food and drink: Family Dinner Saves Lives!

There is a simple key to help keep your family healthy and happy. Can you guess what it is? Oh right... I put it in the title already. The fact is that numerous studies show that the decision to eat at least one meal a day as a family can have a significant impact on you and your kids.

Family dinner can be a unique time in otherwise hectic lives. I have 4 kids who participate in soccer, piano, karate, school, plays, etc. I run a chiropractic practice, am involved with my church and do personal training in the mornings. My wife is the glue that holds us all together taking care of the kids, the house and keeping track of the finances of our business. If it weren't for text messaging we might go most of our day without ever touching base in some cases. But we always come together for family dinner. It's the best time to catch up with each member of my family even if it's between telling my boys to stop spitting food and the girls to clean their plates.

Beyond this studies have shown that family meals can make your family healthier as well. Families that eat together tend to have lower rates of obesity. This is especially true when the meals are prepared at home rather than sitting down to take-out. A family meal is a great time for parents to model healthy dietary habits for kids. Other studies show that family meals lower your child or adolescent's chances of engaging in "at risk" behaviors such as: teen pregnancy, drugs, depression, suicide, violence and sexual activity. It's not just the simple act of sitting down together.

Family meals require some level of engagement to be successful. Research shows that having the TV on during dinner can negate the positive effects of a family meal. Although I'm unaware of any specific studies I imagine the same is true of firing up the smart phone or similar devices, which I'm often guilty of. (I know my wife is ecstatic to read that last sentence and I will probably hear it over and over again).

Unfortunately, statistics show that family meals are becoming less and less common since the days when we were kids. That doesn't have to be the case for your family though. Commit to at least one family meal a day and you will wind up happier and healthier.

I was wondering if other people here use finishers at the end of their workout? I?ve been doing simple experiementing for couple weeks and have really liked them. I mostly do them to better my conditioning and hopefully help me lose some more fat.I also take a minute of rest after every set of finisher.Currently after upper body day I do pushups, usually 10 at a time for total of 30-40 reps. I aim to do a bit more every workout and thus far I have been able to add few reps every workout. At the end of a lower body workout I?ve done bodyweight squats, usually 50 at a time for 150-200 reps. I first tried hindu squats, but they were way too easy and light. Regular bodyweight squats have felt far more challenging and seem to have helped strenghten the bottom position of the squat. Next I?ll propably try lunges, as bodyweight squats are starting to get too easy now.

HEBRON, West Bank (AP) ? Palestinian demonstrators fed up with high prices and unpaid salaries shuttered shops, halted traffic with burning tires and clashed with riot police in demonstrations across the West Bank on Monday? the largest show of popular discontent with the Palestinian Authority in its 18-year existence.

The violence showed that the unrest, initially supported by Palestinian leaders in hopes of drawing international attention to the struggling economy, risks backfiring and morphing into a broader movement against the government.

"Nobody is able to live, except the big officials," said Sami Saleh, a 57-year-old taxi driver who supports his family of eight on a $700 monthly salary. "We have to pressure this government to change," he said.

As he spoke, youths hollered and cheered as they set tires alight behind him, sending plumes of black smoke into the air and blocking the main road from the West Bank city of Ramallah to the nearby city of Jerusalem. Nearby, striking taxi and bus drivers scribbled the word "taxi" on a donkey in yellow paint.

The most heated clashes occurred in Hebron, where hundreds of protesters smashed the windows of a municipality building with rocks. The crowd tried to storm the building but was thwarted by riot police who fired tear gas and beat back some of the demonstrators. Later, protesters tried to attack the police station, prompting a pitched rock-hurling battle between police and demonstrators.

There were no injuries. But the violence was significant because it targeted a symbol of Palestinian self-rule. Usually, Palestinians reserve their anger for Israel, which captured the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast war and wields overall control of the area.

Most of the rage has been directed toward Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, a U.S.-educated economist who oversees the government's finances. But at least part of the anger appeared engineered by Fayyad's powerful rivals in the Fatah movement led by President Abbas.

The unrest was reminiscent of the mass demonstrations of the Arab Spring that topped aging dictatorships in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen, and sparked civil war in Syria. While there is no sign that the protests are approaching that level, they nonetheless are the largest show of popular discontent with the governing Palestinian Authority in its 18-year history.

