Hostage suspect was loner, missed court appearance

The Alabama man who is suspected of taking a young boy hostage had only lived in the area a few years and kept to himself, according to neighbors and officials.

Sources close to the investigation in the Dale County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect to NBC News as Jimmy Lee Dykes, age 65.

Police in the small town of Midland City, Ala. scrambled Tuesday afternoon after a gunman shot a local school bus driver and took a boy, age 5 or 6, hostage.

Local NBC station WSFA reported on Wednesday that the suspect was talking to police through a PVC pipe from an underground bunker where the man kept the boy captive overnight.

But before the dramatic events of the past two days, neighbors were worried about Jimmy Lee Dykes.

Dykes missed a bench hearing on a misdemeanor charge of menacing at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dale County Court Circuit Clerk Delores Woodham told NBC News.

That charge is related to an allegation by a James E. Davis, Jr., who said that on Dec. 10 Dykes threatened him with a pistol and then fired at Davis? truck as he pulled away, according to a document filed in Dale County District Court on Dec. 26, 2012,

The sources close to the investigation told NBC News that police did not know if the missed court appearance had anything to do with Dykes' motive.

Deputies from the county sheriff?s office had arrested Dykes on the charge of menacing. He was placed in Dale County Jail on Dec. 22 and bond was set at $500, according to the documents. No employment was listed on the documents. Dykes was bonded out that same day by D&D Bonding Co., Woodham said.

Neighbor Danny Dean, 57, said that he saw Dykes working in his yard most of the time.

?He's always got a shovel,? said Dean, who had lived in the neighborhood for about twelve years. ?He loved to shovel for some damn reason.?

Dean said that Dykes only moved into the area about a year and a half ago. A property tax clerk for Dale County confirmed that Dykes has paid his taxes on his 1.5 acre property on time for the past two years.

Dean, whose property is about three-tenths of a mile from Dykes? home, said that he did not know the man well, but that no one else seemed to, either.

?He just works in the yard constantly,? Dean said of Dykes, who dug his own driveway. ?As far as passing, he?s always been a friendly fellow.?

Another neighbor, Claudia Davis, told the Associated Press that she had seen a darker side of Dykes.

?Before this happened, I would see him at several places and he would just stare a hole through me,? Davis, 54, told the AP. ?On Monday I saw him at a laundry mat and he seen me when I was getting in my truck, and he just stared and stared at me.?

Tim Byrd, a chief investigator with the Dale County Sheriff?s Office, told the Southern Poverty Law Center?s Hatewatch that Dykes was a ?survivalist? with ?anti-American? views.

?His friends and his neighbors stated that he did not trust the government, that he was a Vietnam vet, and that he had PTSD,? Byrd told the SPLC. ?He was standoffish, didn?t socialize or have any contact with anybody.?

?He?s the type that thinks the government?s out to get him,? neighbor Michael Creel told local paper the Dothan Eagle. ?He?s not right in the head.?

Another man who said he lives near Dykes told the AP that the man had once threatened his children after Smith?s dogs went on to Dykes? property. Smith told the AP that his son and daughter were on the school bus during the shooting in Midland City on Tuesday.

?He?s very paranoid,? Smith told the AP. ?He goes around in his yard at night with a flashlight and a shotgun.?

Eva Syples, a clerk for the Dale County Probate Office, said she has lived in the area since 1968 and the small town has never seen anything like the situation that developed Tuesday. She said most people just stop at the fresh fruit and vegetable stands and barbecue joints that dot Highway 231 on their way by the town to Montgomery or the beaches of Panama City, Florida.

It?s the kind of small town where people extend an unasked for hand, Syples said: ?They have true southern hospitality down here. We go above and beyond to help your neighbor.?

The owner of one of those nearby barbecue stands, Charlie Webb, said his restaurant sits on Highway 231 about 300 yards from the property where law enforcement converged on Tuesday afternoon.

?Most people just pulled up in the parking lot wanting to know what was going on,? Webb, 59, said of the people that pulled into his Webb?s 231 Bar-B-Q last night to watch the police lights. ?They?re all just pretty shocked.?

Mantel's history novel picks up another major award

LONDON (Reuters) - British novelist Hilary Mantel added to her groaning trophy cabinet on Tuesday, picking up the Costa Book Award 2012 for "Bring Up the Bodies," her historical novel about the life and court of Henry VIII and his chief minister Thomas Cromwell.

The acclaimed bestseller has already won the Man Booker prize for fiction, making Mantel the first Briton and first woman to win that coveted award twice.

The 60-year-old also won the Booker Prize in 2009 for "Wolf Hall," the first instalment in what will be a trilogy.

