Is The Lenten Season Awkward For Muslims? Not At Georgetown University

www.huffingtonpost.com

Since Muslims and Christians often find common ground in Jesus' teachings, I believe that a holy period focused on Jesus provides opportunities to reinforce the commonalities between our faiths. Georgetown University showed me the enormous potential for interfaith dialogue during Lent.

Joshua Fields Millburn Talks 18-Minute Minimalist Fitness

Whether it?s a lack of time, energy or cash, there are a million excuses that can get in the way of our staying fit. After all, exercise can be difficult to fit into our busy schedules. But self-proclaimed minimalist and best-selling author?Joshua Fields Millburn?is calling bluff on all of those excuses and he?s going to tell you why.

Millburn, 31, shares his ?minimalist? lifestyle on The Minimalists, a blog he co-authors with longtime friend Ryan Nicodemus.

The pair define minimalism as ?a shedding of life?s excess in favor of what?s important,? which allows them to ?spend less time and money on material possessions and focus instead on health, relationships, and pursuing their passions, among other things.?

Minimalism has affected all areas of Millburn?s life, including his fitness routine. Millburn, who once counted himself as ?doughy, flabby and weak? at the age of 28, created a set of simple exercises that require just 18 minutes of his time and yield measurable results. His daily workouts paired with a clean diet have allowed him to shed 70 pounds and be in the best shape of his life.

We spoke with Millburn about how minimalism has affected his view on health and fitness, and how it?s helped propel him toward optimum health.

What inspired you to get healthy??

I felt like crap. I was tired and sluggish and it was harder to enjoy my life. To top it off, I looked like crap, too; I was 70 pounds heavier than I am now. I realized that without my health, nothing else really matters anyway.

How has minimalism shaped your approach to health and fitness?

I do simple exercises that I enjoy. I discovered that I didn?t need to hit the gym for two hours a day to get fit. I can exercise for less than 20 minutes and if I do that every day, it makes a massive difference in my life.

In your article ?Minimalism is Healthy: How I Lost 70 Pounds,? you recommend associating junk food with pain to gain leverage not to eat poorly. How has this approach helped you clean up your diet?

For a long time, I treated food as entertainment?as a sort of pacifier. No more. Now food is nutrition; it?s my fuel. I had to stop thinking of it as entertainment. That doesn?t mean I don?t enjoy my meals. I enjoy them immensely. I just don?t eat to pacify myself any longer.

How did you formulate your ?18 minute workout? plan? What do you do when you get bored with it?

In addition to my daily 18 minutes, I walk a lot, which is my form of mediation?just me and my thoughts. That said, I don?t get bored with my exercises, because I push myself, which is never boring.

Diet is clearly a huge part of staying fit. In brief, how would you describe your approach to a healthy diet?

Diet is so important. I eat a lot of greens, a lot of fruits and vegetables. Other than fish, I don?t eat meat, nor do I eat sugar or bread. I avoid dairy and processed foods. And I don?t have ?cheat days.?

You argue that exercise gives us more time rather than less time, like most people assume. Can you elaborate/expound on this idea?

When I was fat (yes I was fat; let?s call a spade a spade), I was tired and I would often crash in the afternoons or evenings. I don?t crash anymore; I have more energy at age 31 than I ever did in my corpulent 20s. I also require less sleep these days, which gives me extra time to write/read/think/live life.

?????????????

Millburn closed our interview with this simple encouragement: ?Health is a lifetime commitment. You?ll never ?get there.? Thus, the key is to make tiny improvements each day, incremental improvements that?ll drastically change your health in the long run. It?s amazing what you?ll see in the rearview after a month, a year, two years of traveling down the right path.?

Count us encouraged.

BEHOLD: The First Banner Ad Ever ? From 1994 | Embargo Zone

Joe McCambley

Joe McCambley, co-founder of The Wonderfactory, a New York digital branding firm, reminded us this week in the Harvard Business Review that he was responsible for the best ? and worst ? online ad invention the internet has ever seen: The first ever banner ad.

Since it first appeared in October 1994 to promote seven art museums, sponsored by AT&T, to the readers of HotWired.com, the banner ad has earned publishers billions of dollars in revenues.

Its ubiquity has also driven ad prices down to levels that have bankrupted dozens of old media companies, and web users largely revile them

Indeed, there's an entire industry of digital agencies currently devoted to dreaming up ways of marketing on the net that don't involve banners.

And yet it persists. (Business Insider = guilty!)

The first banner ad was made by Modem Media, a digital agency where McCambley worked, that was later acquired and folded into Digitas.

Of those who saw the ad, 44 percent clicked, McCambley remembers. Here it is:

Husker Hockey isn't Coming to The B1G Anytime Soon, But It Does ...

