing into this, but that money is likely negligible to Twitter. It?s about owning the product.
And they may have a very good reason for doing that right now.
We?ve heard from multiple sources that Twitter is likely to have a big-time partner for such a service: Apple. Specifically, we?re hearing that Apple?s new iOS 5 will come with an option to share images to Twitter baked into the OS. This would be similar to the way you can currently share videos on YouTube with one click in iOS. Obviously, a user would have to enable this feature by logging in with their Twitter credentials in iOS. There would then be a ?Send to Twitter? option for pictures stored on your device.
Apple announced today that they plan to show off iOS 5 for the first time at WWDC next week, confirming a report of ours from March. Now you see why Twitter would want to get this picture service out there ASAP. And why they?d want their own service.
No word on other photo players ? namely Facebook and Flickr ? also being baked into iOS 5. But Apple does have deals with both of those companies for iPhoto, so it would make some sense.