In Hebron, about 50 men hurled shoes at a large poster of Fayyad that had the words "Depart, Fayyad" scrawled underneath. Hurling shoes is a deeply insulting move in the Arab world. They then tore down the poster, stepped on it and burned it.

Fayyad says the troubles are beyond his control. The Palestinian Authority, which governs parts of the West Bank, is grappling with a sharp budgetary shortfall because the U.S. and Arab countries that sustain it haven't delivered promised aid money.

Finance Ministry officials say donors owe $1.2 billion in pledged money, more than a quarter of the government's annual budget. The authority, by far the largest employer in the West Bank, hasn't been able to pay full salaries in months.

"There are no magic solutions," said Nour Oudeh, a spokeswoman for Fayyad.

The troubles have been compounded by the global phenomenon of rising fuel and food prices.

"It's just not possible anymore with the rising prices. Salaries don't cover a month," said Osama al-Azzeh, a 21-year-old university student in Bethlehem. He said his older brother supports him, their stepmother and four young sisters on $540 a month working as an electrical salesman.

Fayyad, a political independent, is respected internationally for cleaning up the corrupt practices of previous Palestinian governments and for putting international financial standards in place in the West Bank.

But his efforts over the years have antagonized many in President Mahmoud Abbas' dominant Fatah movement. Fatah activists were the driving force behind the early protests last week, in part to embarrass Fayyad, Abbas' most formidable rival.

Abbas himself has expressed sympathy with the protesters, but made clear that he would not tolerate violence. Monday's events suggested that the frustration may run deeper than thought.

The Palestinian Authority was formed in 1994 under what was supposed to be an interim arrangement with Israel while a final peace accord was negotiated. But negotiations have repeatedly faltered, and two decades later, peace remains elusive.

The demonstrations have underscored the limits of Palestinian self-rule.

The Palestinian Authority governs the daily affairs of most Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. But some 60 percent of the West Bank remains under full Israeli control. Even those areas governed by the Palestinians are subject to Israeli security control.

Donor dollars are crucial because Palestinians have an economy hampered by Israel's control over the West Bank's borders as well as limited movement inside the territory. Security checks over exports and imports hamper the ability of Palestinian manufacturers to buy cheaper products elsewhere and raise the price of exports.

An easing of some restrictions in recent years pushed economic growth toward double digit figures. But international economists say the upturn cannot be sustained unless Israel releases the Palestinian economy from its shackles.

Israel hasn't done so, citing security concerns, and the growth has been tapering off.

Israeli officials have kept their distance from the latest Palestinian unrest. The Israeli military said the demonstrations were "internal Palestinian events," but said it was prepared "for any eventuality."

Palestinian protesters have demanded government subsidies for basic goods like food and fuel, a minimum wage, the repeal of a recent round of tax hikes and the cancellation of a Palestinian trade agreement with Israel.

But economist Samir Abdullah, a former Cabinet minister, said it would be difficult to cancel the economic agreement because the Palestinians badly need tax revenues from the agreement.

Compounding the government's problems, the Islamic group Hamas has ruled the Gaza Strip since ousting Abbas' forces there in 2007. The Palestinians hope to establish a state in both territories but have repeatedly failed to reconcile.

While Hamas officials gloated over Fayyad's misery, they recently announced their own package of reforms to help unemployed Gazans find work. Last week in Gaza, a young man committed suicide by setting himself on fire, despairing over his unemployment and poverty.

"Life for people is extremely difficult," said Samia al-Botmeh, a development specialist at the Birzeit University in the West Bank. "I think people could have tolerated that if there was a political opening, if there was some hope. The fact that the two are totally hopeless makes it very frustrating for people."

Swallowed magnets in children need quick evaluation and treatment

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) ? Children who swallow powerful neodymium magnets are at risk of serious complications, requiring emergency evaluation and possible treatment. That's the message of a new clinical algorithm published in the September issue of The Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, official journal of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN). The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.

Developed by an NASPGHAN expert panel, the algorithm provides doctors with a recommended, step-by-step approach to managing children who have swallowed these powerful magnets. "The algorithm is a concise guide to the evaluation and treatment of magnet ingestions meant to reduce the gastrointestinal complications in children," commented lead author Dr R. Adam Noel of Children's Hospital of New Orleans.