Broadcaster Jenni Murray, chair of the nine-member panel who decided which of five Costa category winners would take the overall prize, said "Bring Up the Bodies" stood "head and shoulders" above the rest.

"This is a very difficult prize to judge, because there are five categories and they are so different," she told reporters ahead of a reception in London announcing the winner.

"It's not an easy prize to judge, but I have to say today one book simply stood head and shoulders - more than head and shoulders, on stilts - above the rest."

Mantel had been the bookmakers' favourite for the award, which comes with a cheque for 30,000 pounds ($47,000). Category winners each win 5,000 pounds.

Asked whether the judges had considered giving the prize to another author to spread the spoils of literary awards, which usually bring with them a sizeable spike in sales, she replied:

"We know this has had lots of prizes. We couldn't allow the number of times it's already been lauded to affect our decision. It was quite simply the best book."

Murray praised what she called the "poetic" prose of the novel, which traces the downfall of Anne Boleyn in 16th century England and Henry's dangerous attraction to Jane Seymour.

"It's so set in its time so you know exactly where you are and who you are with, but it's also incredibly modern," she said. "I have no doubt that I want to go back to it. I've read it twice and I want to read it again."

ALL-FEMALE SHORTLIST

"Bring Up the Bodies," which like Wolf Hall will be adapted for the stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company, was one of an all-female shortlist in 2012.

Journalist, critic and writer Francesca Segal's debut novel "The Innocents," set in a Jewish community in northwest London and modelled on Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence," won the Costa First Novel Award.

Scottish poet Kathleen Jamie won the poetry prize for her collection "The Overhaul," and writer/illustrator and dyslexia campaigner Sally Gardner claimed the Costa Children's Book Award for "Maggot Moon."

Husband-and-wife team Bryan and Mary Talbot jointly won the Costa Biography Award for "Dotter of her Father's Eyes," a biography of James Joyce's daughter interwoven with a memoir of the author's own troubled relationship with her father, Joycean scholar James S. Atherton.

Mary Talbot, a scholar and author, teamed up with Bryan, who has worked on underground comics and superhero stories including "Judge Dredd" and "Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight".

Their collaboration was the first graphic work to win a Costa category award.

The Costa awards go to writers based in the UK and Ireland for a work published in the last year. They were established in 1971 by Whitbread but were renamed after Costa Coffee took over the sponsorship.

The 2011 Costa Book of the Year was "Pure" by Andrew Miller.

Even without those changes, plenty of kids will play football, either because their parents will want them to or when push comes to shove their parents won?t stop them from playing.

So even if fewer kids play at the youth level, there will still be 32 NFL teams and 120-plus Division I-A (or whatever they call it now) college programs handing out scholarships.? As Jim Harbaugh astutely points out, fewer players in the pipeline means fewer players jockeying for those spots.

?An old maid writes with the detachment of a god.?

In honor of the bicentennial of the publication of ?Pride and Prejudice,? I give you the above words, by D. A. Miller, America's most swashbuckling reader of Jane Austen.

That?s the central mystery of Jane Austen?s novels. And what a mystery it is. The author?s voice, though we?re always reminded it belonged to a sour-faced spinster who couldn?t score a husband to save her life, flatly refuses to make itself meek. Meek? Jane Austen?s voice doesn?t even make itself human.

Rather, the Austen world spirit sweeps in omnisciently to ?Pride and Prejudice,? which turns 200 today, laying down universal truths like Solomon or HAL. From there it manipulates the pouts and slaps and rosy countenances of all the single ladies?the Catherines and Elizabeths and Emmas?all the coquettes, ing?nues and hysterics for whom Jay McInerney and all of us wild-eyed Janeites still pine.

The sadistic Austen voice brings authority, stern judgment and only the ghost of a chance for redemption: Her girls, after all, are always caught in the gears of a tightly engineered Austen marriage plot, from whose bourn. No traveler returns.

The Austen voice can mock, rig and savor that plot only because it?that Austen-god?suspends itself well outside the life-threatening grip of courtship and matrimony.

This, anyway, is the argument of Miller in his book, ?Jane Austen, or the Secret of Style.? I can think of no better way to celebrate the bicentennial of ?Pride and Prejudice,? Austen?s great novel of bulimia (among other matters) than with Miller?s book, which like anything good?Mr. Darcy, strong tea, food?can make the brain ache in big doses.

?Great novel of bulimia?? That?s right. Professor Miller, who taught me in graduate school to see the god in the spinster, also showed me what a tyrant Austen was about the importance of being thin and brief (good) versus being fat and prolix (bad, very bad). (Worse than you know.)

