US softens China currency criticism

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ?

The Treasury Department said Tuesday that China's currency remains undervalued, but stopped short of branding the country a currency manipulator.

In its semi-annual report on international exchange rates, the Treasury Department said Chinese authorities "have substantially reduced the level of official intervention in exchange markets" since last year, and have "taken a series of steps to liberalize controls on capital movements."

Critics blame Beijing for holding down the value of its currency, the renminbi, in order to boost China's competitiveness in international trade at the expense of other countries.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney vowed during the campaign to brand China a currency manipulator, a potential step towards trade sanctions. The Obama administration, however, has avoided this designation.

The Treasury Department said in its report Tuesday that the renminbi has appreciated by 12.6% against the dollar when adjusted for inflation since June 2010. Nevertheless, it added that the renminbi "remains significantly undervalued, and further appreciation... against the dollar and other major currencies is warranted."

Treasury said that for China to secure sustainable growth going forward, it needs to increase domestic consumption. Additional renminbi appreciation is a "critical part of this process," the report said, as a stronger currency increases the purchasing power of Chinese households.

The oft-delayed report was originally scheduled to be published last month.

Sunlight instantly turns ice water to steam using nanoparticles

1 hr.

Sunlight and itsy bitsy flecks of metal or carbon are all that?s required to quickly vaporize icy-cold water, according to researchers who recently unveiled a new steam-generating process that could revolutionize industrial practices without the hangover of greenhouse gas emissions.

Steam is used throughout our world. It spins turbines to generate electricity and heats kettles used to brew beer. It is used to sterilize medical equipment and distill alcohol.?

But, generating steam typically requires tons of energy to heat and boil water. The most common sources of energy are coal, oil, and natural gas ? fossil fuels that when burned emit carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas that?s building up in the atmosphere and causing the planet?s climate to change.

Researchers at Rice University unveiled a method that uses light-absorbing nanoparticles submerged in water to convert solar energy directly into piping?hot?steam. It is so effective that it can even produce the?steam from ice water.

The tiny particles heat up so quickly that they instantly vaporize water, rather than dissipating the?heat into the surrounding fluid. Precisely how this works is a bit of a mystery, according to Naomi Halas, ?director of the nanophotonics laboratory at Rice University.

?There seems to be some nanoscale thermal barrier, because it is clearly making steam like crazy,? she told Technology Review.

The process has an overall efficiency of 24 percent, compared to about 15 percent efficiency for solar panels such as those on your neighbor?s roof. But generating electricity is unlikely the first application of the new technology, which was developed with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.?

Rather, it will be used for sanitation and water purification in developing countries, helping to stem the spread of disease. To that end, the Rice University team has already created a solar steam-powered autoclave to sterilize medical and dental instruments at clinics without access to electricity.

The technology could, however, also improve the efficiency and lower the cost of large-scale solar thermal energy generating plants, which use sunlight to warm up oil that is then used to heat water and generate steam to spin turbines.?

Generating steam directly with the nanoparticles would be 3 to 5 percent more efficient and result in a cost savings of about 10 percent due to the less complex design, Todd Otanicar, a mechanical engineer at the University of Tulsa, told Technology Review.?

For more information, check out the video below. A paper on the process was published Nov. 19 in the journal ACS Nano.?

Asian shares fall as focus shifts to U.S. budget talks

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares ended a seven-day winning streak on Wednesday and commodities eased as investors fretted that a lack of progress in talks on U.S. budget woes risked putting the world's largest economy into recession, dragging down global growth with it.

European shares will likely track Asian peers lower. Financial spreadbetters predicted London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> will open down as much as 0.5 percent. A 0.1 percent drop in U.S. stock futures also hinted at a soft Wall Street open. <.l><.eu><.n/>

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> fell 0.5 percent, retreating from Tuesday's nearly three-week highs, with materials and energy sectors <.miapjmt00pus><.miapjen00pus> leading the declines.

"The global economy, China, Europe, needs the U.S. economy to grow, and that is why the pressure to get this deal done is greater than before," said Carl Larry, a derivatives broker at the Houston-based Atlas Commodities. "The global economy can't afford for America to slip back into a recession."

Shares in resource-reliant Australian <.axjo> eased 0.2 percent, off Tuesday's two-week highs as top miners fell on weaker gold prices.

Australia's Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics said committed investment in major resources and energy projects, the main driver of Australian growth, still rose to A$268.4 billion ($280.5 billion) at October 31 from A$260.8 billion at end-April, but the rise partly reflected higher project costs and masked a fall in the number of projects. A fall in commodity prices due to a drop-off in Chinese demand also weighed on shares.

"Markets don't really provide any sort of compelling investment value here at present because the grey cloud of uncertainty still overhangs the economic climate, in particular across Europe and the U.S., but also filtering into this part of the world as well," Jamie Spiteri, senior dealer at Shaw Stockbroking, said of Australian shares.

U.S. stocks slid overnight after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressed disappointment over little progress in dealing with the approaching "fiscal cliff" of deep cuts in government spending and big tax hikes early next year.