Shawn Eichorst says the Nebraska athletic department won't be starting a division 1 ice hockey program. That announcement has no real effect on the Husker Hockey team, though. Yes, that's right. Husker Hockey is a very real entity that plays in anonymity in Fremont, due to a lack of ice in Lincoln. But that could be changing.

On his monthly appearance on the Husker Sports Network, Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst threw cold water on the idea of the athletic department starting up a division 1 ice hockey program. The only sport Nebraska has any intention of starting is the new sand volleyball program. That's cold water, not the ice that a hockey program would need. A lot of people had hopes that with Eichorst's background at Wisconsin and the Big Ten's expansion into hockey that the Huskers might join the ranks of the division 1 schools with hockey programs. But that doesn't appear to be in the cards at this time.

That doesn't mean that Husker hockey is just a figment of people's imagination. You might be surprised that it's a very real thing. Yes, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has a hockey team. It's not an NCAA program, of course. Rather, it's a club sport, sponsored by the University's recreation department. It's not associated with the athletic department. The university provides the team some practice time at Lincoln's "Ice Box" arena at the former State Fairgrounds, which is the home rink for the USHL's Lincoln Stars. Games are played at the Sidner Ice Arena in Fremont. In 2007, former state auditor John Breslow donated $7 million to build the Breslow Ice Center, but the plans never moved beyond a concept until November, when land just south of Haymarket Park became available for the project. Plans are now to complete the building in 2014, if all of the issues are resolved.

I recently asked head coach Larry Taylor a little bit about the Husker Hockey team. Taylor said it dates back to 1972; current assistant Mark Champion was the captain of that first hockey team. It was a sometimes-on, mostly-off proposition for many years until 2005, when Taylor became coach. Taylor was in his fourth year coaching the Lincoln Junior Stars high school team when some former players asked him for help in getting the team reorganized.

The Husker hockey program joined the American Collegiate Hockey Association, which organizes these non-scholarship hockey teams. They play under NCAA rules, but outside the jurisdiction of the NCAA. In recent years, the Husker Hockey team can claim a few accomplishments to their credit:

  • In 2008, the Huskers took 2nd place in the Big 12 Championship
  • In 2009, the team joined the N.C.C.H.A. league and moved to Division III in the A.C.H.A. In that year Nebraska were the regular season champions but lost in the championship game to Iowa State
  • In 2011, Taylor won his 100th game against Wyoming
  • In 2012, the team joined the West Conference/Silver Division of the M.A.C.H.A. league
  • Jan 2013 The team took 2nd place in the Big 10 Championship
  • This year, Nebraska reached 100 players on the Alumni Roster
  • Each year since 2009, the Huskers have qualified for the Pacific Regional Tournament

This weekend, the Husker Hockey team will take on Northern Arizona in the ACHA's Pacific Regional at 4:30 pm Friday afternoon in Springfield, Mo.

Without scholarships or even much support from the University, it's expensive for the players on the team. Taylor estimates that it costs each player $2200 a season to participate. Why do they do it? "That?s easy ? for the love of the game!" Taylor says it takes quite a bit of dedication from the players to stay up with school, part-time jobs, and the practice time and travel, but they do it because they want to.

Whether the athletic department starts a hockey program or not is really immaterial to this team (they hate the word "club", even though it's technically accurate). Division 1 hockey would be played at a different level entirely. This team's goal is provide an outlet for players who want to play the sport, but aren't able to do it at that level.

underworld awakening haywire dog the bounty hunter

We only have ourselves to blame following MK defeats, says Bracknell Bees coach Cox

Frustrated Bees coach Gareth Cox refused to blame referee Stefan Hogarth following Bracknell?s 4-2 defeat against Milton Keynes Lightning on Sunday.

The match official left the rink at the final buzzer to a crescendo of boos from Bees fans following a number of questionable decisions and a lack of penalty calls in favour of the hosts.

Cox suggested the loss was down to defensive errors and bad luck, but he did question a few of the calls made by Hogarth and his officials.

His first grievance was an icing call he felt was missed while netminder Tom Annetts was being replaced for an extra attacker as Bees went in search of a goal to take the game to overtime.

The change almost yielded a fourth goal for the Lightning, as a stranded Annetts watched the puck trickle narrowly wide of an empty net as he and those around him stopped in anticipation of the call.

Cox was also unhappy no official spotted an alleged instigation from MK?s Grant McPherson midway through the first period which resulted in him and Alan Lack exchanging a number of blows.

But the coach was left frustrated with his side?s overall performance.

He said: ?A couple of defensive errors cost us really, that was it.