Informal Survey Identified More Than 80 Cases

"Neodymium or rare earth magnets are not our grandfather's magnets," Dr Noel and coauthors write. "Composed of iron, boron & neodymium, they are at least five to ten times more powerful than traditional magnets." Used in many industrial products, the powerful magnets are also marketed as "desk toys" or "stress relievers" for adults.

Because of their "formidable" attractive force, neodymium magnets pose a serious health hazard if swallowed. That's because ingested magnets can "find each other" even if they are in different areas of the digestive system. "The magnets can therefore cause two pieces of bowel to stick together with great strength and do not separate," the authors explain. This can result in gastrointestinal perforation or obstruction, sometimes requiring surgery.

An informal survey of NASPGHAN members highlighted the frequency and seriousness of the problem. Pediatric gastroenterology specialists responding to the survey reported more than 80 children with magnet ingestion. Most patients required endoscopy to remove the magnets or surgery to repair damage to the bowels. Twenty-six children had bowel perforation; three needed major surgery to remove a section of damaged intestine.

Emphasis on Rapid Medical Evaluation of Swallowed Magnets

In response, a NASPGHAN task force was formed to develop a new algorithm for evaluation and management of ingested neodymium magnets. X-rays are needed to confirm that the child has swallowed magnets and to show their location. Because the magnets are usually small, there may be no or only mild symptoms.

A critical step is determining how many magnets the child has swallowed. A single magnet will likely pass through without causing any harm. However, if two or more magnets have been swallowed (or a magnet with another piece of metal), attraction between them may result in serious complications. Because magnets may overlap, multiple x-rays from different angles are needed.

Rapid evaluation is critical, as complications appear more common if the child is not seen within twelve hours. The algorithm recommends removal of the magnets using an endoscope, if possible -- although this can be difficult because the magnets can get stuck on the sides of the removal instrument. Surgery may be needed if medical care is delayed, if the magnets pass out of the stomach, or if complications occur.

While the new article was being prepared for publication, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) took action to ban the sale of neodymium magnets as toys. But Dr Noel notes that the CPSC action affects only the small magnets that make up adult magnet toys and that the biggest company selling the toys is resisting. In addition, the ban won't apply to magnets used in other products, such as children's toys and tools.

"Therefore there will be a significant exposure to the extremely small powerful magnet for the foreseeable future," commented Dr Noel. "I hope for our children's sake that the CPSC action will stick. But even so, the magnets that are already in our environment are a clear and present danger."

Coauthor Dr Mark Gilger of Texas Children's Hospital agrees, suggesting that cases of magnet ingestion in children may even increase over the short term. He added, "If one used a risk/benefit analysis on neodymium magnet desk toys, it's quite simple: the risk of injury to children is high and the population benefit is little or none. Do we need this toy, really?"

Wall Street slips on economic worries, ECB eyed

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Tuesday, led by weakness in shares most sensitive to the health of the economy after a report showed the country's manufacturing sector shrank at its sharpest clip in more than three years last month.

Declines on Wall Street followed a bounce on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke kept alive hopes for further monetary easing, although he stopped short of signaling any imminent action to prop up the economy.

The Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity fell to 49.6 in August from 49.8 in July. The index also shrank in June. A reading below 50.0 indicates contraction. The data followed similar disappointing readings on manufacturing elsewhere in the world.

"What people saw with today's U.S. ISM and the manufacturing data in Asia and Europe yesterday is that the global economy is still slowing down. In particular, cyclical stocks are pretty weak today," said Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak & Co in New York.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 90.82 points, or 0.69 percent, to 13,000.02. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> fell 7.42 points, or 0.53 percent, to 1,399.16. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> shed 21.31 points, or 0.69 percent, to 3,045.66.

The Morgan Stanley cyclical index <.cyc> fell 1.4 percent. The S&P materials sector index <.gspm> lost 1.5 percent.

Shares of Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. fell 4.2 percent to $34.33. Allegeny Technologies Inc. slipped 3.1 percent to 28.71.