The Shanghai Composite Index <.ssec> slid 0.9 percent to its lowest in nearly four years as growth-sensitive sectors sank, extending losses after closing on Tuesday below 2,000 points for the first time since January 2009.

The weak Chinese stock market, along with doubts over the U.S. ability to resolve its fiscal crisis, strengthened demand for sovereign debt, helping to push the 10-year Japanese government bond futures price to a 9-1/2-year high of 144.79, while U.S. Treasuries clung to gains made on Tuesday.

Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225> slumped 1 percent, after closing on Tuesday at a seven-month high.

The Nikkei had risen 8.8 percent over the past two weeks since the government announced a December 16 election. Japan's main opposition party is forecast to win power, and investors expect it will force the Bank of Japan into aggressive easing. <.t/>

EUROPE LACKS CONFIDENCE

Tuesday's agreement by international lenders to cut Greece's debt offered relief that it has averted an imminent bankruptcy, but uncertainty remained over the lack of details on how Athens will carry out budget reforms to meet its new debt targets as analysts cited the deal as falling short of addressing medium-term financing and debt sustainability issues.

"The uncertainty brought by this approach makes European assets, including the EUR, vulnerable to global growth risks. For that reason, we think the European muddle through amplifies the market's response to the fiscal cliff discussion in the US," Barclays Capital analysts said in a note.

The euro fell 0.2 percent to $1.2924, after peaking at $1.3010 on the Greece news on Tuesday, its highest level since October 31.

Worries over the fiscal crisis overshadowed positive U.S. economic data that showed improvement in durable orders, the real estate sector and consumer confidence, which hit a 4-1/2-year high in November.

The dollar dropped 0.3 percent against the yen to 81.85. U.S. crude futures were steady around $87.16 a barrel while Brent edged up 0.2 percent to $110.13. London copper dropped 0.4 percent to $7,776 a metric ton (1.1023 tons).

Spot gold inched down 0.1 percent to $1,739.40 an ounce after slipping on Tuesday for a second session.

Southeast Asia kept some hopes that the damage to their economies may be contained from global growth deterioration triggered by the prolonged euro zone debt crisis.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia's biggest economy, sees annual economic growth in the fourth quarter at 5.9-6.3 percent, while the Philippine economy picked up more than expected in the third quarter, with the government expecting the economy to surpass its 2012 full-year growth target of 5-6 percent.

Investors were sidelined in Asian credit markets, keeping the spreads on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index little changed from Tuesday's levels.

Card firms' block on WikiLeaks did not break rules: EU

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A block on processing donations for WikiLeaks by Visa Europe and other credit card companies is unlikely to have violated EU anti-trust rules, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

DataCell, a company that collected donations for WikiLeaks, complained to the Commission about Visa Europe, MasterCard Europe and American Express Co after they stopped processing donations for WikiLeaks in December 2010. Their decisions followed criticism by the United States of WikiLeaks' release of thousands of sensitive U.S. diplomatic cables.

"On the basis of the information available, the Commission considers that the complaint does not merit further investigation because it is unlikely that any infringement of EU competition rules could be established," said a spokesman for the Commission, the EU executive.

He added, however, that the Commission would look at new information from DataCell before taking a final decision.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been staying in Ecuador's embassy in central London since June to avoid extradition to Sweden to face rape and sexual assault allegations.

Assange said there were no lawful grounds for the card companies' actions, which he said had cost Wikileaks 95 percent of its revenue and threatened his organization's existence.

PREPARING FOR A LESS WASTEFUL, LESS STRESSFUL ...

WASTE (of money, time, resources) & STRESS during the holidays.

This has been heavy on my mind for the last several Christmases. So many years of buying junk just to have something to give someone, or to pad the amount of gifts per child to increase the Christmas morning ?MAGIC FACTOR?. It has always caused me to pause and regret. More and more as each Christmas morning passes, as I survey the damage and pick up the trash?and realize how fast it goes and how little it means.

I don?t want gifts given out of obligation, and I don?t want a throwaway gift. I don?t want to be just another name on someone?s shopping list either, adding to their stress and taking money out of their bank account. I also know that it isn?t possible or even practical to expect a meaningful, thoughtful gift EVERY YEAR. That?s okay, I?m content without getting anything. All the more incredible when a gift is placed on my lap. Knowing it meant something to the person giving it.

Watch this video that Patagonia sent out today and think about how you think about gifts and giving. Think about what really matters for your family. Think about what the IDEA of gifts really means, and see if you can find a way to recreate that in other ways throughout the holiday.

?

Common Threads Initiative from Patagonia on Vimeo.

SOME EXPERIMENTS THAT MIGHT HELP:

Talk to your family about this subject, ask for support.

Gently set a present limit for extended family members who are buying for your children. This takes pressure off!

?We will be citizens and ambassadors, each with a destiny of our own, but with a common pledge to honor life, and nature.?

Name swap with big groups. Each person gets one gift per person, thus creating more time and energy to purchase thoughtfully.

Plan a family talent show for Christmas morning after the gifts are opened.

Dim the lights, light the candles, and crank the Christmas music. Put on socks and slide around the kitchen (or wood) floor, sharing your best dance moves as you make breakfast after the presents are opened.