?They are a good team are Milton Keynes and they put up a strong performance this weekend against us.

?On Saturday we were shocking and we thoroughly deserved to lose that game, but on Sunday I felt we were hard done by.

?The icing call they missed at the end really hurt us. When Tommy (Annetts) is coming out of goal for the extra guy there is an icing call there that gives us an extra few seconds and that part of it killed us.

?But this is hockey and we cannot moan about the referees every week.

?This weekend we were just not good enough to get the points.?

On the performance of the match officials, he added: ?It absolutely kills me that he (Hogarth) went and spoke to their bench and immediately on the next play it is a penalty against us, so I said to him, ?if I speak to you do I get a foul play out of it??

?Alan Lack had a fight, but then there is the inexperienced linesman; one is supposed to take them to the penalty box and the other guy is supposed to be watching the play.

?It?s little things like that that frustrate the hell out of us really.?

Keen to avenge the 8-2 drubbing at Planet Ice the previous evening, Rob Lamey gave Bracknell the lead shortly after a goalless opening period when he turned the puck home on 21.24.

MK, though, equalised through Kamil Tvrdek six minutes later and then took the lead courtesy of a Blaz Emersic strike on 31.52. Tvrdek then added a third early in the third period.

Lamey gave Bees hope with his second three minutes from time.

But with Annetts sacrificed for the extra attacker, an overhit back pass resulted in Tvrdek firing into an empty net.

The result leaves Bees seventh in the EPIHL standings, four points adrift of Swindon Wildcats.

Bracknell travel to Guildford Flames on Saturday (6pm), before Telford Tigers visit the Hive on Sunday (6pm).

Fidelity: 401(k) balances grew 12 percent in 2012

BOSTON (AP) -- Employee 401(k) accounts are growing fast, thanks to the surging stock market and increased contributions from workers and their employers.

The average account balance grew nearly 12 percent last year, Fidelity Investments said on Thursday. The average was $77,300 at the end of 2012, up from $69,100 a year earlier, according to Fidelity, the nation's largest 401(k) administrator.

The average balance is up sharply since the stock market hit bottom in early 2009, following the financial crisis. Back then, the average was $46,200.

The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index was up nearly 7 percent for the year through Wednesday. So it's likely that account balances will climb further when first-quarter numbers are in for the 12 million 401(k) accounts that Fidelity administers.

In the final three months of last year, 401(k) balances rose a modest 2 percent. The average balance was $75,900 at the end of the third quarter.

The S&P 500 and a broad U.S. bond market index finished the fourth quarter largely unchanged, although there was plenty of drama. Stocks tumbled following President Obama's re-election as it appeared talks to avert the "fiscal cliff" would become fiercely partisan. But the market recovered as negotiators slowly made progress, ultimately reaching a Jan. 1 deal to avoid severe tax increases and delay spending cuts.

For the full year, the S&P 500 posted a return of 16 percent and bonds were up about 4 percent as corporate profits improved and the economy continued to recover from the Great Recession.

Fidelity estimates that about two-thirds of last year's increase in the average 401(k) balance was attributed to investment returns and one-third to worker contributions and employer matches.

Over the past 10 years, those two components have played a roughly equal role in boosting account balances, with 53 percent attributed to contributions and 47 percent to market gains.

"You really need to contribute to your account, because those contributions have an equal weighting to the market appreciation over the long term," says Beth McHugh, vice president of market insights at Boston-based Fidelity.

Investment earnings and contributions can grow tax-free in an employer-sponsored 401(k) account, which is a key reason why they're a popular way to save for retirement.

The amounts that investors have saved through their 401(k)s vary widely depending on a participant's age. Fidelity said the average year-end balances were $143,300 for participants 55 and older and not yet retired; $120,400 for baby boomers born from 1946 to 1964; $59,100 for Generation Xers born from 1965 to 1978; and $15,400 for those in Generation Y, born from 1979 to 1991.

Overall, the average employee contribution in Fidelity-administered 401(k) plans has remained steady at around 8 percent of annual pay for the past four years. Factoring in employer matches, the total savings rate rises to 12 percent. In the latest quarter, 5.8 percent of participants increased the amount of their 401(k) paycheck deductions, while just 3.1 percent decreased the amount.

The number of employees increasing their deductions has exceeded the number decreasing them in each quarter since early 2009. That indicates employees feel more comfortable about their financial situations than during the recession, although wage growth has been slow and unemployment remains high.

Yet workers who have stayed in the market long term have found it difficult to rely solely on investment gains to build up 401(k) savings. The S&P 500 remains about 3 percent below its historic peak in October 2007.