Investors are now awaiting comments from European Central Bank President Mario Draghi after the bank's meeting on Thursday. Speculation the ECB will unveil plans to lower borrowing costs for Spain and Italy mounted after Draghi said central bank purchases of sovereign bonds of up to three years maturity did not constitute state aid.

The all-important payrolls report due Friday will also be closely watched. The employment report will be the final major economic report before the Federal Open Market Committee meets on September 12-13.

"What we are seeing is a little bit of profit-taking after three consecutive months of gains in light of the possibility of some more disappointment this week," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co. Lake Oswego, Oregon.

Separate data also showed U.S. construction spending in July fell by the most in a year as both the private and public sectors cut back on investment, according to a report that could dampen hopes of a pick-up in economic activity in the third quarter.

We're all fascinated with ghosts. There are so many television programs that center around ghost hunting such as Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, Most Haunted and Ghost Lab.

Shows about paranormal research, haunted houses and ghosts caught on tape are becoming more and more popular. True ghost stories have gained the attention of millions of viewers.

Ghosts and hauntings have become a focus of entertainment, mainly because we want to know more about what ghosts are and why they're here.

There is a difference between ghosts and spirits, and is explained as follows:

Spirits

Spirits are the energies of deceased loved ones and friends who have died and gone into the Light. However, they do have the ability to visit us, and they do very often. They can come and go as they please between our world and the Other Side.

Spirits are not bound by space and time like humans are. They are pure energy and move about effortlessly. Spirits love to let us know they're with us and that they aren't far away at all.

Ghosts

Ghosts are the energies of people who, for their own reasons, are earthbound. Basically, ghosts are:

1. People who have died suddenly and don't know they're dead
2. People who are attached to loved ones or places and don't want to leave them

Hauntings occur when a ghost feels threatened by our presence, or feels we're invading the space they once occupied, or is angry because their lives ended too soon.

If you feel your home is haunted by a ghost, you can try to get rid of them by firmly asking them to leave, and explain that they're no longer alive and must go to the light. You can also ask spirit to escort them to the light.

While ghosts may haunt houses and will do so for many years, spirit will come to get them eventually. Until then, we need to have more compassion and understanding for them, and look at their existence from their point of view.

...I am a Mum of two?gorgeous girls and I am very lucky to say that although I work beyond full time hours, I work from home. A homemaking homemaker. My family are very patient. Why? Because I have taken up half of the house with my business, my hoardings, my treasures, my makings, my stationery. The once living room to our house is now my studio, a full functioning studio. A room I affectionately call The Linen Garden....

I feel unsettled when my surroundings stay the same for too long (apparently it is because I am Aries, although I am not too sure this is the reason)....I think my husband would say it is one of my annoying cosmetics of 'being me'....

I like change, I hate routine (but I do need to work on this as working from home with a young family does require a pinch of organisation), so I am constantly moving furniture, changing the purpose of rooms around, re-painting the colours of the walls

The ever changing appearance of my studio is partly what keeps me inspired.? I love how I look back at photos and see how the studio changes in colour, mood, style, tidyness.

Working on your own can be quite challenging at times, you have to be extremely disciplined......working from home you have the domestic goddess, that you think you should be, whispering in your ear about "the pile of ironing, the breakfast pots, shall we make soup and bread for tea, shall we read the Sunday supplements and find some new recipes, you really should hoover the stairs"....?I try not to listen to her, in fact, looking at my house at the moment I definately haven't been listening to her....

...so?when the tasks in hand for the day are rather repetative I indulge in the advantages of working from home.??These at the moment are ?6Music, Iplayer and the Desert Island Discs Archive (fabulous by the way)?to keep me going at these times.... So tell me, what do you use?to help nudge the working day along... please share and break my cycle, you know I don't like routine.......

One Direction reaches agreement over name

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? British boy band One Direction and a U.S. musical group of the same name have reached an agreement that allows the U.K. group to continue use of the name.

The two groups issued a news release from London saying the California-based group will change its name to Uncharted Shores.

The release says both parties are pleased with the resolution.

The quintet of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson came together in 2010 after trying out individually for the British version of "The X Factor." They've since become a sensation and their album "Up All Night" was the first by a U.K act to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 all-genre albums chart.