White elephant parties. This can include gag gifts of real gifts. Especially fun when alcohol and obnoxious people are involved.

Shop for gifts second hand. A special trinket or vintage treasure from the heart.

?This is something we can do. This is something we are called to do. And if we are quiet we will surely hear it.?

Host a ?favorites party?. Each person brings multiple amounts of ONE of their favorite things, under a certain dollar amount. Everyone at the party shares, you go home with some meaningful swag.

Time spent together throughout the month in what I call ?spontaneous delight?. Usually means you are doing something new or something old with a fresh twist. Can be something as simple as a new board game, just take it off the table and onto a picnic blanket outside (or inside in front of the fire). Ask the kids to prepare ?fancy snacks?.

Take more care to find things with meaning through the year, and not just in a mad rush at the big red store at the last minute.

Ask your spouse to write you a letter and place it in your stocking Christmas Eve. Do the same for him or her.

?Living is not buying. To be a citizen of the earth is to put one?s brief life to the use of one?s dearest gifts.?

If you know someone who has a need for a big ticket item, organize a donation fund and gift the person with cash to go towards their purchase. Put the cash in a fun container, and give it in a fun way. (Put a bunch of $1 bills in a huge jar, send them on a treasure hunt.)

For people in your life with children, give them the gift of your TIME, and set up a day (or weekend) to babysit for them. (Trust me, this is better than ANY gift certificate to ANY store.)

In creative friends/family circles, host an entirely handmade holiday. (My friend Emily is involved in a handmade holiday online workshop with tutorials for holiday decorations, ornaments, and other goodies)

Make lucky bags.

Take your family on a secret mission like this or this from Andrea at Hula Seventy. It will show them what it feels like to give non material items to others.

Give the gift of your own must haves. Think of the things in your life that you use every day. Is there anything you just couldn?t live without? This could be ANYTHING: a super plush towel, the perfect wallet, or an AMAZING ice cream scoop. If you love it, it will be something that ANYONE on your list would love to have. You can give everyone (or small groups of people) the same thing! This does two things ? eliminates stress and offers them something on your ?best of? list. Label the tag and let them know why it is one of your must haves.

?Gives nature a chance to rest, and time to heal.?

Host a stocking stuffer swap with other creative friends. (organize a group of friends, tally the number of children, set the dollar amount, every adult chooses a single item to make for that number of children. Share and you receive an eclectic mix of things to fill up the stockings Christmas morning.

Plan advent activities, like our Bernard The Christmas Elf.

If you are in a service industry (photography, landscaping, sewing, carpentry, cooking, massage, graphic design?), gift that service to someone on your list on a smaller scale than your average job. Or, go for the gusto and remodel their entire kitchen. ;)

And, from the Patagonia video: reduce what you buy, repair what you can, reuse what you no longer need, recycle what?s worn out.

?PURSUE NOT WHAT WE VAGUELY WANT, BUT WHAT WE DEEPLY NEED.?

Most of all, deep breaths, we can do this again, and I wish you ALL a sweet and simple holiday.

-Tara

PS : I would love to keep the ideas coming in the comment section. If you have anything to add, please share!

Housing May Be Stable, but Not in 'Full-Blown ... - Yahoo! Finance

Housing has been trying to show a few reasons here and there to suggest the sector's worst days are behind it, but you still won't necessarily find a lot of uber-bulls out there.

Now, several stocks in the group have had good runs in 2012, led by PulteGroup (PHM), the best performer on the S&P 500 with a gain of 165.5% since the start of the year. Lennar (LEN) has been another star, climbing 93.9% and coming in at No. 5 on the list, FactSet data show.

RELATED: House Prices Are Nowhere Near a Bottom, Says Analyst

However, regardless of the state of the stocks, there remain plenty of skeptics on housing who are questioning just exactly how healthy it is. Barry Ritholtz, CEO of FusionIQ and founder of the blog The Big Picture, sees some of each side of the argument.

"Currently, housing is one of the few bright spots in the economy," he says in the attached video. "The problem with housing continues to be it's not an organic recovery, or stabilization, to use a better word. The [Federal Reserve has] driven rates down to inconceivable levels."

RELATED: QE3 Good for Homeowners, But Even Better for Banks

Foreclosures, Ritholtz says, are now rising after banks had put many of them on hold to sort out the robo-signing debacle, and he's "expecting that to continue to gather momentum."

"I'm comfortable saying housing has stabilized, but I'm not buying the 'we're in a full-blown recovery' meme," he says.

By spring, we should know which side is right on housing -- that is, whether a legitimate turn is upon the market or more weakness lies ahead, he says.

Investors, economists and homeowners themselves have no shortage of data to scour every month. Earlier this week, for example, the Commerce Department reported that housing starts rose in October to a seasonally adjusted yearly pace of 894,000, up 3.6% from the prior month. Apartment construction was the strong metric, while single-family home builds eased slightly. However, single-family construction permits were at a multi-year high.

Let us know what you think. Has housing stabilized? And what are your thoughts on the mortgage-interest deduction? Should it be left alone or eliminated?