Pebble watch pulls all notifications from the iPhone, but only with jailbreak

The Pebble already does a good job of pulling notifications from stock iOS apps to your wrist, including SMS, email previews and calendar appointments. But if you want a broader range of alerts from third-party apps -- say, Google+ -- then you're basically stuck. Unless, it seems, you're prepared to jailbreak your iPhone. Developer Conrad Kramer recently tweeted to say that his "BTNotificationEnabler" tool is available on Cydia, and that it allows every single arrival in your Notification Center to be sent to a Pebble or other compatible Bluetooth device. It's unlikely to induce many smartwatch owners to liberate their phones, even with the relatively easy and untethered evasi0n hack now available, but at least we'll have one more bullet point the next time someone asks "why jailbreak?".

How Personal Development Training Impacts Business Success |

By Bruno Raynal, Blue Thinking

Many business owners avoid personal development training, believing that self-improvement won?t necessarily impact their company?s success. It requires them to face certain aspects of their personality that they may not like, even pointing out their weaknesses?both personal professional. While investing in self-improvement can seem like a scary task at first, the rewards are typically immeasurable. In fact, research has shown that business owners ? personal development plays a huge role in the success of their organizations.

Overcoming Limitations

Whether they consciously know it or not, most business owners set limitations for themselves. But success isn?t measured by these limitations?it?s measured by how they excel past them. Personal development training helps break down limiting behaviors and shows business owners how to adopt more sound practices while empowering the way they think.

Stop Self-Sabotaging

If someone were to tell business owners that they were hindering their own success, they?d say they were crazy. But self-sabotage is all too real. Subconscious mindsets are hard to identify with the rational mind. Beliefs and fears deep within the subconscious, like fear of responsibility, failure, or taking on criticism, can keep business owners from moving forward and achieving their goals. Personal development training with a professional business coach can help business owners identify these subconscious blocks and develop strategies for pushing past them.

More Effective Stress Management Strategies

Business owners must deal with all kinds of stressors on a daily basis. In fact, the more successful they are, the more stress they encounter. Stress comes from many different areas of their business including, but not limited to:

  • Feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work to do
  • Making the right business decisions in the face of increasing competition
  • Dealing with unexpected obstacles to success
  • Personnel issues
  • Product development concerns
  • Cash flow and profit issues
  • Pressure to perform at a high level each and every day
  • Balancing family and work

The list goes on and on. Stress is highly destructive for any business and any individual overseeing that business. Personal development training doesn?t take away the stress, but it helps business owners make a more conscious effort to identify and manage it. Rather than just recognize it?s there, they learn how to use stress management strategies to reduce its presence altogether. Without effective stress management it?s easy to lose focus, become negative about business development, and self-sabotage business success.

Personal development training is highly effective for business owners, especially when led by an experienced business coach that specializes in stress management. Business and personal development coaches can help high-level individuals set and achieve manageable goals, see the big picture while also getting all of the little things done to keep their business moving forward, inspire sales teams, and avoid self-sabotaging behaviors that hinder their progress.

If your business has become stagnant and you want to see better results, consider personal development training with a business coach. You may be surprised to uncover thoughts and behaviors that are holding you back from achieving both your personal and professional potential. Iran says it has begun upgrading uranium centrifuges

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran said on Wednesday it had started installing a new generation of machines for enriching uranium, an announcement likely to annoy the West and complicate efforts to resolve a decade-old dispute over its nuclear program.

It came on the day the U.N. nuclear watchdog began talks in Tehran to try to advance a long-stalled investigation into suspected military dimensions of the program.

Iran had already told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it planned to introduce new IR2-m centrifuges to its main enrichment plant near the central town of Natanz - a step that could significantly speed up its accumulation of material that the West fears could be used to develop a nuclear weapon.

"From last month the installation of the new generation of these machines started," Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, was quoted as saying by the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA).

"We have produced the machines as planned and we are carrying out the installation gradually ... to complete the tests."

One diplomat accredited to the Vienna-based IAEA, which regularly monitors Iranian nuclear sites including the one at Natanz, said he was surprised by the Iranian announcement.

"My understanding until (Abbasi-Davani's statement) was that they hadn't started installation," the envoy said.

Enriched uranium can fuel nuclear power plants, Iran's stated aim, or, if refined to a high degree, provide material for bombs, which the West suspects is Tehran's real purpose - something Iran strenuously denies.

If deployed successfully, new-generation centrifuges could refine uranium several times faster than the model Iran now has.

It was not clear how many of the new centrifuges Iran aimed to install at Natanz, which is designed for tens of thousands; an IAEA note to members implied it could be up to 3,000 or so.

Abbasi-Davani said the new machines were specifically for lower-grade enrichment of uranium to below 5 percent purity.