His lecture on this subject led to my fascination with the character of Charlotte, Elizabeth?s would-be best friend. You?ll recall that Elizabeth Bennet is the heroine of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the witty resourceful daughter of an emotionally abusive dad who likes Elizabeth best because she?s kind of a tomboy, and smart; she also sucks up to him by slagging off her sisters. In that way, Elizabeth reminds many female reader-types of ourselves?trying to upstage other maybe prettier girls as frivolous nitwits in the name of winning the attention of Important Men. Oh, and then hating ourselves for it.

In any case, Elizabeth has a friend, Charlotte. Charlotte is plainer than Lizzie, with no game in the drawing room. In short, she?s nowhere near as cool as Lizzie, so Lizzie bestows confidences on her?huge emotional outpourings of shame and remorse that she reserves for Charlotte alone, believing, in the immemorial way of popular girls, that the plainer girl is lucky to hear even the snotty, hiccupping self-pity of a superstar like Elizabeth Bennet.

Of course, Lizzie never reciprocates by listening to Charlotte, which is why she is appalled to find out that Charlotte is not with her in lockstep on her oft-repeated resolution not to marry a loser. Charlotte, who?s been an obedient sidekick to Lizzie for half the novel, turns the tables and boldly elopes with a loser?a former suitor of Lizzie?s, in fact?and Lizzie is absolutely crushed. Deservedly so. She can?t control everyone! (Only her maker, Austen, can.) It?s a horror when you realize this; take it from me.

How is this bulimia? I?ll tell you. Lizzie is all about being brief and witty; only goofy girls or sententious men talk too much. To monopolize conversations is like eating whole cakes. It shows no restraint and it?s disgusting. At the same time there?s much talk of Lizzie?s light-footedness and general low body weight. This is in contrast to the droning bore, Miss Bates, who is coded as fat and also can?t shut up.

But how does Lizzie keep her conversation and her figure in fighting shape? Does she have naturally modest appetites for food and attention? No. She is roiling with the same hungers everyone has, but she?s put herself in an empire-waist straitjacket of wit, wit and more wit, so she has nowhere to go when she just wants to babble and sob. To binge. To purge.

That?s where Charlotte comes in. By expressing herself to Charlotte at length and in sordid hues?gorging on cupcakes of emotion and then barfing them up in the silent, yielding bin of her friend?Lizzie frees herself up to impress Mr. Darcy by seeming slim and tart. (Is that the acid reflux?)

Go back and read ?Pride and Prejudice? and see for yourself. We read something about green smoothies, see pictures of the glowing skin and toned bodies that are achieved as a result of treating our body like a temple, and get really excited about filling our fridges with greens and our pantries with quinoa. But then after a couple of weeks of choosing dandelion tea over coffee and stevia over sugar, things can go a little pear shaped. It?s inevitable that old habits may rear their alluring head, but this doesn?t mean that you are failing at carving out your new healthy lifestyle. You are just getting started.

Here are some ways to stay on track and keep motivated when you?re transitioning to the healthy life.

1. Add stuff in rather than take stuff out: Rather than imposing strict rules on yourself, the easiest way to introduce new healthy habits is to add in healthy habits in order to crowd out the bad.

2. Know that it doesn?t have to be all or nothing: If you?ve been doing a brilliant job of eating clean, but then have a moment of weakness, this does not mean that you are back to square one. Health is like a muscle that will get stronger and stronger the more you work on it. If you fall off the wagon, just get back on without making yourself feel guilty.

Tim Cook reportedly uses Town Hall meeting to address Android, Wall Street, and more

CEO Tim Cook reportedly held an all-hands Town Hall meeting last week to address the state of the Apple with employees. Subjects covered were said to include employee perks, production from supply chain to sales, the retail stores, the competitive landscape with Google's Android, and opportunities in China. 9to5Mac's ace reported, Mark Gurman, has a full rundown. Here's a highlight from the competitive part:

Cook discussed iOS?s integrated, reliable experience versus Android?s fragmentation with a plethora of devices. [..] Cook also noted that Android is about marketshare with its range of devices and low pricing, while iPhone and iPad products are about experience, top hardware and software quality, and, most importantly, actual usage by customers.

No phone hardware, software, or service is perfect. Android's choice of devices is a huge selling point for some, a huge pain point for others. Google's been iterating Android at a fairly brisk pace and while things iOS users don't like about it, including how interface works, are still issues, it's not safe to assume that'll always be the case.

That's why Apple's strategy for beating Android can't rely on poor user experience from Google. It has to rely on better software and services from Apple. Otherwise it's outside Apple's control. Based on how much passion Cook expresses when he discusses everything from the stairs at an Apple Store to the unibody on MacBook to the way they build the iPad mini, he knows that better than anyone. They just have to continually execute on it.