Opening Your Mind To Spirituality ? Self Improvement

Though spirituality is not a religion, more times than not religion frequently comes to the picture when we discuss spirituality. A person can be spiritual regardless of his religious principles. Some people find spirituality by meditating, interacting with nature, being alone, connecting with other people, or joining spiritual retreats. There are a thousand and one methods to be spiritual.

The Meaning Of Spirituality

Spirituality is hard to define and its definition varies from one person to another. But for many folks, it is a higher place of being. It?s a place where we feel from our heart and realise there is more to life than what our ego makes us believe. Spirituality is the idea that all of us can be in one higher consciousness. It is love and the openness to share that love with everyone. We will be able to find spirituality just by sitting on a rock and not thinking of anything. We will be spiritual just be watching the flowing creek and realising that there?s something far greater than the ripples. Spirituality is being closer to everybody whom we touch with our own lives. It is making a bigger bond with others as well as understanding we?re all on our own spiritual journey.

How To Live A Spiritual Life

You live a spiritual life when you?re able to actually connect not only with yourself but with others too. A spiritual life is living for today and having no worries what the future may bring. It?s a life of knowing who you are and where you are going. It is making an attempt to discover what you can today so that you are heading in the right direction. A spiritual life is devoid of fear and opening your heart so that love can come in.

The Easy Way To Open Up Your Mind

When you open you open your mind to new opportunities, you are also imbibing spirituality into your life. Science has taught us time and again that what we believed we knew was wrong and that there are still new possibilities out there which can exist. Science is being rewritten, in a similar manner as religions are being discussed on as more things are being discovered and studied about mystic abilities, prayer, after life, and reincarnation. What you believe to be true is the strongest of probabilities. Spirituality is becoming familiar with the unlimited probabilities what you may be in the present. You?ve found spirituality when you find out who you actually are.

Thread: 2013 tour de wood gathering - Family Woodworking

so, anyone want to start thinking about a tourdewood event for 2013?

I will post my thoughts on this.

Timing-I believe the event should take place sometime in July or early August. Alot of people with children wont have to worry about school, and alot of people work in school systems and its usually a bit easier to get off the summer months. Late august not good, too many kids go back to college.
I also believe the event should be on a saturday, not spread out over a few days. Make it easier for anyone who might offer to host, one day, say 1pm-9pm, wont tie anyone down too long.

Place-this is the tough one. Larrys was a pretty good location, just a bit too far west for alot of east coasters. Maybe 2 events the same day, one out west, one on the right coast.
Something like central PA, might work out decent for alot of people who attended larrys gathering, and perhaps alot more from NY state, jersey, maryland, virginia, west virginia, and parts of new england, can make it in a days ride without needed hotel rooms.
And if rooms are needed, central pa is reasonably priced.
I do not have a problem hosting this event, but I have a 40x100 piece of property with a small house.
My backyard would not handle more than 25-30 people tops, and if it rained, would be very, very crowded in my small home. But, if noone steps up and enough are interested, Id be more than happy to host.

I believe getting the ball rolling now, will give alot of people time to make arrangements, and come meet alot of fellow woodworkers, spend a day, eat and drink, relax.

there are lots of things that can be planned.

heres a few going through my head.

The event will not be cheap. If someone with a piece of land offers to host, I feel everyone who intends to go, mail someone designated on this site lets say 10 dollars, then that one person can foward the money to the host, to help offset the cost of staging this event on their property.
(understand, Im not asking for money if people are willing to travel to Long Island it would be my pleasure to host and invite fellow FWW members, but I cant speak for anyone else, so to me, whats fair is fair.)

Maybe if people attending vote on things, we can have a sort of grab bag, everyone brings a 5 or 10 dollar item, wraps it, and everyone picks one so everyone gets something. maybe a bit childish, but I know I like little dooodads, and Im sure it would be fun.

If members attending want, we can have thread devoted to just items that people want to swap, sell, show off, whatever, list the items, and let the games begin.

maybe some members could offer up some of their wares as giveaways, like when mack gave away a pen, maybe a board maker could offer up a board, if I attend Id be happy to offer up a set of chairs as a giveawy.

this is touchy, but perhaps someone here with some PR experience can speak with some companies, and although we dont advertise any company, we will make mention of any company's generosity if they offer up a few freebies for the members that attend, and wed be more than happy to post pictures.
there are 1000s of hard core woodworkers on this site, wed appreciate any freebies.
(this all has to be cleared with management, this is only my ideas)

food-this is way up in the air. The host will make those decisions, but with plenty of time in advance, anyone can email the host and mention if they have any special dietary needs. Not a big deal, but maybe more people would feel a bit more comfortable in attending.

It would be nice to have some of the younger members here attend, bring the kiddies, maybe the host has a pool, or a park nearby.

there are alot of things that can make this another great event like the one at larrys, so members have to chime in and most of all, start posting you like the idea and will attend so we get some kind of idea.
Maybe someone can post a poll thread, leave it up for a month or so to see if wed get enough interest.

I know its the holiday season, and alot of people have alot of other things on their minds, but to plan and plan it right, now is the time to start tossing ideas out here.

think it over, please respond here and come up with ideas.

anyone who is interested in hosting an event like this on either coast, or even middle of the country, please speak up.