STOCKPILE FEARS

Iran has been enriching some uranium up to a concentration of 20 percent fissile material, only a short step from weapons grade of 90 percent, and it is this stockpile that has prompted Israel and the United States to warn that they will do whatever is necessary to prevent Iran being able to build a bomb.

The major world powers have imposed sanctions to try to press Tehran to give up nuclear activities with a possible military dimension, while Iran wants them to recognize what it sees as its right to refine uranium for peaceful purposes.

The big powers' next talks with Iran are scheduled for February 26, although few expect any movement from Tehran before its presidential election in June.

The announcement of the new centrifuges "could be perceived as an effort prior to any negotiation by Iran to collect as many as bargaining chips as it can", said nuclear proliferation expert Mark Hibbs at the Carnegie Endowment think tank.

"It doesn't necessarily mean they are shutting the door."

The IAEA has been trying for over a year to secure the access that its inspectors say they need to investigate suspicions of nuclear weapons research.

Its immediate priority is to visit the Parchin military base southeast of Tehran, where it suspects explosives tests relevant to nuclear weapons may have taken place, perhaps a decade ago, an accusation Tehran denies.

Iran is ready to come to a "comprehensive agreement" with the IAEA if its nuclear rights were recognized, and this could include a Parchin visit, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

But Abbasi-Davani played this down on Wednesday.

"Currently there is no talk about a visit to Parchin or any other site, " he said, according to the Fars agency.

Iran on Tuesday confirmed a Reuters report that it had begun converting small amounts of its 20-percent enriched uranium into reactor fuel, a move that, if expanded, could slow the growth in its stockpile.

But Abbasi-Davani said on Wednesday that the conversion was only taking place to feed the Tehran Research Reactor.

"This is not aimed at limiting the stockpiles of the 20 percent uranium and will not be," he said, according to Fars.

OUYA CEO sings the praises of NVIDIA, says OUYA will be 'best ...

OUYA and NVIDIA have a kind of love thing going on right now. The $99 Android-powered game console designed by Yves B?har's fuseproject is powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 3 -- this much we already know. What we didn't know is that the folks at OUYA are working directly with a team of folks at NVIDIA on the project, and that NVIDIA is helping the company to max out its Tegra 3 processor for use on a console rather than a mobile (no battery dependency means the little chip can go much further than usual).

"The partner that we've worked the most with, that is incredibly supportive of developers, NVIDIA, they have multiple people on their team dedicated to our account," OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman told us in a recent interview. She was responding to a question regarding partnerships the company's forged to make OUYA a reality, such as the aforementioned involvement with B?har's fuseproject studio. Despite the OUYA running Google's mobile OS, Uhrman said, "We haven't worked very much with Google." As for NVIDIA, however, the American chipmaker is going all in, helping the OUYA to be the, "best Tegra 3 device on the market," according to Uhrman.

That praise isn't all one-sided, of course; NVIDIA had praise to heap as well. "We have a dedicated team working with OUYA to ensure that Tegra 3's performance is being maximized. They've been amazing to work with," NVIDIA senior VP of Content and Technology Tony Tamasi told us. "The rich catalog of optimized and differentiated TegraZone games -- along with the work being done with developers -- ensures a flourishing ecosystem is in place and continues to grow." That support is unlikely to end with this year's OUYA. Uhrman said her company's console, unlike the big three console manufacturers, will launch anew annually, following the mobile model. And that model means beefier internals, such as NVIDIA's Tegra 4, announced just over a month ago at CES. In so many words, we very much expect NVIDIA and OUYA's lovefest to continue.

For the second time in a month, Stephen and Matt Long set their Laser sails on the emerald waters of Miami. From Jan. 26 to Feb. 2, they joined the world?s top Olympic class competitors in the ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami.

Established in 1990 by U.S. Sailing and formerly known as Miami OCR, the regatta annually draws elite sailors, including Olympic medalists and hopefuls from around the world. The regatta is a mainstay on the winter circuit for sailors who are campaigning for the Olympic Sailing Competitions in Rio 2016, and is the second stop in the 2012-13 series following Melbourne, Australia, and preceding Palma, Spain, and Hyeres, France.

In addition to being an ISAF Sailing World Cup ranking event, the regatta is also used as an aid in selecting members of the 2013 U.S. Sailing Team.

This was the Longs? first time at Miami OCR, and they weren?t sure what to expect. The first day on the water the U.S. Sailing Team Laser coach offered to coach the two youth sailors for the entire regatta. The other U.S. sailors welcomed the two youngsters and were extremely helpful as well.