2 more things-
I would have no problem hosting. None at all. I live in south nassau county Long Island NY, Im 45 minutes from George Washington bridge, and 40 minutes from Verrazano bridge so you have an idea.

I already have a menu planned out if I host, nothing fancy at all, if you expect steak, you will be dissapointed. Some 6 foot heros, some baked ziti, NY pizza, salads, trimmings, chips, dips, fruit, (if kids attend, I will have a popcorn machine, maybe a slushy machine, candy to keep them wired all day, Id kick up the grill to make them hot dogs and burgers, and Id make sure my son would hook up one of the new TV systems with dozens of games so they can keep busy if they dont want to go to the park.
Like I said, would be nice to see some of the younger members attend also. (Id also have no problem with anyone wanted to stay a bit later and Id offer up an outdoor movie night, after 9pm, on a 12 foot screen, just has to be a family oriented movie)

I own a tiny house, but I have one bedroom free, can put air mattresses in there(Only a twin bed), and I can clean out the other spare bedroom and get a mattress in there, and I have a small den that can hold a mattress or two.
There are plenty of hotels near me, but Im sure july august on a saturday night the prices are ridiculous.

ok, Ive put whats on my mind out there, if there is enough interest over the next month, we can start planning something.

my wife is on board with this, so I have enough help with her and my children getting things set up over here.

please remember, these are my ideas, and no way represent the owners of this site. this all has to be cleared with management, something i brought up with other moderators an administrators.

Catalonia faces key test over bid to split from Spain

Emilio Morenatti / AP

Supporters of center-right Catalan Nationalist Coalition leader Artur Mas wave pro-independence "estelada" flags during a campaign meeting in Barcelona, Spain, Thursday.

By The Associated Press

GIRONA, Spain --?As in towns across this wealthy northeastern region, the maze-like cobblestone streets of Girona's medieval quarter are fluttering with flags in favor of Catalonia's independence.

But while the separatist dream of millions has never felt so close to becoming a reality, independence fervor is now coming up against the cold, hard facts of what breaking free could mean.

For this Spanish region famed for its trading prowess might be shut out of the European Union for years, a huge hurdle to doing business with its most important trading partners.

EU officials say an independent Catalonia would face the same membership conditions of any other candidate nation.?

Catalonia holds elections on Sunday that will be seen as a test of the regional government's plans to hold a referendum on independence, and one of the key issues emerging is the theoretical place of a free Catalonia in Europe.?

A survey published by El Pais newspaper this month showed that while nearly half of Catalans support independence, the number drops to 37 percent if it means being out of the EU.?

PhotoBlog: Catalans eye independence from Spain ahead of elections

Tough membership conditions aren't the only thing possibly standing in the way. The European Union's treaty states that each of the 27 member states can veto a candidate nation's accession, so a vengeful Spain could block Catalonia's entry.?

"Now we want to be a state inside Europe," said Josep Matamala, who helped create a banner combining a pro-EU slogan with the red-and-yellow stripes, blue triangle and white star of the "estelada" flag that symbolizes Catalonia's independence drive.?

'We trust Europe'
Catalonia's regional president Artur Mas, who is leading the independence charge, has voiced optimism ? perhaps wishful thinking ? that an independent Catalonia would be swiftly embraced into the EU fold.

In a recent speech in Brussels, he declared: "Catalonia has never in its history let Europe down, now we trust Europe will not let us down."?

Some pro-independence voters simply can't fathom being cast out of the EU. "I imagine that if faced with a majority of Catalans who vote yes for independence in a referendum, (the EU) wouldn't be able to turn its back on us," said 35-year-old Girona music teacher Merce Escarra.?

In 2010, Escarra was featured in the local press when she was asked by the owner of the building where she lives to remove the "estelada" flag from her balcony. "I said I had a legitimate right to protest and left it up, and it has been there ever since," she said.?

Two years later it is difficult to find a building in Girona that isn't bedecked with the red-and-yellow Catalan flag or the pro-independence "estelada."?

"Now there has been a boom in the pro-independence movement," Escarra said.

Money, neglect and language
Her reasons for wanting independence are representative of millions of Catalans: The region pays more than it receives back in taxes; its infrastructure has been neglected by the central government; and independence would ensure the survival of the Catalan language.?

While most of Catalonia's business community is taking a wait-and-see attitude, Jose Manuel Lara, the president of media giant Planeta, said he would move his company from Barcelona to Spain if Catalonia went independent, in order to remain based in the EU.?

Ramon Tremosa, a European parliament member from Mas' pro-independence party, said that Catalonia's fate would hinge on pressure being applied on Spain by other European powers and the multinational companies established in Catalonia, which would be anxious for a quick return to business as usual.?

"I can't imagine the 4,000 multinationals (in Catalonia) allowing themselves to be expelled from the EU, from the euro and the free movement of goods and capital, it's not realistic," Tremosa told The Associated Press. "Spain would not be able to stop it because it is heading toward a bailout."?

European law experts were uncertain about how quickly an independent Catalonia could join the EU.

Nicolas Zambrana, professor of international law at the University of Navarra, was pessimistic. "Spain would be in a good position to prevent Catalonia from returning to the EU," he said.?

And the idea of a fledgling Catalan state left out in the European cold is giving some independence supporters second thoughts.?

"It worries me," said Monica Casares, a 41-year-old mother of two who lives just north of Barcelona. "Taking into account that we would face a Spanish boycott on Catalan products for sure, and that we would also have to pay more on exports, we would have a big problem."?

(AP) ? South Africa spent more than $3 billion on the 2010 World Cup, and in return gained an "intangible legacy" from the first world soccer showpiece in Africa, the country's government said Friday in its final report on the tournament.

In the "2010 FIFA World Cup Country Report," released nearly 2? years after the event, South Africa's government said it spent $1.1 billion on building and upgrading stadiums alone.

Transport was the biggest cost, with $1.3 billion dedicated to improving road, rail and air links and a further $392 million on the country's main ports of entry.

In the absence of any final definitive figures on how much South Africa earned in total from being the host, the report said the World Cup had left an intangible legacy of pride and unity among South Africans and had changed the country's image as undeveloped, crime-ridden and dangerous in the eyes of the rest of the world.

"To top it all, we didn't have lions roaming the streets and we did have ATMs," the report, published by the ministry of sport, added light-heartedly.

It did predict a $6 billion boost to South Africa's economy as a result of the monthlong World Cup, according to a study by risk analysis and finance company Grant Thornton, but that was a mid to long-term projection.

FIFA reported it made a $631 million profit from the 2007-10 World Cup cycle and earned income of $3.65 billion from 2010 World Cup contracts. FIFA said it spent $1.298 billion on the World Cup in South Africa and also gave $100 million to the World Cup Legacy Trust, a fund that supports grassroots soccer projects.

"The World Cup in South Africa was a huge, huge financial success for Africa, for South Africa and for FIFA," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said in 2011 as the world body published its own financial report.

While critics have said that such a huge outlay on a 30-day sports event was impractical for South Africa ? and the final word on whether it was an economic success was still pending ? the government could argue that it had already earned over $400 million from the more than 300,000 tourists that visited for the World Cup.

The upgrade to much of South Africa's transport infrastructure was a long-term investment, the government said.

The expensive World Cup stadiums are still underused, however, and some are losing money. The Cape Town Stadium ? reportedly the most expensive of the seven new venues at $600 million ? is in the most trouble.

"This report will also serve as a reference guide and benchmark for planning other major sporting events," South Africa's government said in a statement to introduce the publication, which featured the 2010 World Cup logo and was embossed with shiny gold letters.

South Africa has said it is considering a bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Understanding The Components Of Detoxification With Ibogaine

Many have already testified to the efficacy of the Ibogaine treatment. Compared to the other drug treatment programs offered by rehabilitation facilities, detoxification with Ibogaine as a treatment has been proven to yield a higher success rate.

Ibogaine is a naturally occurring medication derived from the root bark of the Taberanthe Iboga shrub which only grows in Central West African countries. It has anti-addictive properties that aid drug patients through the withdrawal process of their treatment for addiction, and restoring the brain's neurochemistry to its original functioning. Ibogaine is known to be the most humane drug detox in the world mainly because it's all natural and it does not subject the patient to a horrifying withdrawal experience. Typically, drug patients' bodies react negatively to the deprivation of the substances they were accustomed to taking frequently or at large doses, but with Ibogaine, they will experience none of the withdrawal symptoms.

The Ibogaine natural detox program is considered the perfect starting point towards the journey to complete freedom from addiction. It lays a solid foundation of healthy habits that the patient can carry on with throughout his life. Its components include:

1. The administering of Ibogaine. This prevents withdrawal symptoms and restores the balance of the brain's chemical make-up.

2. Natural supplements like minerals, oils, vitamins, etc. These restore the body's lost nutrients due to substance abuse.

3. Exercise or physical activities. These are necessary for improving blood circulation which will properly distribute healing oxygen throughout the body.

4. Organic fruits and vegetables for a balanced diet. Foods rich in nutrients and fiber are great for the development of a healthy body with a strong auto-immune system.

5. Doctor-recommended detox hikes to eliminate existing toxins. This will also help in creating stronger muscles that may have atrophied due to the drug-dependent lifestyle of the patient.

6. Electrolytes for rehydration. Substance abuse depletes the body of moisture and most drug patients have very low electrolytes in their bodies. Also, the detox program can also rid the body of electrolytes, which may cause great physical discomfort such as muscle spasms or cramps, nausea and weakness. Electrolytes are present in foods rich in potassium like apples, bananas and moringa.

Ibogaine stays on the receptor sites for six months and within this time span all old cravings cease. For most drug programs, the six-month period is most crucial for patients because it's so easy to revert to their old ways and fall back into addiction. However, with this special ability of Ibogaine, making drug addiction a thing of the past is now much easier.

Many have already testified to the efficacy of the Ibogaine treatment. Compared to the other drug treatment programs offered by rehabilitation facilities, detoxification with Ibogaine as a treatment has been proven to yield a higher success rate.