Each day the two met for debriefing with the U.S. Sailing Team and went over what went well and discussed what things they could improve. It was a very friendly and warm atmosphere at the regatta. They learned a lot from all of the competitors. Regardless of country, you could sense the camaraderie among the sailors both on and off the water.

After three days of 80-degree weather with 12 to 18 knots of wind, they were ready to split the 70 competitors from 23 countries into two fleets. The top group of sailors would be placed in Gold fleet and the others would sail in Silver fleet.

Matt Long, having celebrated his 16th birthday just two months earlier, missed being placed in Gold fleet by a mere seven positions.

Over the next couple of days, the two competed well in Silver fleet, and Stephen was able to post some of his better scores for the regatta. Ultimately, Stephen and Matt finished ninth and 13th, respectively, in Silver fleet.

Their previous visit to Biscayne Bay required them to spend Christmas Day and New Year?s Eve flying to and from Miami so they could compete in the Orange Bowl Youth International Regatta. The Orange Bowl regatta is the largest youth regatta in North America. Every year it draws more than 600 competitors from more than 20 countries. This was their third Orange Bowl regatta, and this year Matt placed seventh and Stephen placed ninth in the highly competitive 29-boat Laser fleet.

The two brothers are attending Dos Pueblos High School, where Stephen is a senior and Matt is a junior. They train locally with the Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation. The program supports the Santa Barbara, Dos Pueblos and Laguna Blanca sailing teams. The program is directed by local San Marcos and UCSB alumni Willie McBride. Practices are three days a week and often held in conjunction with the UCSB sailing team.

Groups want broad EPA probe of tainted Texas water and whether it's related to fracking

Groups want broad EPA probe of tainted Texas water and whether it's related to fracking

HOUSTON (AP) ? More than 80 environmental?groups?on Monday demanded a?broad?investigation into whether the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency behaved improperly when it abruptly dropped enforcement actions against a gas driller it had accused of contaminating?water?in?Texas.

The 86?groups?from 12 states sent a letter to the?EPA's?inspector general, Arthur Elkins, asking that he widen an existing investigation into the agency's actions. They cited an Associated Press report indicating the agency had scientific evidence linking Range Resources' drilling operations to?water?tainted?with explosive methane and cancer-causing benzene in Weatherford, a town west of Fort Worth.

Range Resources has said the?EPA?dropped its demands that the company provide affected families with cleanwater?and locate the source of the contamination after the company threatened not to cooperate with a high-profile national study into hydraulic fracturing.

The?groups, including Greenpeace, the Environmental Working?Group?and the Center for Biological Diversity, said the?EPA's?actions make it "appear that the agency is abdicating its legal obligation to protect the health and environment of all Americans."

The?groups?note that when the?EPA?dropped its enforcement actions and ended a legal battle with Range Resources, it did not mention an analysis done by Geoffrey Thyne, an independent scientist who was hired by the agency to analyze?water?samples it collected from more than 30?water?wells in the Weatherford area. Thyne had concluded that the gas found in the?water?wells was similar to the gas Range Resources was producing from the Barnett shale rock formation.

Thyne's document, obtained by the AP, has never been made public by the?EPA. The inspector general should consider in his investigation why the?EPA?made no mention of that study when critics said the actions against Range Resources lacked scientific credibility, the environmental?groups' letter argued.

The?EPA?did not immediately comment on the letter. In the past, the agency has said dropping the action against Range Resources allowed it to "shift its focus in this case away from litigation and toward a joint effort on the science and safety of energy extraction."

Range Resources also did not immediately comment on the letter. The company has denied it contaminatedTexas?water, saying the gas in the?water?was from a different rock formation and does not originate in the Barnett shale.

In the letter, the environmental?groups?also question whether by not releasing Thyne's report, the?EPA?denied the public "access to information that could be useful for preventing negative impacts" associated with hydraulic fracturing, also called fracking.

Fracking combined with horizontal drilling has allowed drillers to extract once out-of-reach gas and oil by pumping large volumes of chemical-laced?water?at high pressure into thick, impermeable rock formations. The process cracks the dense rock, releasing the oil and gas.

The industry contends the method is safe. Critics, however, say it contaminates?water, and demand greater federal oversight.

In the case near Fort Worth, the?EPA?never said how the drilling operation contaminated the groundwater in that area.

Former Ala. hostage having 'hard time sleeping'

For the first time since his release from an underground Alabama bunker, 6-year-old Ethan and his mother, Jennifer Kirkland, have revealed new details about his six days as a hostage, telling TV-host Phil McGraw that he "has had a very hard time sleeping soundly."

Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, abducted Ethan and held him in a 6-by-8-foot bunker 4 feet underground near Midland City, Ala. He had snatched the boy from a school bus after shooting the driver to death.

PHOTOS: Alabama Hostage Situation

The standoff ended after six days when Dykes engaged in a firefight with SWAT agents before they stormed the bunker and killed him.

Ethan and Kirkland sat down with McGraw ("Dr. Phil") for an exclusive one-on-one interview last week, in which they described Ethan's time underground with Dykes.

"We know for example that Mr. Dykes seemed to have some empathy for the child," McGraw told ABC News. "We do know that Mr. Dykes fried him chicken in the bunker to feed him and take care of him."

McGraw visited Ethan in Alabama two days after the daring rescue Feb. 4.

"He has said a few things," Kirkland said in the interview that will air on "The Dr. Phil Show" Wednesday. "Now I know that he has had a very hard time sleeping soundly. He slings his arms and tosses and turns. He's cried out a few times."

McGraw told ABC News that Ethan hasn't been back to school yet, and even the sight of a school bus seems to agitate him.

McGraw said his fixation on the school bus indicated that he associates it with something that was traumatic for him.

"The Dr. Phil Show" says it plans to follow up with Ethan and his mother to provide support and resources. The show also says the Dr. Phil Foundation is making a financial contribution to help support Ethan in the future.

Click here for photos from the Alabama hostage situation.

McGraw said he doesn't think Ethan truly has a grasp on what happened to him.

"From an adult perspective, [he doesn't]," McGraw said. "I think he understands that there was a very violent act, and it scared him greatly."

State Department Makes Case for Oil Pipeline from Canada

Secretary of State John Kerry will have his first meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. One of the topics expected to come up is the Keystone XL pipeline. The State Department continues to review the revised route that was approved by Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman.

Imagine if I worked for the State Department and explained why the permit for Keystone XL was approved. It would include something like this:

The Department found that the addition of crude oil pipeline capacity between Canada and the United States will advance a number of strategic interests of the United States. These included increasing the diversity of available supplies among the United States? worldwide crude oil sources in a time of considerable political tension in other major oil producing countries and regions; shortening the transportation pathway for crude oil supplies; and increasing crude oil supplies from a major non-Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries producer. Canada is a stable and reliable ally and trading partner of the United States, with which we have free trade agreements which augment the security of this energy supply.

Approval of the permit sends a positive economic signal, in a difficult economic period, about the future reliability and availability of a portion of United States? energy imports, and in the immediate term, this shovel-ready project will provide construction jobs for workers in the United States.

Here's a reasonable case to permit a pipeline that would connect Canadian oil to American refineries.

Oh wait! The State Department did state this... in 2009 when it approved a permit for the Alberta Clipper pipeline that runs from Alberta to Wisconsin.
Every point the State Department makes in favor of this pipeline can be made for Keystone XL:

  1. It would increase the ?diversity of available supplies among the United States? worldwide crude oil sources in a time of considerable political tension in other major oil producing countries and regions.? [North Africa and the Middle East haven?t become more stable.]
  2. It would shorten ?the transportation pathway for crude oil supplies.? [South to oil refineries along the Gulf Coast.]
  3. It would increase oil supplies from a ?major non-Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries producer.? [Our friend Canada.]
  4. It would supply oil from a ?stable and reliable ally and trading partner.? [Canada again.]
  5. It would send ?a positive economic signal, in a difficult economic period.? [Unemployment is at 7.9%.]
  6. And finally it would ?provide construction jobs for workers in the United States.? [Look at that unemployment number again.]

The State Department made a great case for the Alberta Clipper pipeline and the exact same case can be made for Keystone XL. There is no good reason it?s been delayed this long.

Since the statement is already half-written, let?s just get some white-out, replace ?Alberta Clipper? with ?Keystone XL,? and get on creating jobs and helping the economy.

Samsung Puts NFC Stickers In Coffee Bean In Singapore

Samsung TecTile and Coffee BeanSamsung and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf have placed Samsung-branded NFC stickers in all 51 outlets in Singapore. Their marketing campaign runs from 8 February to 7 March, and will reward Samsung NFC-device users with an upsized drink for tapping the poster and Liking Coffee Bean?s Facebook page after it pops up. Right now, that means the Galaxy S3 or Note 2 devices, and you still have to Like the page to complete the deal. I don?t see this one going too far in terms of helping the adoption of NFC stickers or even raising the number of Likes for Coffee Bean here, especially since the promotion only runs for a month. It?s interesting, though, to see NFC continue to be used in different ways by large vendors, although each brand not working with each other to move NFC forward is a huge bump in the road for the technology. Samsung claims that other NFC-enabled, Mifare-compliant Android phones should be able to work with its TecTile NFC stickers. The NFC ecosystem in Singapore is one which the government is also enthusiastically backing, with mixed results. The government recently launched its national tap-to-pay system late last year, after years of throwing money at retail outlets to get them to put in contactless payment terminals. (Incidentally, the S3 was the chosen flagship device for the national payment system, and was used to demonstrate the application to the press.) All of this is backed on a national technology standard for contactless payment called Cepas (Contactless e-Purse Application), that was set up in 2009. Anecdotally, in spite of all the infrastructure built up around NFC payments, take-up hasn?t been great here, because of the many other ways to pay. Most who take public transport already carry a contactless card similar to the London Oyster card or the Hong Kong Octopus card. The EZ-Link card is based on that aforementioned Cepas standard. Furthermore, the iPhone?s lack of NFC capability isn?t helping the contactless situation, either.