Wrist Rehabilitation and Massage Therapy | Aloe Massage

Why Rehabilitation? ?The purpose of rehabilitation is to return an injured person to a normal and optimal functioning level in all areas of activity. ?It?s personalized to you. ?After dealing with a broken radius and immobilized wrist for 6 ? weeks (which I?ve posted about??here and here)?and after the cast was removed, I found rehabilitation to be both physically and mentally challenging. ?To attain optimal function and an ideal level of activity, I discovered creating a base line (see below), creating realistic goals, and celebrating the little improvements were quite helpful to my psyche. This was particularly important in the weeks following my cast removal to reassure myself that I was making gains. ?Don?t get me wrong, I?ve had ups and downs. I?ve had times when my wrist throbbed from doing too much (could be from some activity at the gym, or some days it could have been from working on one part of the body on a few clients that day). ?I found having an understanding of the tissues involved (bone, nerve, tendons, ligaments, fascial sheets, blood vessels etc.) and how long it takes the tissues to heal helped me in the rehabilitation process. ?It was a balancing act. I push the boundaries, to make gains in flexibility, strength and muscle endurance, but I also need to be vigilant at listening to my body as too much would have consequences such as throbbing sensations, and soreness, to name a few.

After the removal of my cast, I touched the pasty white and waffled skin and it felt delicate and thin. The skin was adhered to the superficial and deeper layers of tendons, muscles and other connective tissue of my wrist and palm. As I pushed the skin around my wrist, nothing moved; it was one solid mass. There was no differentiation between the various layers between the skin, fascial sheets, tendons, and ligaments, nor could I see the tendons in the carpal tunnel when flexing the wrist. The blood vessels were invisible on the back and on the palmer side of the wrist. The hand, especially around the thumb the soft tissue (muscles & fascia) was hard and thick, similar to the soft tissue around the wrist. The left palm was hypersensitive compared to the right palm. And the muscles of my hand and forearm had atrophied quite significantly.

White and Waffled Skin

Waffled skin and atrophied muscles.

White skin and atrophied muscles.

Immediately after the cast was removed, the orthopaedic physician assessed the movement and tissue health. ?I moved the wrist through the range of motion (ROM), where I felt pain, achiness, and stiffness. ?According to the physician, the ROM was greater than expected, which was a good start. ?Within a day of removing the cast I saw Clare Palmer, a physiotherapist at the Westside Physiotherapy and Hand Clinic. ?She took measurements in all movements of the hand. See table below on the second day and a week after the removal of the cast. ?Within a week I had full functional range in various movements. ?I was on my own to rehabilitate the sprained and strained wrist and to regain full range in flexion and extension, flexibility, strength and endurance.

Table: Movement Assessment Results

? Assessment Left Wrist ? ?Active Range of ?? Motion?(AROM) in degrees One day after cast removal ? ? ?Passive Range?of ? Motion (PROM) in degrees One day after cast removal ? AROM in degrees One week later ? ? PROM in degrees ?One week later
Flexion 32 40 55 60
Extension 42 50 65 70
Radial Deviation? 10 12 15 ?full
Ulnar Deviation 15 20 25 ?full
Pronation full full full full
Supination 60 65 90 ?full

?

There were a few rules. I could not do any maximum gripping (mountain biking, heavy weight lifting, Olympic lifting, and pull ups were out), not that my hand would have allowed me to do this. I could only return to work gradually. And I had to expect that it would most likely take 12 weeks to be fully functional and able to participate in various activities after being in a cast for 6 ? weeks.

I made a treatment plan:

  • ? To decrease stiffness in the carpal joints and wrist joints.
? To increase tissue health, increase flexibility, strength, and endurance.
? Activities of Daily Living (ADL?s): open doors with my left hand, carry bags of groceries, lift a cast iron pan, to name a few.
? Return to work (gradually of course) I started with 2 people after the cast was removed and after 11 weeks I am able to work on 5 clients/day.
? Return to the gym (Crossfit). I?ve returned but I am doing modifications to many exercises and so far so good.
? Eventually return to riding a bike (road or mountain).

Massage therapy and self-treatment. Following are the techniques I found most helpful:

  • ? Tissue mobilization: apply pressure on the muscle (soft tissue) and move the joint through the range of motion. You can add some over-pressure at the end of range. Stay within a manageable discomfort level (you?re not making a pain face! and you are not holding your breath). Repeat ? many times or for a minimum of 2 minutes.
? Dynamic stretching (Active Isolated Stretching, Contract-Relax- PNF) to the muscles of the neck, the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and fingers.
? Trigger point therapy to the flexors and extensors of my hand, wrist and elbow.
? Heat, water baths or heat pad, helped decrease the stiffness of the connective tissue and pain, and facilitate joint mobilizations.
? Friction massage to soft tissue (muscles and connective tissue) at attachment points in the palm of hand especially around the thumb and at the elbow at the common extender tendon (tennis elbow area) and common flexor tendon (golfer?s elbow area).
? Joint mobilization, with the help of a physiotherapist and self-joint mobilization.
? Movement, movement, movement. I found that typing at the computer leaves my hand stiff and less mobile.
? Strengthening and endurance: Return to work gradually. I found that working with my hands helps increase the strength and endurance of the intrinsic and extrinsic hand muscles.
? Nerve mobilizations (nerve flossing). We found the median nerve being entrapped and showing signs in the carpal tunnel. Nerve flossing helps with that.

I think time is a factor in the healing process. As for massage therapy treatments, I think it helped with pain perception and helped the tissues slide and glide over each other to increase flexibility (That?s not to say that this would not have happened with time but massage therapy may have helped speed the recovery).

Left Wrist the day the cast was removed.

Left wrist at eleven weeks after the removal of the cast.

Within the first 3 weeks of removing my cast, my sprained and immobile wrist became more flexible. The soft tissue became more resilient and I could see them glide and slide over each other and under the skin with more ease. At 8 weeks post cast, I had soreness at the end of the day after working out and seeing clients. I took time off at the gym and focused on legs. At 10 weeks, I did a 30 repetitions push jerk with 45 lbs (shoulder to overhead with a weighted bar) without any ill effects. I was now able to work on 4-5 people per day. ?At 11 weeks, the size of my muscles of my left thumb and my hand are quite similar to the right hand and the bulk of the extensors and flexors along the forearm have somewhat returned. The skin looks healthy, I can feel and pick up the tendons of my wrist, the various layers are mobile and I can see and feel the blood vessels. I have complete range of motion in the wrist except flexion, which improves on a daily basis. The next step is to work on loading the hand (like in a push up) and practicing grip strength to eventually do pull-ups.

As flexibility, strength and endurance improve gradually, I celebrate the gains I?ve achieved and I remember to be patient.

Shows, food, wine and a marathon to run it off | LGBT Weekly

SCENE OUT

WITH ANA PINES AND KIM RESCATE

A Hammer, A Bell, and A Song to Sing

Poster from Art is a Hammer by Favianna Rodriguez and Julio Salgado PHOTO: KIM RESCATE

When we attend shows we try not to read too much about it beforehand. We like to see it with fresh eyes. At A Hammer, A Bell, and A Song to Sing, our vocal chords got a surprise as the cast asked the audience to sing along for a few songs. The show takes you through songs that have brought people together throughout history during the civil rights movement, war and protest. As they say music is the universal language of the world. If you ever wished you had magical powers to bring peace to all, this will remind you that we already have that secret ? music. There?s also an art show outside of the Lyceum Stage entitled, Art is a Hammer with posters by Favianna Rodriguez and Julio Salgado. You?ll want to arrive a bit early to check it out. It?ll be an inspirational night.

When Last We Flew

As part of the affinity nights at Diversionary, our company, Pink Egg Media, hosted a women?s night party for When Last We Flew. It was a fun night surrounded with friends, food, drinks, and lots of smiles. The play had great comedic moments. It?s a coming of age tale that goes through the struggles of going through a divorce, feeling out of place, not keeping silent when those around you hurt you and falling in love.

San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival

Our taste buds are still thanking us for taking them to the San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival. There were more than 100 wineries and spirits producers, with more than 700 different wines poured, 70 of San Diego?s Top Chefs, chef cook-offs, cooking lessons, live music and autograph signings. And that was all in the two days we were able to attend. The event occurred over a 5-day period and attracted guests and talent from all over.

Really big free marathon in Las Vegas

Marathons have been a great excuse for us to get away and discover new places. We?ve been to Vegas so many times that our friends have begun to refer to it as our second home. Many times it?s been a pit stop prior to a trip to the Grand Canyon or Sundance Film Festival. Still, we?ve been there a lot. It?s where we first skydived, saw Christina Aguilera on New Year?s Eve and forgot we did until we saw the video on YouTube (an open bar would do that) and yet, we?ve never gone out and enjoyed the beautiful Lake Mead National Recreation Area until now. When we found out about this unique event, we had to sign up. A free marathon! We were so curious how it would pan out. It was the largest running event ever held at the Lake Mead NRA. There were a few kinks to be worked on as it was their first but they were easily solved with patience within minutes. The most annoying part of the whole thing was the impatience of some of the other runners. We waited about 20 minutes to pick up our bibs and some people couldn?t stop yacking about it being disorganized. We were on a line, there were no fights, names were found, and that?s not the definition of disorganized. Yes, they could have used more volunteers to make the line go faster but if the few they had were the only ones that were up to the task, be patient! We can?t even imagine how hard it is to organize a free race for 2,000 runners. We had a great time, there was plenty of water, helpful volunteers and even though it was free they still gave you a T-shirt and a medal. Hopefully, some new sponsors will jump on board for the next one. After the race, their Facebook page was full of thank you?s, and even apologies for those that were pessimistic. We hope that this running ?revolution? will continue.

This is the Modem World: We're all a bunch of cranky old men

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This is the Modem World We're All a Bunch of Cranky Old Men

I've been studying online communities since 1994, believe it or not. My master's thesis was called "Escape to Cyberia: Subcultures as Agents of Change." Go ahead, make fun of me for the title. It's cool.

But back then, no one -- or at least, very few people -- studied online communities as fodder for social science. I set out to prove that people could actually form social bonds and even social structures -- in this case subcultures -- online. No specific pricing is mentioned in today's announcement, but it's likely the Canadian price will fall close to the $499 amount charged by AT&T in the U.S.