NASA's Landsat Data Continuity Mission: New Earth observation satellite launched

Feb. 11, 2013 ? NASA's Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) roared into space at 1:02 p.m. EST (10:02 a.m. PST) Monday aboard an Atlas V rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

The LDCM spacecraft separated from the rocket 79 minutes after launch and the first signal was received 3 minutes later at a ground station in Svalbard, Norway. The solar arrays deployed 86 minutes after launch, and the spacecraft is generating power from them. LDCM is on course to reach its operational, sun-synchronous, polar orbit 438 miles (705 kilometers) above Earth within two months.

"Landsat is a centerpiece of NASA's Earth Science program, and today's successful launch will extend the longest continuous data record of Earth's surface as seen from space," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "This data is a key tool for monitoring climate change and has led to the improvement of human and biodiversity health, energy and water management, urban planning, disaster recovery and agriculture monitoring -- all resulting in incalculable benefits to the U.S. and world economy."

LDCM will go through a check-out phase for the next three months. Afterward, operational control will be transferred to NASA's mission partner, the Department of the Interior's U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and the satellite will be renamed Landsat 8. Data will be archived and distributed free over the Internet from the Earth Resources and Science (EROS) center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Distribution of Landsat 8 data from the USGS archive is expected to begin within 100 days of launch.

LDCM is the eighth in the Landsat series of satellites that have been continuously observing Earth's land surfaces since 1972.

"Landsat has been delivering invaluable scientific information about our planet for more than forty years," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said. "It's an honor to be a part of today's launch to ensure this critical data will continue to help us better understand our natural resources and help people like water managers, farmers, and resource managers make informed decisions."

The use of Landsat data been transformed in recent years by advancements in computing power and the decision by USGS to allow free online access to the information. This revolution has allowed scientists to detect changes over time to our planet and has enabled a host of applications based on Landsat measurements to be developed by researchers, the private sector, and state, local, and tribal governments.

LDCM continues that legacy with more and better observations. The spacecraft carries two instruments, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS). The measurements will be compatible with data from past Landsat satellites, but the LDCM instruments use advanced technology to improve reliability, sensitivity, and data quality.

"LDCM is the best Landsat satellite ever built," said Jim Irons, a LDCM project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "The technology will advance and improve the array of scientific investigations and resource management applications supported by Landsat images. I anticipate new knowledge and applications to emerge with an increasing demand for the data."

OLI will continue observations currently made by Landsat 7 in the visible, near infrared, and shortwave infrared portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. It also will take measurements in two new bands, one to observe high-altitude cirrus clouds and another to observe atmospheric aerosols as well as water quality in lakes and shallow coastal waters. OLI's new design has fewer moving parts than instruments on previous Landsat satellites.

TIRS will collect data on heat emitted from Earth's surface in two thermal bands, as compared with a single thermal band on previous Landsat satellites. These thermal band observations are becoming increasingly vital to monitoring water consumption, especially in the arid western United States.

On Monday afternoon, Bolden will tour Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex-4, which is home to a new Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) launch pad. The pad is nearing completion to support SpaceX launches beginning in 2013. NASA's first use will be in 2015 with the launch of the Jason-3 mission, which will precisely measure sea surface height on Earth to monitor ocean circulation and sea level. SpaceX is the newest American company to demonstrate the capability to launch science missions for NASA and other government agencies. Jason-3 will be developed and operated as part of an international effort led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Bolden also will see the Orbital Sciences Pegasus rocket, being readied at Vandenberg, for the launch this April of NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) heliophysics mission.

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. built the OLI instrument in Boulder, Colo. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center built the TIRS instrument. Orbital Sciences Corporation built, integrated, and tested the spacecraft in Gilbert, Ariz. USGS provided the LDCM ground system. The launch was managed by NASA's Launch Services Program based at the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. United Launch Alliance provided the Atlas V launch vehicle.
